Faculty Screencasting: Winning before Beginning Student Class Readiness Using TechSmith Relay Over the course of the past year, approximately 40 faculty and staff members have made use of UMBC’s supported screencasting tool, TechSmith Relay, to record over 400 recordings. This application is easy to use and configure, and it allows users to create how-to videos, capture lecture presentations (e.g., as a solution for inclement weather), and adapt their pedagogy to support their learners’ needs. This article highlights two TechSmith Relay users’ experiences with this tool.

Dr. Brian Grodsky is an associate professor of Political Science, and teaches 200-400 level courses. He’s made nearly 250 recordings since adapting TechSmith Relay for tests and both in-class and online discussions. For online classes, Dr. Grodsky uses lecture recordings along with readings as the basis for tests and online discussion. Dr. Grodsky chunks his lecture recordings into 5-15 minute, digestible pieces, which is an identified best practice for screencasting in order to support learner engagement with the content. "I think the tool is generally great….I definitely recommend using this," says Dr. Grodsky, who believes this tool has opened numerous opportunities to delve more deeply into the course content during class discussions.

Dr. Stephen Mang is a Lecturer with the Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry. He uses TechSmith Relay videos to introduce students to chemicals, their reactions, and equipment prior to laboratory experiments. He also makes short (5-10 minute) introductory videos that address discrete concepts from readings for students to watch prior to class to facilitate in-class discussion. Dr. Mang says he’s found these videos "really help in terms of the number of students who come to class ready to discuss the material."

Dr. Mang’s impressions of the tool are also very positive, and he too would recommend any faculty use Relay, and particularly those who teach labs. "The videos can be an excellent supplement to that lecture, letting you change what you focus on during the in-person lecture and helping students really understand what they're going to be doing in lab that day."

Through a University System of Maryland partnership with the Online Learning Consortium (OLC), DoIT is pleased to offer an exceptional online training opportunity to UMBC full-time and part-time faculty.

The OLC workshop format utilizes proven teaching strategies and learning activities while modeling best practices for online and hybrid learning. Collaborate with peers and experiences via synchronous (live) and asynchronous environments. Normally these workshop cost about $300 each, but our partnership provides a limited number of seats at no cost to UMBC faculty.

These workshops require a time commitment of 3-7 days on average with some lasting up to 3 weeks. All workshops are delivered online with either a synchronous or asynchronous component. A  full list of workshop titles  is  available through this year.

On Thursday, March 19th starting at 2pm LDAP-master and Webadmin will be taken down for system maintenance.  During this time account creations and password changes will be unavailable.  Account authentication and logins will not be affected during this downtime.  

The maintenance window will allow staff to apply needed security and application updates.  The outage window is expected to last two hours with services being restored by 4pm on Thursday, March 19th.  

During the outage window account creations will be queued and then processed upon restoration of services.  If you have any questions or concerns, please contact our Technology Support Center at x53838.

As part of our ongoing commitment to security, the Unix Infrastructure will be conducting its quarterly patching of systems.  While many of the systems will be patched without any service disruption, there are several systems which require the downtime of key services.  The schedule below outlines which key services will be offline and for how long.

Monday March 16th:

  • RT will be down from 9am to 11am

Tuesday March 17th from 9am to 1pm

  • myUMBC lite page will be up resulting in reduced myUMBC functionality

  • The sites (wordpress) web hosting environment will be unreachable

  • Wiki will be unavailable

  • The new web hosting environment will be down (pages will be available but any database calls will not work)

  • Student mySQL databases will be offline


Tuesday March 17th from 1pm to 5pm

  • Access to Cyrus and UMBC Webmail (accounts not migrated to UMBC Gmail)

    • All mail will be queued up and delivered after the server ispatched

    • Expected to be unreachable from 1pm to 3pm

  • All HFS (user) servers will be offline

  • Userpages will be unavailable

The achievements tool allows instructors to create opportunities for students to earn recognition for their accomplishments in courses.  Instructors can designate criteria for issuing rewards to students in the form of both badges and certificates. Students can see which rewards they have earned and what is required to receive additional rewards, providing insight into learning progression toward defined competencies (help.blackboard.com).

The My Academic Progress (MAP) system served the needs of UMBC’s Advising Community for ~15 years.  In the early 1990s, DoIT along with the Registrars Office sought to better meet the needs of the Advising Community and digitized what advisers did manually.  MAP was a useful tool that helped advisers gauge student’s progress towards graduation and helped advisers focus on career and academic advising rather than thumbing through various papers.  MAP was an innovative early degree audit before there was such a thing as electronic degree audits.    

In 2010, after UMBC implemented the SA system, advisers and students began using SA’s robust rules driven degree audit and what-if scenarios.  DoIT has kept the MAP software running for historical inquiries.  With each passing year the inquiries into MAP have declined and need to keep the software available and operational has become problematic and expensive.

Faculty who plan to use clickers for instruction during the ​​Fall  2015 semester will need to have device order(s) submitted to the Bookstore no later than Friday, March 27, 2015. This deadline allows the Bookstore to shop national wholesalers early for used books and items, prepare for buyback, avoid sending back to publishers leftover stock that will be reused next semester, and notify faculty of any availability problems.


The University’s due date for textbook and course materials information is Friday, April 24, 2015. The University has instituted this deadline so that all textbook information, including clicker requirements, may be posted on the Bookstore's website, in adherence with State Law, as students prepare for their Fall 2015 schedules.
