About this Event

When schools finally fully reopened, there was a presumed return to normalcy, to things being OK. But our kids are not OK. Especially our teens. They've experienced trauma that's continuing to impact them and as their parents, you've been witnessing this first-hand. Social anxiety, depression, isolation, mood swing...or perhaps your kid seems too OK for everything they've experienced. You're not alone and there are steps you can take to spot the signs, talk to your kids and get them support.

Our guest, Jennifer L. Hartstein, PsyD, is a nationally known child, adolescent and family psychologist. A frequent guest on the national morning news shows, she's often cited in print media, and is an in-demand speaker at conferences. Parents of teens and college kids, this webinar is specifically for you. Please join us.

These Care webinars are free to attend, and a recording will be shared afterwards.

Reminder: Blackboard Courses Scheduled for Server Retirement

<Tagline>Courses before Summer 2019 to be retired beginning 7/1</Tagline>

During Summer 2022, DoIT staff and Blackboard will archive our entire instance of Blackboard, which will save individually backed-up copies of every course and organization through SP2022. Courses offered before and including AY18-19 will be retired by the end of FA2022.

Beginning July 1, courses offered from the following terms will be scheduled for retirement:

Any courses older than five years

Fall 2018

Winter 2019

Spring 2019

Summer 2019

The Blackboard system's overall performance and efficiency will improve by removing files and database transactions from the content server and database. AY19-20, AY20-21, and AY21-22 will remain on the server. Fall 2022 will begin a new academic year of data retention (AY22-23).

FAQs about Course Retirement

Is my content gone forever?

No, Blackboard archived courses captured all course data, files, student submissions, discussions, grades, etc. through SP2022. These archives will reside on a secure cloud storage location.

When will I lose access to courses that are being retired?

The archiving process will begin on July 1st. Faculty can place an RT ticket to have their course content restored through November 2022.

Can I save a copy of my own courses?

Yes -- and it is strongly encouraged! Instructors can export (course content) and/or archive (course content & student data) their courses. You should also download a copy of your gradebook. We recommend saving these files to UMBC’s cloud storage to ensure long-term access in the event you change computer systems.

Can I restore (regain access to) only course content?

Yes. Course content consists of files and course structure (menu, folders, etc.). Faculty can only import course content to an existing Blackboard course shell.

Can I restore course data?

Course data consists of student submissions, discussions, and grades. We generally prefer not to restore full courses to avoid reinstating user accounts and confusing students with old content. If you must restore archived course data, please open an RT ticket with justification included.

How long will you keep the retired courses?

We will keep the retired courses for approximately 2 years after Blackboard archives the courses. Faculty who may need content beyond 2 years should plan to save copies of their exported courses to UMBC Box or other cloud storage.

Display files in Ultra Docs, Improve Weighted Grades in June

<Tagline>Feedback matters: Continued focus on assessment & grading</Tagline>

Summer brings four enhancements to Ultra course including three focused on assessment and grading.

Enhancement to Overall Grade Weighting: Instructors can weigh individual items (e.g., tests, assignments) separately from their categories. This includes discussions, which previously remained locked into their categories.

Set Running Total: Toggle a new setting in the Overall Grade column to let students know if the final grade displayed is a running total.

Create Multiple Attempts for Group Assessments: Allow more than one attempt for group assignments. Previously, you could only set multiple attempts for individual assignments, not for groups.

Robust content creation is important for effective course design, including how that content is displayed to students. Currently, when file attachments are added to Ultra Documents and Assessments, students must download the files to view the content. With the June update, instructors can set the behavior for file attachment:

view and download: Students can view the file within Ultra AND download it to their own devices

view only: Students can ONLY view the file on screen

download only: Students can ONLY download the file

Image 1: Example of inline file rendering in Ultra document

For courses that are in progress this summer, this feature will be automatically enabled to "view/download" when it goes into production (scheduled for June 2-3). Settings chooses when uploading new content will only copy over to another course. Please review the related FAQ for additional information.

Additionally, the Ultra developers listened to your feedback about the "Choose at least one correct answer" clause when creating multiple choice questions -- this text was visible to instructors during question creation, question editing, and grading, but it was not not visible to students. They've taken that text out to avoid confusion.

Finally, as with Original courses, the maximum file upload is limited to 75 MB per individual file, which is generally sufficient for most individual PowerPoint and PDF files. Also, since media tends to be quite large and Blackboard is not a streaming service, audio and videos should always be uploaded to Panopto for encoding and distribution to students.

The next update to our test environment will take place on June 21, 2022. Faculty who are interested in test driving new features before they are released to production should open an RT ticket to request early access. Additionally, our Ultra feature tracker is updated and now includes a filter for functional category (e.g., assessment, course management, grading) so you can sort only those items you might be interested in tracking the status. Please watch the FAQs, including the What's New with Ultra page, and myUMBC for additional information about Ultra.

DoIT Pilots Poll Everywhere as BYOD Clickers

<Tagline>Use mobile devices to participate in live polls</Tagline>

10/6/22 Update:

To clarify, during the 2022-23 academic year, while DoIT pilots the Poll Everywhere institutional license, we will continue to also support Point Solutions (formerly Turning Technologies) per student subscription model sold at the UMBC Bookstore, which have also been discounted.

Beginning next Fall, DoIT will support a campus-wide pilot of Poll Everywhere, an audience response system that can be utilized in face-to-face and online courses instead of traditional, physical clickers. There will be no cost to faculty or students to use Poll Everywhere.

Instead of owning a physical clicker, students will participate in polls by using their mobile devices, often referred to as BYOD (bring your own device). Without hardware constraints of physical clickers, faculty can utilize a number of question types including open-ended questions, clickable image questions, ranking, Q&A, surveys, and competitions in addition to standard multiple choice or true/false questions. Faculty can prepare polls before classes using a web-based interface and share questions and results with other colleagues as well. Poll responses can be graded and the scores can be passed back to the Blackboard gradebook. Lastly, Poll Everywhere can be used during synchronous, online class meetings since no other hardware is needed.

Without the barrier of purchasing a clicker or a supplemental software license, DoIT hopes to promote and better support active learning strategies through the implementation of classroom response systems.

More information about the pilot, transition, and training opportunities for PollEverywhere will be announced on the Instructional Technology myUMBC group over the summer.

Coming Soon: Badging 100 and the Edu-Work Alignment

<Tagline>Webinar series highlights badging creation process at UMBC</Tagline>

This summer Instructional Technology kicks off a webinar series designed to support those who want to learn, create, and issue digital badges that validate learner accomplishments, skills, and interests across a variety of learning experiences.

What are badges, you might ask? Badges represent microcredentials much in the way that a diploma represents a degree.

Badging and microcredentialing have become increasingly popular in higher education and professional workspaces dating back to 2011. Digital badges are validated indicators of an "accomplishment, skill, quality, or interest that can be earned in many learning environments." Microcredentials can reflect a range of learning experiences, starting with single competencies and progressing to meta-badges or micromasters.

Badging and microcredentials represent a shift from static educational records and transcripts to online, digital, and portable credentials that summarize a learner's achievement, skills, or competencies (Selingo, 2017). Badges may be issued across programs and categories that include, but are not limited to, the following:

Curricular

Co-Curricular

Competency-based

Skills Preparation

Professional Development

Training

Driven by employers and industry certification programs, there are increasingly more partnerships with higher education to create shorter-form micro-credentials that can ultimately stack into a learner's lifelong learning experience (Braxton et al., 2021).

Skill acquisition for the 21st century workforce may mean that learners are interested in particular knowledge, skills, or abilities in specialized or niche topics. Badging these accomplishments is a step toward ways in which higher education can explore or offer flexible, digital "credentialized packages" of learning and mastery. As a result, there has been increasing focus on skills-based learning, experiences that produce rich and higher-order skills, and a learner's ability to demonstrate acquisition of new competencies (Baker & Jankowski, 2020).

Badging 100 is the first in a series of workshops designed to ensure individuals who wish to issue badges are comfortable with the process and understand what a badge entails. The Badging 100 workshop learning outcomes include:

Define what a badge/microcredential is and explain its utility.

Describe how badging efforts promote equity in higher education.

Recall real-world use cases of badging at UMBC and abroad.

Explain the three main components of badging at UMBC: learn, create, issue.

Identify metadata required for badges.

Badging 100 will be offered this summer. Who else in your office, department, discipline or program needs to come on this journey with you? More information about registration will be shared on the Instructional Technology myUMBC group.
