For those who are joining us at in-person dance auditions, that choreography is attached to this post! In-person dance auditions will be on Saturday, February 10th from 10 - 11:30 AM in Fine Arts 318. Be sure to sign up for a time slot at the end of the audition form! You will be auditioning in groups of 10, in two lines of 5. One group will start in the front and then you will switch, so everyone will audition twice.

Reminder: those doing dance auditions virtually have different choreography to learn. You can find tutorials on that at the end of the audition form! Your form must be submitted before 3 PM today!

ANYONE who is auditioning needs to fill out the audition form before 3 PM today! See you all there! Or just around campus whenever!

LEGALLY BLONDE AUDITIONS:

Auditions for the spring musical are this weekend! Continue reading to find out how to audition!

VIRTUAL AUDITIONS

If you plan to audition virtually, you are required to send in two videos, a 60-second video of you singing your audition song and a video of yourself dancing with the provided choreography located in the Google form linked below. This choreography is completely different from the choreography learned for in-person auditions. Linked in the form, there is a Google classroom you would need to join to have access to a harmony line provided by our vocal director Sophie. We ask that you learn your vocal part, listen to the audio associated with the part (soprano, alto, tenor, etc), and record yourself singing to send in with your audition. Virtual auditions must be sent in by Friday, February 9th at 3pm.


IN-PERSON AUDITIONS


In-person auditions will take place on two days, February 9th and February 10th. 


At the GBM on the 9th, Morgan, the choreographer for Legally Blonde, will be teaching the in-person audition choreography. For those who cannot make it to the GBM that day, there will be a video posted on our myUMBC page for those to learn. February 9th GBM will be in the RAC room 130 from 12pm to 12:50pm.

Starting at 3pm on the 9th, vocal auditions will begin in room FA 318. Prepare a 30-60 song that you will sing for our creative team. You are also required to learn your vocal part (soprano, alto, tenor, etc) and have it ready for your in person vocal audition. You will then be brought in with your audition group and will be asked to sing the line that was provided in the Google classroom in the audition form. Vocal auditions will be held from 3pm to 6pm. Sign up for a slot using the Signup Genius link in the audition form.

On February 10th from 10am to 11:30am, we will be holding dance auditions. This will give applicants time to practice the choreography learned the day prior at the GBM or through the video posted on our myUMBC page.The video that is provided in the application form is NOT the choreography that you will perform for the creative team. Sing up for a slot using the signup genius link in the audition form.

There will be callbacks on February 10th starting at 3pm and will go until 8pm. If you cannot make it in person, you can always submit a video of your callback! Just make sure to contact us and let us know you will be sending in your callback by 3pm on Saturday.

Hope you're well!

My name is Julia Arbutus, and I'm directing A Man of No Importance at the Greenbelt Arts Center this spring.

I am reaching out because we are in search of certain production team members and wanted to see if any of the students involved with MTC would be interested in working on this project with us. I'm a UMBC alum myself (class of 2020 and former treasurer of MTC), and so far, most of our production team is made up of UMBC alums! So you'll be working with a group of great people :)

We are looking for: Stage Manager, Asst. Stage Manager, Set Designer, Lighting Designer and Orchestra (Bass, Cello, Guitar, Synthesizer, Piano, Reed and Violin).

Generally, we will be running rehearsals Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday. No one but a stage manager would be required to be at all or most rehearsals. Although it would be ideal for a stage manager to be available for all rehearsals, we can be a little flexible with absences, so we encourage anyone interested to reach out with their availability. Additionally, auditions take place Feb. 5-7 in the evenings and we would love it if our future stage manager could attend all three nights—although again, this is not mandatory.

All positions for this production are unfortunately unpaid; however, we are certain this show will be a fun and fulfilling production for anyone who loves community theater. We wanted to do this production because we are passionate about bringing this underperformed, queer show to new audiences, so if you are interested in rare theatre, queer stories or a good time, this would be a perfect opportunity to hone your skills with a group of cool people!

Some info about the show: A Man of No Importance is about Alfie Byrne, a bus conductor in 1964 Dublin whose heart holds secrets that he can’t share with anyone but his imagined confidante, Oscar Wilde. When he attempts to put on an amateur production of Wilde’s Salome in the local church hall, he confronts the forces of bigotry and shame over a love “that dare not speak its name.” But the redemptive power of theatre changes his life and brings his friends back to his side.

SECRETARY UPDATE

Due to unforeseen circumstances, our current secretary, M Kidwell, will be taking a gap semester. Despite this, they are still able to fulfill their duties as a board member. As a board, we want to gauge the opinions of the club on what to do moving forward. 

This is the exact statement in the bylaws regarding this situation: 

"If a board member will be absent in their spring semester (graduation, study abroad, leaving the university, etc), an election should be held about halfway through the semester to allow time for the newly elected to shadow the previous board member" 

M is not leaving the university and is still an undergraduate student. Since this bylaw is unclear about what to do in this situation, we want to gather opinions from our club members. The form is linked below.

We are now accepting applications to be a part of the creative team for our spring production of Legally Blonde. This group will include Assistant Director, Vocal Director, Stage Manager (& Assistant), Intimacy Choreographer, and Choreographer. If interested, please fill out this form before December 12 at 4 PM. Interviews will be conducted after the form has closed.

Future Club Communication

Starting this spring semester, announcements from the MTC Executive Board will be sent out using myUMBC. All the information will still be available to everyone, but this will allow other students who aren't already involved to see what is going on. You can also easily scroll back and find other information in a centralized place (rather than getting lost in our busy inboxes).

Don't fret if you're unsure how to find that. We will give a quick demonstration during our GBM this week. Here's a step by step process to make sure you will continue getting our emails:

1. Login to myUMBC
2. At the top, click "Groups."
3. Scroll down to "Browse Groups" and choose "Arts & Media."
4. Find "Musical Theater Club" among the clubs listed (I see it about halfway down the list). 
5. In the top right, click the green "Follow" button. 
6. From there, you can edit your notifications from the club.
             None = None (obvi)
             Important Only = all emails (what you already receive)
             All Updates = all emails, notifications when events are added

This email will be posted on both myUMBC and sent through the email group, so if you receive both emails already, you're good to go!

Audition for the Theater Department

The UMBC Theater Department has extended an invitation to you all to audition for their spring production of Slime. Here is the invitation sent by them. For reference, Legally Blonde is scheduled to run from April 19th - 21st, so the performances should not conflict. We are looking for dancers and actors who consider themselves strong dancers and movers to audition for the following bolded roles in Slime by Byrony Lavery:


DUMBO       she/her Dance major, ASL-trained signer.  Elective mute.

BARB           she/her animal language post-graduate[spec.northern marine mammals]

OLA              she/her animal language post-graduate[spec.northern sea birds] Activist.

COCO           she/her animal behaviour major

FREZZLE     he/him animal language post graduate[Spec,Dolphins]

EV                 he/him Business & IT studies

GOD              he/him Dance major , minoring in animal movement


MOVEMENT ENSEMBLE

There will be a movement ensemble of three. These performers will play various animals, as well as other non-human elements as needed.


About the play: 

Welcome to the Third Annual Slime Crisis Conference! Seven grad students, all fluent in animal languages, linguistics, and culture, join delegates of almost every species to save life on earth from a toxic slime. As they debate and translate for dolphins, seabirds, and polar bears, they ask, "Who is coming to save us?" The answer might surprise you…

About the movement: 

Slime will use a combination of contemporary, modern, and inventive movement. There will be pieces that will utilize traditional contemporary and modern dance and others will be pure invented  movement that is dance adjacent to portray animals, water, air, and other non-human aspects of the world. The movement ensemble will be the primary performers dancing. 


Content Disclosure: 

This play includes American Sign Language, invented language, profanity, puppetry, heavy physical and vocal demand, and movement. This play portrays apocalyptic scenarios and circumstances and talks of death. It also includes kissing and embracing. Please note the play references a stylized rape in the last few scenes. This will be cut in our production. 

Who can audition?

Any UMBC student registered for Spring 2024 is welcome to audition. 

What’s the Commitment?

After casting, actors and understudies will enroll for THTR 390 (3 credits.)  Rehearsals meet M-F, 6:30 - 10:00 pm, with extended hours during tech, dress rehearsal and performance weeks.

Rehearsal Schedule: Monday – Friday, 6:30 - 10:00 pm

First Rehearsal: Monday, January 29, 2024

Tech Week Begins: Tuesday, March 26, 2024 

Performances: April 4, 5, 11 (brush up), 12, 13 at 8:00pm

                        April 6, 14 at 2:00pm

Strike: Monday, April 15 through Tuesday, April 16


Audition Policy

Everyone who auditions, regardless of major or track, agrees to "play as cast." This means by auditioning you are committing to accepting any role or understudy assignment, and are available for the rehearsal and production schedule.

Callbacks

Thursday, December 7, from 7:00 - 10:00 pm, Dance Cube

Any materials needed for the callbacks will be made available in advance and/or at the callbacks. Callbacks will involve movement. Students should wear clothes best suitable for movement. 

Actors will be notified after the general auditions as to when they should arrive at the callback.   However, all students should be prepared to attend the callbacks in the meantime; directors are not obliged to accommodate conflicts.

Showcase Thank You!

Hey everyone! President Andrew Opincar here! I just wanted to take a second to congratulate everyone on the amazing work everybody put into Showcase! The entire Executive Board appreciates everybody's cooperation throughout the week in trying to make this process as smooth as possible. This thank you is extended to all of our cast and crew who helped with this production. We made a whopping $577 in donations over the course of the weekend! This is my first production as president and I'm incredibly proud of everyone' resilience throughout the week! I cannot wait for even more exciting shows soon.

Showcase Post-Mortem

I know previously we said that December 1st would be a Post-mortem for the Executive Board, but we decided to change the structure of that to make our last GBM more fun for everyone! Instead, we will be doing the more traditional process of a google form which we will be sending out in a couple of days!

Movie Pajama Party

We are hosting a pajama party to celebrate our upcoming production of The Last Five Years TODAY at 7 PM in Harbor MPR. Bring a blanket, comfy PJs, and snacks. There will be a raffle for some winter goodies, so make sure to attend to enter the raffle. There will be some popcorn for everyone, but bring extra snacks if you would like!
