Artificial Intelligence is reshaping education, challenging traditional frameworks like Bloom's Taxonomy, a hierarchical framework used in education to classify learning objectives and cognitive skills according to their level of complexity. Structured as a pyramid, it progresses from basic lower-order thinking, such as remembering facts, to higher-order skills like analyzing, evaluating, and creating new ideas.

This session introduces a reframed Bloom's Taxonomy that expands beyond "Create" to include a new Transform layer, enabling learners to apply knowledge for real-world and social impact. Expanding on the white paper Reframing Bloom's for the Age of AI, we'll share strategies for embedding AI literacy, fostering critical thinking, and driving academic innovation.

  • Improve accessibility features directly within the LMS, such as alternative text generation, captioning, and adaptive formatting. 
  • Use external AI tools to audit and enhance course materials for universal design and ADA compliance. 
  • Support students with diverse learning needs by providing personalized, accessible pathways and just-in-time resources. 
  • Anticipate ethical and equity considerations when applying AI for accessibility in digital learning environments. 

By the end of this session, attendees will have a toolkit of approaches and examples they can immediately apply to ensure their courses are designed with accessibility at the core -- helping every learner thrive in AI-powered learning spaces.

Participants will practice effective prompting, explore discipline-specific scenarios, and consider assignment design strategies. Examples will touch on advanced features (custom GPTs/GEMs, Canvas Mode, Deep Research Mode, agent mode) related to teaching.

Part II of an Introduction to Generative AI in Teaching Series by John Schumacher, Professor of Sociology, Anthropology and Public Health and a USM Generative AI Pedagogy Fellow for 2025-26. Nina-Simone Edwards from the Georgetown University Institute for Technology Law and Policy will address ethical issues in AI policy for libraries and higher education in an online session at 12-1pm EDT on Wednesday, October 15.

As AI tools are rapidly integrated into library and higher education systems, conversations often focus on functionality over ethics. This presentation zooms out from tool-specific uses to examine the deeper legal, ethical, privacy, and policy implications of AI in academic and library settings. Drawing on current examples and institutional trends, it explores what's often missing: genuine privacy protections and ethical design embedded from the start. From vendor contracts to algorithmic bias, this session highlights the risks of uncritical adoption and the need to move beyond performative ethics. Attendees will leave better equipped to challenge the AI status quo and advocate for thoughtful, user-centered implementation that protects the core values of education and librarianship.

UMBC's Department of Mathematics and Statistics will hold a teaching circle series on "Active Learning and In-class Assessment in the Age of AI", moderated by Professor Manil Suri. The sessions will explore the pedagogical pitfalls and possibilities that new AI systems have opened up, with a focus on Math 200 and 300 level undergraduate courses.

The first session will be held 12-1pm on Monday, October 27, in 409 Sondheim Hall, with subsequent sessions on November 10 and December 8. Participants are encouraged to share their own AI-related classroom experiences at the first meeting.

This first session of the FDC series on AI and teaching introduces the basics of generative AI and its implications for teaching and learning. It focuses on AI literacy by examining what these tools are, what they can and cannot do, basic prompting, ethical and responsible use, and how they may impact classroom practice. Faculty will see short demos of ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and have time for Q&A.
