    <div class="html-content"><p>What do Netflix, Scandal, Twitter and Street Fighter all have in common? They’re all part of the mass-mediated universe of celebrities, film, television, and video games that make up American popular culture. In <strong>AMST 325: Studies in Popular Culture</strong>, students explore this mass-mediated universe in to examine the many ways that it shapes how Americans see their world and themselves.</p><p>This course focuses on the interplay of the popular arts and American society, using American studies interdisciplinary methodologies. Emphasis will be placed on the modern era from the 1890's to the present, with greatest weight placed upon mass and popular culture of the last quarter of this century.</p><p>AMST 325 is offered during the 2016 Winter Session at the UMBC-Shady Grove (USG) campus in Rockville, Maryland, and fulfills a general education requirement (GEP). USG courses are open to all UMBC students during winter session.</p><p>One lower-level social sciences or humanities course focused on American society or culture is recommended preparation for this course.</p><p><a href="https://highpoint-prd.ps.umbc.edu/app/catalog/classsection/UMBC1/2160/1164" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Register Now</a></p></div>

    <div class="html-content"><div><div>Have you ever looked at a Salvador Dali painting and wondered how he came up with such extreme ideas? Or marveled at cubism, one of Pablo Picasso's most influential visual art styles? If you can answer YES to these questions then this course is definitely for you! During ART 323, students will survey the development of modernism in the visual arts, beginning with European movements in the late nineteenth century, and continuing to the artistic movements of the first half of the twentieth century. </div><div><br></div><div>All historical developments regarding art will be considered with a specific focus in key developments in American modernism, such as the Harlem renaissance, the Armory show, and abstract expressionism. </div><div><br></div><div>This course is offered as ART 323, and fulfills a general education requirement (GEP) for Arts and Humanities. You must have completed ART 216 or ART 221 with a grade C or better.</div><div><br></div><div><em>UMBC winter session offers more than 100 courses during winter session.     <div class="html-content"><div><div>What do ballet, the bachata, and ballroom dancing all have in common? Put your best foot forward this winter and earn Culture GEP credit with Dance Appreciation (DANC 101). Explore and compare the social and cultural genres of dance in present and past societies across the globe through their movements, practices, and purposes. </div><div><br></div><div>Each student will have the opportunity to learn about the roles of choreographers, dancers, musicians, and audiences and how they differ across cultures in this hands-on course. This course is offered as DANC 101, and fulfills a general education requirement (GEP) in Culture and in the Arts and Humanities.</div><div><br></div><div><em>UMBC winter session offers more than 100 courses during winter session. Many of these, like DANC 101, are offered through the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences.</em></div></div></div>
