Come out, come out, wherever you are!
October is LGBTQA+ History Month. We recognize National Coming Out Day (NCOD) on October 11th. NCOD was founded in 1988 to mark the anniversary of the 1987 March on Washington for Lesbian and Gay Rights. This day is a reminder that - in the fight for equality - one of our most basic tools is the power of coming out and sharing our stories.
For over three decades, thousands of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, asexual (LBGTQA) people and allies have celebrated NCOD through marches, informational sessions, photo-booths, speak-outs, parties and so much more. The overall goal is to show our families, friends, colleagues and the world that LGBTQA+ people are EVERYWHERE, living, loving and thriving.
Coming out - whether it is as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, or queer - STILL MATTERS. One out of every two Americans has someone close to them who identifies as gay or lesbian. For transgender people, that number is only one in ten. Visibility creates advocates and is important in the continued fight for equality and representation. Moreover, sharing your story is an essential part of finding your community and being your true authentic self. (Adapted from the Human Rights Campaign, 2018).

Let’s come together as a community to recognize the contributions immigrants make every day to UMBC and our nation.
Students, Staff, Faculty, Service Workers, Administrators: Join us on Monday, October 7 for a day-long celebration on the Commons Quad**

Regardless of where we were born, how we look or the language we speak, let’s pledge support to a strong, inclusive, safe UMBC for all.

October is National Disability Awareness Month!
Celebrate w/the Office of Accessibility & Disability Service
National Disability Awareness Month is a national campaign held in October that raises awareness about issues for people living with disabilities, and celebrates the many and varied contributions of Americans with disabilities.
NDAM's roots go back to 1945, when Congress enacted a law declaring the first week in October each year "National Employ the Physically Handicapped Week." In 1962, the word "physically" was removed to acknowledge the employment needs and contributions of individuals with various types of disabilities. In 1988, Congress expanded the week to a month and changed the name to "National Disability Awareness Month."
Americans with disabilities make up almost one-fifth of our population, but are unemployed at a rate that is twice that of people without disabilities; and for women and racial/ethnic minorities with disabilities, the rates are even higher. People with disabilities still face discrimination by employers, limited access to skills training, and, too often, unfairly low expectations.
We must continue to promote inclusion in the workplace and in our society.
We must tear down the barriers that remain -- in hearts, minds, and in policies -- to the security and prosperity that stable jobs provide and that all people deserve.
And we must actively foster a culture in which individuals are supported and accepted for who they are and in which it is okay to disclose one's disability without fear of discrimination.
The Presidential Proclamation of 2015 states: “America is at its strongest when we harness the talents and celebrate the distinct gifts of all our people. This October, as we observe the 70th anniversary of National Disability Employment Awareness Month, let us pay tribute to all who fought for better laws, demanded better treatment, and overcome ignorance and indifference to make our Nation more perfect. In their honor, and for the betterment of generations of Americans to come, let us continue the work of removing obstacles to employment so every American has the chance to develop their skills and make their unique mark on the world we share.”

October is LGBTQ+ History Month!
Celebrate with the Mosaic, Women’s Center, and LSU
LGBTQ+ History Month originated in the United States, and was first celebrated in 1994. This month-long observance of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer history celebrates role models, and the history of the LGBTQ+ rights and related civil rights movements. In the United States, it is celebrated in October to coincide with National Coming Out Day on October 11. However, countries recognize this month at different times of the year according to their specific significant events (e.g. United Kingdom recognizes this in February)
It was founded by Missouri high-school history teacher Rodney Wilson. Many gay and lesbian organizations supported the concept early on as did Governors William Weld of Massachusetts and Lowell Weicker of Connecticut, who recognized the inaugural month with official proclamations. In 1995, the National Education Association indicated support of LGBTQ+ History Month as well as other history months by resolution at its General Assembly.
So why do we have Pride Month in June and LGBTQ+ History Month in October?
Wilson chose October as the month for the celebration due to
National Coming Out Day. It was established as a widely known event, on October 11, the date of the Second National March on Washington for Lesbian and Gay Rights that took place in 1987. June is recognized as Pride Month to commemorate the
Stonewall Riots taking place on June 28-July 1.

Portland's
Milagro Theatre will showcase the life of Multnomah County Circuit Judge Xiomara Torres.
Judge Torres is a modern-day fairytale rooted in Salvadoran folklore. It is a story of triumph against the odds;
Xiomara Torres made her rise from undocumented immigrant to one of only a few Latina judges in Oregon.
Materials in BOTH English and Spanish will be provided. After the play, attendees will be able to engage in a brief facilitated dialogue with the performers. Food and beverages will be provided after the show. All undergrads, grads, staff, and faculty are encouraged to attend! This event is open to the public!

Want to get involved with Campus Life's Mosaic, Interfaith Center, and Queer Student Lounge?
Want to know what Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion topics are being talked about on campus?
We are excited to roll out our brand new Mosaic Fan Card! Students, staff, faculty, and alums are all eligible to participate!
Signing up for our Mosaic Fan Card and collecting rewards is super easy!
1) Sign up for a card by contacting a Diversity and Inclusion Staff Member and following our page on myUMBC
2) Attend at least one session of each of our series for the semester (i.e. Mundo Lingo, PAWTalks, What's The (T)ea?, How to Be a Better Ally
3) Sign in or scan your Campus Card for attendance at the event
4) Submit your evaluation by the end of the event
Once you complete the above steps, our Diversity and Inclusion staff will stamp your Fan Card for the respective event. Earn giveaways once you have acquired a stamp in each row!
Students who attend four events throughout the semester will be eligible to receive our *new* Mosaic t-shirt.
For our staff, faculty, and alums we are offering a Staff, Faculty, and Alums "discount", which only requires the attendance of two events per semester.

Retriever Courage Fall Gathering
Cross-promoting on behalf of Retriever Courage
A year ago, the UMBC community shared their experiences and concerns about the university's response to sexual violence. Retriever Courage was implemented as a response to this concern. Now, it is time to again come together as a community and talk about lessons learned, what has been done, and the next steps we can take together to make UMBC a safer and more caring environment for all.
Please consider attending the Fall Gathering on September 18, from 4 - 6 p.m. in the University Center Ballroom. During this event, the Retriever Courage Implementation Team and other campus partners will share a range of updates about the steps they are taking to improve the University’s response and ultimately prevent violence in our community. In addition, there will be a panel discussion where community members will have the chance to ask questions or provide feedback.
Release time will be granted for employees to take part in this event, and everyone is encouraged to attend.
In addition to attending the event, you can also learn more by visiting the
Retriever Courage website and viewing the dashboard. This site will be regularly updated throughout the year to share progress and timelines on implementing the recommendations made by our community and the external consultants.
During National Hispanic Heritage Month(September 15 to October 15) we recognize the contributions made and the important presence of Hispanic and Latino Americans to the United States and celebrate their heritage and culture.
Our Hispanic/Latinx have had a profound and positive influence on our country through their strong commitment to family, faith, hard work, and service. They have enhanced and shaped our national character with centuries-old traditions that reflect the multiethnic and multicultural customs of their community.
So why does Hispanic Heritage Month start in the middle of September and end in Mid-October?
Hispanic Heritage Month, whose roots go back to 1968, begins each year on September 15, the anniversary of independence of five Latin American countries: Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. Mexico, Chile and Belize also celebrate their independence days during this period and Columbus Day (Día de la Raza) is October 12.
The term Hispanic, refers to the racially and ethnically group of folks who are from hispanophone (Spanish Speaking) countries that were historically colonized by Spain. This term is inclusive to those who also from Spanish origin. The term Latino however excludes Spain, but includes non-Spanish speaking Latin American countries such as Belize, Brazil, Guyana, and Haiti. Please note that even if folks may have ethnic roots from Latin America, they may identify as either, neither or both Hispanic and/or Latino (i.e. we encourage you to check out how the term Hispanic has been reclaimed and it's impacts on the Brown Power Movement).
Today, 55 million people or 17% of the American population identify as Hispanic or Latino origin. This represents a significant increase from 2000, which registered the Hispanic population at 35.3 million or 13% of the total U.S. population.
Share in this special annual tribute by learning and celebrating the generations of Hispanic and Latino Americans who have positively influenced and enriched our nation and society.
