Happy American Heart Health Month and the start of a new semester!

In February, our wellness initiative is focused on heart health and we offer a Cardio 101 class with Alea Burke in the RAC for all ages and life stages. We continue our Work-Life Wellbeing series with a custom built program on Discovering Your Work-Life Balance based on focus group feedback. We also continue our Communication series with Active Listening, a session in collaboration with Bowie State.

February Training Calendar

Attached is a PDF of our February Training Opportunities. This PDF has links to register for each of the events listed. We look forward to seeing you at many of these events to engage you in our community of learning.

A few events of particular note in our February calendar are:

We continue our series on Work-Life Wellbeing. Throughout the spring, we will have one event per month that will focus on the balance we all strive to hold between our work lives and our home lives. February will focus on that integration of the two facets of our lives with Work-Life Wellbeing: Discovering Your Work-Life Balance. This is an experiential 3-hour session that moves the participant from abstract to creating an individualized plan of action.

We have revamped our PMP Training for Supervisors and are rolling out sessions on both February 16th and March 14th with Michale S.

Also in February, we will continue our series on communication skills with Active Listening. This session is a collaboration with Mary Ogan from Bowie State and will be open to both campuses.

Coming up in March, our collaboration with the USM Learning & Talent Development Committee will bring a mini-conference on Performance Review Prep!
Extra credit & exemptions come to Ultra assessments in Feb

<Tagline>New functionality enhances Ultra courses in time for SP2023</Tagline>

In early February, instructors will have the option to help students showcase their knowledge on assessments with the new extra credit setting. With this feature, instructors can assign one or more extra credit questions to their assessments, giving students the opportunity to earn a higher score. If students chose not to answer, or get the answer wrong, they won't be penalized. Moreover, students can see how many extra credit points are available on the assessment before they begin.

Image 1: Example of extra credit (student view)

Exemptions are another exciting update to Ultra courses. Exempting students from a graded activity can be used for a variety of reasons including earlier demonstration of prior knowledge, late entry into the course, and other special circumstances. Exemptions may also support flexible and inclusive learning experiences.

Image 2: Example of exemption within an assignment

Hotspot questions were introduced to Ultra last year, providing multiple ways to create robust image-based assessment questions. With this update, instructors can use the polygon selector to draw more complex shapes. Additionally, keyboard controls help instructors create and place hotspot shapes on the image via keyboard rather than using a pointer and mouse.

Additional updates to Ultra for February include:

A new sorting option in the gradebook list view, allowing faculty to easily identify items that need grading

Options for students to sort graded items in their view of the gradebook -- for example, by due date or grades

Clear information about group membership in group sets (e.g., more than one group created at the same time) to easily identify which students are in specific groups

To better visualize students' progress with course content, instructors can change the progress tracking view to display a student's progress against all course content or only content that is visible to them. Additionally, any time a student views an Ally alternative format, the progress tracker will count that as viewed or completed.

Faculty and student satisfaction with Ultra exceeds 85%

<Tagline>Consistent praise for Ultra's clean interface, ease of use</Tagline>

In a recent survey of faculty who used Ultra during the FA2022 semester, 86.5% of faculty who responded said they would use Ultra again, citing its ease of use and consistent experience for students.

"It's easier to use in general," said one instructor, "and I find that I can prep and roll out my course faster and faster each semester as I learn more and adapt to the tools." Another instructor noted, "I'm anxious for ALL classes to be on Ultra so students can have a more consistent experience."

Likewise, 87.45% students are also satisfied with Ultra, also noting ease of use as well as its clean interface and tools to track course progress. The response is consistent with previous student surveys (SP2021, FA2019).

Well organized Ultra courses were also praised by students. "Ultra shows all relevant content right away," said one student. "It's tuned for a better learning environment." Another student agreed, "It's my favorite course to log into because I love the interface."

UMBC Archiving Unviewed Panopto Videos (01/30/23)

<Tagline>No content will be permanently deleted at this time</Tagline>

To comply with recent changes to product licensing, beginning 01/30/23, all Panopto videos that have not been viewed during the preceding 18 months will be moved to archive storage. If one wishes to retain any content on the production server, they need only access the video(s) once prior to 01/30/23. Alternatively, videos can be restored to our production server to view within 48 hours.

Since UMBC's adoption of Panopto in fall 2018, we have witnessed steady growth in its use until the onset of the pandemic, at which point usage patterns shifted significantly as all instruction moved fully online. To address increased storage demand across its client base, Panopto changed its pricing from a model based on consumption to one based on storage. Our new contract provides roughly 10x more archive storage than production storage (50,500 hours vs 6,000 hours). The latter set of hours represent traditional, on-demand media, whereas the former are held in a separate yet expediently retrievable storage.

Randomize test pages & lock discussions in Jan Ultra update

<Tagline>New option to create model essay response for graders</Tagline>

Test pagination was introduced to Ultra courses last year, creating new ways to present clusters of questions to students that focused on content or reduced cognitive load. In this month's update, test pagination can be randomized for academic integrity. The first page can be locked in place if the content contains test instructions. Additionally, if the Ultra test contains non-question elements, such as text blocks, these can also be locked in place while questions around them are randomized. When combined with question pools, this creates a truly unique testing experience for students.

Instructors can now lock discussions after the due date has passed, setting a discussion to read only. When this feature is enabled, students cannot create, reply to, or edit posts after the due date. However, students with due date accommodations may still interact with discussions until their due date expires.

Another new feature in Ultra courses is the model answer for essay questions. It is an optional feature designed to ensure fair and consistent grading. This feature must be set up when the test is created and only instructors and graders can see the model answer during the grading process. Students can see the model answer when reviewing their results if the test is configured to show correct answers. Students do not see the model answer when they take a test.

The January update also includes:

Modification to who can send Messages in a course:

Students can send messages to all instructors OR to selected course members. They can no longer send messages to the entire course.

Instructors can send messages to all course members, all instructors, all students, or selected course members.

A variety of improvements to grading workflows and displays including viewing anonymous grades and submissions, navigating multiple attempts, and displaying submissions on group assignment pages.

Third-party icons display in the course content page and for many graded items.

When accessing new submissions from the Activity Stream, instructors will be able to jump directly into to the Needs Grading filter for that particular assignment in a course. Bookmark the page to easily return for greater efficiency.
