    <div>Are hallucinations always bad? Most of NLP research presumes a normative stance that they are, but it overlooks the cognitive and communicative affordances of a type of particularly story-like hallucinations (which we'll call confabulations). Consider two general categories of LLM applications: using them as tools, or interacting with them as viable cultural agents. The two have very different training objectives in terms of the tradeoff between factuality and alignment with the human behavior of storytelling, and when it comes to ensuring the latter, LLMs that could effectively confabulate would be especially useful. For instance, confabulations could enable LLMs to perform speculative narration and address omissions in history resulting from social injustice, in the hope of enacting what literary theorist Saidiya Hartman calls "critical fabulation" at scale, and giving interactive storytelling a wider social impact.</div>

In traditional numerical weather prediction frameworks, we solve the governing partial differential equations starting from an initial state. This initialized prediction framework usually involves three stages: 1) generating the initial conditions of the Earth system, 2) running the mathematical representation of the system on a computer forward in time, and 3) analyzing the output and converting it into a format that is useful for end users.</span><div><span><br></span></div>
    <div><span>Machine learning can be used to improve each of these individual stages or to circumvent the three-stage framework altogether, and examples of each will be given in this seminar. More time during the seminar will be dedicated to the challenges surrounding subseasonal prediction, which focuses on lead times of three to four weeks, and how we can use machine learning to both uncover potential biases in our initialized prediction systems and how we can bias-correct them.</span></div>

    <div>Robots are becoming important to enable people in their work and daily life, such as in assistive and performance enhancing devices like prosthetics and exoskeletons, and in teleoperating remote agents to complete tasks in remote or dangerous locations. The communication between people and their robotic devices must be intuitive and responsive in order to be effective. My research interests can be summarized by user-centric design in instances of shared embodiment. These examples demonstrate shared embodiment through shared kinematics in exoskeletons, a joint body in prosthetics, and use as an avatar in teleoperation. My work focuses on utilizing the sense of touch for human-robot communication, acknowledging the important role of haptic information in navigating our environment.</div>
    <div><br></div>
    <div>In this talk, I will discuss my work in two areas. The first is in the design and integration of haptic devices in human-robot systems. This leads to the second, addressing a bottleneck in device saliency by combining methods from psychophysics and contact mechanics. Through my work I aim to create effective systems with intuitive control and haptic feedback in order to create more immersive and efficient interactions for the human utilizing robotic support.</div>
    <div><br></div>
    <div>
    <a href="https://www.linkedin.com/in/janelle-clark/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Janelle Clark</a> is an assistant professor in the UMBC Mechanical Engineering Department. She received her Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering at Rice University, Houston, TX, USA in 2022 in the Mechatronics and Haptic Interfaces (MAHI) Lab and postdoctoral fellowship in the Human-Robot Interaction Laboratory in the Minor School of Computer Science at the University of Massachusetts Lowell. Her research focuses on user-centric design and haptic interfaces for human-robot interactions in instances of shared embodiment, with application domains such as prosthetics, exoskeletons, teleoperation, and virtual reality. Her work combines principles from psychophysics, contact mechanics, robotics, hardware design, and controls to investigate physiological contributions to haptic perception and the creation of intuitive human-in-the-loop control systems.</div>

    <div>I will briefly discuss our demo system recently accepted by <a href="https://www.sigsac.org/ccs/CCS2024/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><strong>CCS 2024</strong></a> that estimates privacy risks of participating in a machine learning task. As many AI models depend on sensitive training data (e.g., identifiable images and text conversations), privacy has increasingly been a major concern in the AI era. Methods like differential privacy allow users to quantify the acceptable privacy loss, which may also lead to significant utility loss. As a result, controlled data access is still the mainstream method for protecting data privacy or controlling privacy leakage in industrial and research settings.  However, there is no quantitative measure for individual data contributors to tell their privacy risks before participating in a machine learning task. We developed the demo prototype FT-PrivacyScore to efficiently and quantitatively estimate the privacy risk of participating in a model fine-tuning task. With FT-PrivacyScore, participants and data consumers can prepare proactively to ensure better protected privacy.</div>
