Campus Resources: Chemistry Tutorial Center Summer 2015 Hours

The Chemistry Department offers free tutoring for students enrolled in Organic Chemistry, CHEM 351 and CHEM 352.

These tutoring sessions provide guidance in working through additional practice problems and also help elaborate and/or clarify concepts from class.

Information about when and where these groups will meet will be sent to enrolled students via their UMBC e-mail the week before the session begins and will be re-iterated by the course instructors during the first week of the session.

Race & Ethnic Relations provides a platform for open and supported discussion about what the country, and often the world, is talking about now. The course focuses on current events and relevant issues, and offers a perspective that will broaden and enlighten your thinking.

Topics include major court cases (Trayvon Martin, Eric Gardener) as well as current issues, including Rachel Dolezal, (former NAACP Chapter President in Spokane, WA), the pool party incident in McKinney, TX, and the events following the death of Freddie Gray in Baltimore.

SOCY 321, a Session II six week course begins on July 7, and fulfills a general education requirement (GEP) in the Social Sciences.

Students can come for a session at any stage of the writing process. The Writing Center is run through the Learning Resources Center.

The Writing Center provides tutoring in writing to all UMBC students. You can bring in a writing assignment for any UMBC course as well as seek help with resumes, application essays (or personal statements) and letters, and personal writing.

The Writing Center offers both APPOINTMENT TUTORING AND WALK-IN TUTORING! To make an appointment, go to http://umbc.mywconline.com. Create an account using your UMBC email, and choose from a wide range of tutors and appointment times to schedule a session that fits your needs. (Note: appointments must be made at least a day in advance, but if you need a same-day appointment, you can always just walk in.)

The Writing Center's goal is to help you become an independent writer as you work with a tutor on these writing issues:

In a tutoring session, you have the opportunity to receive an objective view of your writing from a friendly and skilled writer. Another person's opinion is always helpful! As a result of your discussion with the tutor, troublesome writing can become stronger and strong writing can become even better.

A writing session usually lasts between 30-60 minutes, so plan to spend that amount of time. To help you experience a productive session, please do the following:

1) bring the assignment sheet for the paper,
2) bring two copies of a typed draft,
3) allow time to revise your paper after the session, and
4) be open to a session that will help you become a strong and independent writer.

Tutors do NOT just proofread or correct papers.

This summer, examine the role that gender plays in the U.S. legal system and how the legal rights of women are addressed, from the effects of gender-based stereotypes, to the status of women in the legal profession. Explore current issues such as domestic violence, LGBT rights, transgender rights, race, masculinity, and the police state, including the Freddie Gray case in Baltimore.

You’ll understand how race, class, nationality, and other aspects of identity affect a woman’s ability to access the rights articulated in law, and how these factors affect a woman’s access to justice.

How do you use Facebook? Some people use it to discuss politics, sports, or post their favorite pet videos. In MCS 101, you’ll use Facebook to develop your own media literacy skills. Explore net neutrality, bias in the news industry, and viral media. Analyze the value of Wikipedia, as well as the economic, social, legal, and ethical aspects of digital media. Discuss the impact of traditional media, including print, radio, film, and TV.

You’ll also be introduced to basic media production, with hands-on opportunities to apply those skills. Take Media Literacy this summer, and you’ll better understand the history and rhetorical power of media in our world. MCS 101 fulfills a GEP Arts & Humanities requirement.

Let’s talk about sex! GWST/AMST 210: Introduction to Critical Sexuality Studies is an interdisciplinary look at sexuality–in history, media, politics, and personal life. Explore the wide world of sexuality, including the origins of heterosexuality as an identity, the global history of lesbianism, the feminist porn wars, the criminalization of LGBT people in the U.S., whether or not you can tell a gay person “just by looking,” the role of the media in forming transgender identity, asexuality, and other relevant topics. It will help you learn how to write creatively, debate tough issues, and think critically.

This hybrid course blends online and in-person learning, and meets the GEP Culture and Social Sciences requirements.

An interdisciplinary approach to complex issues facing us today. The critical challenges of our time involve a tangle of disciplines: from pollution to crime, cancer to climate change. Tackling those problems requires knowing how to effectively integrate different areas of knowledge. “Ways of Knowing” provides interesting, fun and wide-ranging experiences in constructing big-picture analysis of the important issues facing us today. Using real-world examples, you’ll practice creative thinking and problem solving by learning how to integrate complex information across multiple disciplines. It helps students transform the way they think, learn and write. Professor and philosopher Jim Thomas, who was previously featured in the Baltimore Sun as “one of the most popular college instructors in the nation” teaches the summer course.
