Step on up and join the team! You don’t want to miss this special topics class provided by the Media and Communications department on Sports Production! Students will learn the basics of broadcasting and marketing collegiate sports through participation in the production and promotion of UMBC basketball games.
Within three weeks students will have the opportunity to assist in the production and direction of game broadcasts, learn about camera operations, work in-game marketing entertainment, observe the facilitation of sponsorships, and contribute to the creation of post game highlight packages, among other tasks. Get your head in the game and learn the ropes on broadcasting, marketing, and visual production behind collegiate sports.
A study of key concepts, skills, or themes in the areas of media and communication studies and recommended for preparation of the course MCS 370-01.

2 New Scholarships for 2016 Asia Study Abroad
The Asia Institute has officially launched two new scholarships offered in collaboration with the Academy of International Business Southeast (AIB-SE) and the Pennsylvania Council for International Education (PaCIE). Both jointly developed scholarships will award $1000 to support learning experiences for students traveling to Asia in 2016. For more details, please see below:

STA Travel Start the Adventure Scholarship: Deadline 11/6/15
A scholarship value of $2,500!
The Start the Adventure Scholarship was born out of a desire by STA Travel to recognize both student and institution. Thus, $2500 is awarded to a deserving student and a matching donation of $2500 is made to the student's home university or college to award to an additional student of their choice for study abroad, thereby making each scholarship twice as powerful.
The STA Travel Start the Adventure timeline for students who will begin their study abroad programs between January and June 2016 is as follows:
Application Opens: Monday, October 12, 2015 (before 5 PM MDT)
Application Deadline: Friday, November 6, 2015, 5 PM MDT
Award Announced: Wednesday, December 30, 2015 (before 5 PM MDT, subject to change)
Applications for the award will take place through the regular FGS application channel at the link below:

The top three applicants will be interviewed by STA Travel staff. Applicants should be:
1. Willing to be an advocate for meaningful travel, international education, and equal access to these opportunities for fellow students

3. Able to answer the question: “Why is it important for students to participate in international education programs?"
Final selection of the scholarship recipient will be made by STA Travel.

Japanese Bridging Scholarship
Up to $2,500 or $4,000 depending on your length of study!
The Bridging Scholarship program will award 25 scholarships to American students participating in study-abroad programs in Japan that begin in Spring 2016. Undergraduate students majoring in any field of study and attending any recognized exchange or independent program in Japan are eligible to apply for these scholarships.
Recipients of Bridging Scholarships will receive stipends of $2,500 or $4,000, depending on the length of their study program in Japan. The scholarships are funded by donations from U.S. corporations and foundations to the US-Japan Bridging Foundation. Since 1999, the Bridging Scholarship program has awarded more than 1,550 scholarships to students studying abroad in Japan. Most recently, 75 students from colleges and universities in 34 states received scholarships for study in Japan in the Fall 2015 semester.
Spring 2016 study programs are those beginning between January and April 2016 and continuing for at least three months, for a semester or an academic year. Bridging Scholarships are not awarded for summer-only study programs.
The deadline for applications for Spring 2016 scholarships is October 8, 2015. Applicants will be notified of the results by November 30. Selection will be based on academic potential and financial need. The scholarships are administered by the American Association of Teachers of Japanese.

Study Abroad Walk-in Hours
Just a gentle reminder to all UMBC students about education abroad advising. The staff of the Study Abroad Office is happy to help students plan for the academic program overseas that best meets their academic needs and geographic interests. We do so during our regularly scheduled walk-in advising hours. We can see students during these hours only.
We also want to gently remind you that all students must attend a session of Study Abroad 101 prior to coming to walk-in hours. These sessions are held twice a week, every week, throughout the semester. They are held on Mondays at noon, Thursdays at 3:00 pm in 218 Administration.
If you have just a quick question, it is far better to e-mail the Study Abroad Office at <sao [at] umbc [dot] edu>. We strive to answer all messages within 24 hours.
Study Abroad 101 sessions are held twice a week, every week, throughout the semester in 218 Administration at the following times:
Mondays at 12:00 pm
Thursdays at 3:00 pm
We look forward to helping you start the experience of a lifetime through the Study Abroad Office.
