Food drive/meal bags available to the UMBC community!

Retriever Essentials, UMBC's food pantry, is excited to share that we are offering FREE Thanksgiving Meal Bags to community members in need. If you or your family are in need of Thanksgiving dinner items, please fill out this form by Monday, November 16th. The bags will include some easy-to-prepare, non-perishable, Thanksgiving meal items. The bags will be available for pickup at the 24-hour Campus Police Station between November 23rd and November 25th. *Please email retrieveressentials@umbc.edu if you have any questions or concerns, or if you cannot pick up your Thanksgiving Bag for any reason. We may be able to coordinate home delivery on a case-by-case basis*
The Home for the Holidays Food Drive will be running from Monday, November 9th to Friday, November 20th. If you are interested in supporting our community and would like to donate, we are accepting the following items:

We kindly ask that you donate only items from this list, as these are our highest priority needs.
We are also accepting $25-50 gift cards to support families' needs for perishable items (pies, butter, turkeys, eggs, vegetables, etc.) that unfortunately we cannot provide through the pantry.

UMBC featured in Princeton's Review Guide to Green Colleges
UMBC
is one of the nation's most
environmentally responsible colleges, according to The Princeton Review®.
The
education services company features UMBC in The Princeton Review Guide to
Green Colleges: 2021 Edition. Released on October 20, 2020, and accessible for
free at www.princetonreview.com/green-guide, the guide profiles 416
colleges.
The
Princeton Review chose the schools based on a survey of administrators at 695 colleges
in 2019-20 about their institutions’ commitments to the environment and
sustainability. The company's editors analyzed more than 25 survey data points
in the process of choosing schools for the guide.
The Princeton Review has seen a high level of
interest among college applicants and their parents in colleges with green
practices, programs, and offerings. Sixty-six percent of the 12,845 respondents
(college-bound teens and parents) to The Princeton Review's 2020 College Hopes & Worries Survey said that having
information about a college's commitment to the environment would affect their
(or their child's) decision to apply to or attend a school. A report on the survey

The
school profiles in The Princeton Review
Guide to Green Colleges include "Green Facts" sections detailing
such matters as the availability of transportation alternatives on campus and
the percentage of the college food budget spent on local/organic food. The
profiles also provide information about the schools' admission requirements,
cost, financial aid, and student body demographics.
The
Princeton Review has published its annual Guide
to Green Colleges since 2010. The company is also known for its dozens of
categories of annual college rankings, its books, including The Best 386 Colleges and The Best Value Colleges, and its many
other education services.
How Schools Were Chosen for the Guide
The Princeton Review chose the 416 colleges
based on its survey of administrators at 695 colleges in 2019–20 concerning
their institutions' sustainability-related policies, practices, and programs.
Survey topics ranged from academic offerings and campus initiatives to career
preparation for "green" jobs.
More than 25 survey data points were analyzed
by The Princeton Review editors to tally Green
Rating
scores for the schools on a scale of 60 to 99. Colleges that earned a Green
Rating of 80 or higher made it into the guide. Of the 416 schools in the 2021
edition, 393 are in the U.S., 22 are in Canada, and one is in Greece. The 416
schools are listed alphabetically in the guide and not ranked overall from 1 to
416. Colleges that earned a Green Rating of 99 made it onto The Princeton
Review's earlier (August 2020) reported Green
Honor Roll,
as well as this guide. The Green Rating scores appear in the profiles of the
schools in the guide on The Princeton Review website and in profiles of the
schools in the 2021 editions of The Princeton Review books, The
Best 386 Colleges
(published August 2020) and The
Complete Book of Colleges (published July 2020).

The Global Conference on Sustainability in Higher Education will deliver the same inspiring content, engaging networking opportunities, and thought-provoking keynote speakers and presenters we celebrate each year in person – now virtually produced with the opportunity for an even larger global audience of innovative professionals committed to a more sustainable future.
Ryan Kmetz (Asst. Director of Sustainability) and Kayla Hickman (Sustainability Coordinator) are both AASHE conference presenting alums. This year they will co-present a simulive educational session virtually on Thursday 10/22 from 2.00 to 3.00 PM.
Description
Geographic Information Systems (GIS) is a tool traditionally associated with the management and display of geospatial data. The tool is very prevalent, in both the academic and professional realm, with applications in many disciplines including architecture, engineering, environmental management, and planning. Many organizations already recognize GIS as an invaluable asset that can lead to superior data management and improved communication of geospatial information. However, GIS also lends itself to an interactive platform for effectively engaging stakeholders to share your organization's own sustainability story.
Many sustainability professionals often address questions from stakeholders about what makes the campus sustainable or what makes a certain feature green. GIS allows us to create an interactive and unique sustainability experience to share with stakeholders. Through the creation of web-based, GIS story maps, we can curate custom content to engage and educate our campus about sustainability.
We encourage participants of all GIS skill levels to attend – no prior GIS knowledge is necessary. This session will provide attendees with an overview of how web-based GIS works, best practices, live examples of sustainability GIS applications, and an introduction to getting started with web-based GIS. Attendees are encouraged to bring an internet-capable device, but it is not required. At the conclusion of the session, participants will have garnered the basic skills and knowledge to set up and deploy a sustainability GIS story map at their home institution.

Hosted by the JHU Sustainability Leadership Council, this event seeks to bring together practitioner and community voices from the Baltimore City to discuss the intersection of social justice and climate/environmental concerns.
In the past several months, the topic of systematic racism has, once again, been brought to the forefront of national discourse. In light of recent, publicized instances of police brutality as well as the countless health inequities highlighted by the global pandemic, it is evident that we are in the midst of a tremendous opportunity for impactful dialogue and change.
On Tuesday September 29th, from 10:30 AM – 12:00 PM, the SLC will be hosting its fall event, a virtual Environmental Justice Panel Discussion. Moderated by Dr. Genee Smith of the School of Public Health, this event will highlight four panelists active in Baltimore City environmental justice efforts.
