There has been a significant body of work that explores “misinformation” or “disinformation” in the media. Research has explored how to identify misinformation, and how it spreads or goes viral. When detected, individual pieces of misinformation can be debunked. However, there is evidence that state actors (and others) are starting to launch more sophisticated information operations that try to craft a narrative that will shape public opinion. This involves combining factual information/hard news with opinions and potentially small elements of disinformation to persuade people, particularly in open societies typically found in democracies. While such influence building operations have been a tradition in statecraft, the ability to spread information fast provided by social media, and the removal of gatekeepers from the more traditional media sources, have provided a new potency to this approach. In this talk, we'll talk about disinformation, how easy it is to generate plausible “facts” in the era of Large Language Models, and narrative constructions. We'll also describe our recent work (with PhD student Priyanka Ranade) in creating computational approaches that might detect when a narrative is being constructed.

Anupam Joshi is the Oros Family Professor and Acting Dean of the College of Engineering and Information Technology at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC). He also serves as the Director of UMBC’s Center for Cybersecurity. He was previously the Chair of Computer Science and Electrical Engineering Department, and is an Adjunct Professor at IIT Delhi's School of IT. He is a Fellow of IEEE and of the InCSCoE. He has published over 300 technical papers with an h-index of 91 and over 32,000 citations (per Google scholar), been granted nine patents, and has obtained research support over $22M from National Science Foundation (NSF), NASA, Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), US Dept of Defense (DoD), NIST, IBM, Microsoft, Qualcomm, Northrop Grumman, and Lockheed Martin amongst others.

Dr. Joshi obtained a B.Tech degree from IIT Delhi in 1989, and a Masters and Ph.D. from Purdue University in 1991 and 1993 respectively. His research interests are at the intersection of AI and Systems. He did some of the earliest work in data management and security for mobile and ad-hoc networks using AI approaches. Over the last decade, he has been exploring this intersection to improve Cybersecurity—using Distributed AI approaches for attack detection and resilience in CPS/IoT systems, and policy driven approaches to security and privacy. This work has led not just to papers but technology transfer to small Maryland companies.

Talk: What Does Language Do and What Can We Do With It?

What Does Language Do and What Can We Do With It?

Language is essential to humanity. How we use language is a key part of how we define ourselves and how we relate to each other, as individuals and in society. In recent years, however, the authenticity of how we communicate has been disrupted by the rise of AI-generated content, including images, video, text, and audio, which can be used as powerful vehicles for deception. In this talk, centering the case of audio deepfakes, Mallinson explores why language matters: what it does, how it works, and what we can do with knowledge about how humans use it. Through interdisciplinary collaborations, she asserts, researchers can more fully address pressing challenges of our time—from misinformation and disinformation, to developing ethical and responsible language technologies, to sustaining global linguistic diversity, while advancing equity and inclusion in the humanistic and scientific study of language itself.

Christine Mallinson is Professor of Language, Literacy and Culture and Affiliate Professor of Gender, Women’s, and Sexuality Studies at UMBC, where she also serves as Director of the Center for Social Science Scholarship and Special Assistant for Research & Creative Achievement. The author and editor of seven books, among other publications, including the (2024) volumes Decolonizing Linguistics and Inclusion in Linguistics, Mallinson’s interdisciplinary research examines the intersections of language, culture, education, and society, with a focus on addressing linguistic bias and misinformation for greater access, equity, and inclusion. A Fellow of the Linguistic Society of America, Mallinson is past chair and current member of the LSA Ethics Committee, and she serves on several national and international scholarly journal and academic advisory boards.

The workshop will focus on exploring the utility of interactive narratives, think everything from classic text-adventures like Zork to modern Twine games, to fill a role as the learning environments of choice for language-based tasks including but not limited to storytelling. Previous iterations of this workshop took place successfully, with hundreds of attendees at NeurIPS 2018, NeurIPS 2020, and NAACL 2022. Since then, the community of people working in this area has rapidly increased.

This workshop aims to be a centralized place where all researchers involved across many fields can interact and learn from each other. Furthermore, it will act as a showcase to the broader NLP/RL/Game communities on interactive narrative’s place as a learning environment. The program will feature a collection of invited talks in addition to contributed talks and posters from each of these sections of the interactive narrative community and the wider natural language processing and reinforcement learning communities.

Mathematician Alan Turing proposed a simple test to answer the question 'Can machines think?' nearly 75 years ago. Today, the surprising abilities of generative AI systems like ChatGPT make many wonder if we can finally respond positively. Professor Finin will briefly cover AI's history leading up to the recent development of systems using neural networks and large language models like ChatGPT and what to expect in the next few years. He'll touch on what current systems can and cannot do, the ways they can fail (e.g., hallucinations), the larger risks they may enable (e.g., spreading disinformation), and the societal changes they might induce (e.g., changing copyright and education practices). Dr. Finin will finish by outlining the prospects for the good things they will enable and how AI researchers hope to achieve them.
