Ultra enhances usability, gradebook, test timer in November

<Tagline>Flag student retention and other grade alerts in your stream</Tagline>

Usability and a few gradebook improvements come to Ultra in November. New, larger icons with thicker line strokes and blue backgrounds improve accessibility and better support quick scanning of the Ultra course content page.

The gradebook's student list view will feature three key enhancements:

Send messages and add accommodations for a student within both the student list view and the grade details view

Configure whether students’ usernames are visible if they need to differentiate students in their Ultra courses.

Set up activity stream alerts about student inactivity and grade thresholds for themselves and their students.

If your course contains enough activity and grading data, you can also see a detailed visualization of class performance.

The gradebook also receives additional search capabilities, column sorting options, and enhanced page controls for both large and small devices. Instructors can also choose whether to show or hide the overall grade column to their students.

Additional enhancements include an update to the assessment countdown timer. Now students will know how much time they have left down to the last second when they take an Ultra assessment. The quiz timer will change from minutes to seconds when less than 1 minute remains.

GO Chat Recap: Badging & Micro-credentialing

<Tagline>Here's what you missed from our Go Online Chat!</Tagline>

Last week, we welcomed Sherri Braxton, Senior Director of Instructional Technology, as our inaugural guest on GO Chat to talk about her work on campus and beyond the loop for badging and micro-credentialing initiatives.

We discussed some recent articles that have been on our mind:

Inside Higher Ed recently published an article that Faculty confidence in online learning grows. As we prepare for Spring 2021, we hope faculty will grow their confidence in online teaching and continue to facilitate environments of active learning.

EDUCAUSE's Preparing Workers for Anything: Human + Machine made us reflect on "soft-skills" or "21st century skills" that prepare students to be lifelong learners.

The Retriever's Professors need to restructure online classes. Here’s how. We discussed how the article shed light on everyone's ability to give grace during this time.

Sherri led the conversation on how badging transforms the way learning, skills, and accomplishments are recognized and allows for the capture, promotion, and transfer of learning that occurs in diverse contexts. At UMBC, a number of badges have been awarded in partnership with campus offices. In addition to the University System of Maryland's Badging Essential Skills for Transition (BEST) program, UMBC is leading the micro-credentialing initiative to better prepare students to demonstrate mastery of competencies through the Greater Washington Partnership (GWP).

Our next GO Chat is on Friday, November 13, and will conclude our celebration of National Distance Learning Week.
New Content Editor Coming for Original Courses on November 6

<Tagline>Improved support for accessibility, file sharing, and coding</Tagline>

An updated, easier-to-use, more powerful Content Editor is coming to Original courses on November 6.

There are lots of great reasons to like the updated Content Editor. Adding content has been simplified, and it works better on both hand-held devices and larger screens. There are new tool icons and some changes to tool behavior. Expanded libraries of special characters and emoticons are searchable and organized by category. The spellchecker is smarter and editing HTML is faster with line numbering and tag colors. Review the comparison chart FAQ for more information or watch this video:

There are several improvements for accessibility and some new features, too. Here are six enhancements you can look forward to:

The Power of Plus. One easy menu for adding content from your computer, cloud storage, Content Collection, or integrated tool. The Content Editor will automatically recognize the kinds of files you add.

Better for All Devices. The editor is better suited for all devices -- small screen or big. It’s easier to author on mobile devices because pop-ups are gone.

Improved Accessibility. The editor is more accessible due to higher contrast icons and menus, and the removal of pop-ups improves the experience for screen reader users. The new content editor compliments Ally capabilities because it helps you make content more accessible at the time you are creating content.

Better Copy and Paste. Pasting content from Word, Excel, and websites is even better. Easily remove extra HTML but retain basic formatting.

Simple Embed. When pasting links to websites such as YouTube, and Vimeo, the videos are automatically embedded for inline playback -- there’s no need to fuss with HTML. Other sites including The New York Times, WordPress, SlideShare and Facebook will embed summary previews.

Display Computer Code. Faculty and students can now share formatted computer code snippets, which is super handy for computer science classes.

The new tool editor will be deployed via an overnight update to our system, which will be visible in Original courses on November 6th. Users should familiarize themselves with the changes to the content editor by referencing the comparison chart FAQ.

As always, if you have any questions about teaching, learning and technology at UMBC, please consider the following options:

National Distance Learning Week 2020 Lunchtime Series

<Tagline>Surviving to Thriving: Rocking the New Normal of e-Learning</Tagline>

One in four students take some of their courses online, and two-thirds do so at a public institution in the same state where they live (Allen, Seaman, Pouline, & Straut, 2016; Allen & Seaman, 2017). This past spring, those numbers increased dramatically when the world turned upside down.

In early November, UMBC celebrates National Distance Learning Week (NDLW) with a series of lunchtime conversations. Our theme, Surviving to Thriving: Rocking the New Normal, celebrates all the successes and challenges our campus community has experienced as we continue to adapt, teach, and learn together during the pandemic. Topics include:

Care & Feeding of Your eLearning Community: Faculty & Students Together

Register via myUMBC ↗︎

Teaching and learning online can make everyone feel a little isolated, especially in today’s world of social distancing. With faculty and students separated, how do we create and maintain community? While you and your students might not be in the same physical space, there are some strategies you can use to build community and increase motivation.

View the recording ▶️

Beyond Blank Screens: Designing Webinars for Interactivity

Although web conferencing tools offer many opportunities to synchronously meet with your students, the experience is not quite a perfect match for the classroom experience. The rhythm of the conversation enhances and expands the interaction between students and instructors. While web conferencing tools support video for visual engagement, not all students want to be on camera. When faced with blank screens, how do we design our live sessions to maximize interactivity?

View the recording ▶️

The 3 Cs of Online Learning: Communicate, Collaborate, Connect

As incoming college/university first-year students, they outlined what they hope their professors will do this fall and how they hope to become effective online students. While students craved structure and engagement, they also wanted clarity and flexibility. What does this mean for you as an online instructor?

View the recording ▶️

In the Spring of 2020 the University System of Maryland surveyed faculty across the state to understand the extent to which they believed open educational resources (OER) did or could have improved students’ access to instructional materials and eased their transition to emergency remote teaching in response to COVID-19. Join our panel of OER adopters to learn more about how they’ve used OER before and after remote instruction, finding quality materials, and helping students easily access online materials.

View the recording ▶️

Online learning provides flexible opportunities to students who cannot come to campus. As UMBC invests in technology, support, outreach, and professional development, we’re faced with an important question about the future of e-Learning: Is COVID-19 merely a temporary distraction or a disruptive innovation? Join our closing roundtable for an active conversation about the future of online learning at UMBC.

View the recording ▶️

Looking for a dose of inspiration to start your week? No need to look any further. Each week, we curate talks on topics that matter NOW for all of us related to resilience, self-care, dealing with uncertain times, as well as ways to stay connected, inspired, and grounded when the earth beneath us is shifting.

Today's talk is 5 steps to remove yourself from drama at work by Anastasia Penright. No matter your industry, you've experienced drama at work. In this funny and all-too-relatable talk, community leader Anastasia Penright outlines five steps you can follow to better coexist with your coworkers and focus on what's really important.

After you watch, we invite you to reflect on the following:

What resonated for you in the video?

What lived experiences do you have, either personally or professionally that align with the core message of the talk?

As you think of your role as a student, employee, or manager what feels relevant and useful to remember?

What are you taking away that feels meaningful - either a new perspective, a potential action, etc.

How might we take better care of ourselves and each other during this time?

If you're a supervisor, consider using this talk for team building purposes! You might send the video ahead of your meeting with several reflection questions on which you'd like your staff to come prepared to speak.
