UMBC CARDS advancing robot communication and cooperation
When two robots are better than one
This video shows a demonstration developed by Information Systems graduate student Pranahith Babu Yarra of two of the group's mobile spot robots cooperating on a common task. One robot detects a possible human presence inside the bunker and communicates this to a second robot, which joins the first one to help analyze the situation. The robots communicate with each other and servers to share data and coordinate their joint activities using the open-source Robot Operating System and Apache Kafka data communication software.

Human-human interactions are fascinating and complex phenomena. However, it is notoriously difficult to study, given the dynamic and multimodal (e.g., audio, verbal, and visual) nature of the interactions. Modern sensors and the computational capability offered by AI/machine learning allow us to process and analyze fine-grained multimodal interaction data at a large scale. In this talk, I will share two studies that characterize and model parent-child interactions using audio/video data recordings, one in math education and another in early childhood parenting intervention contexts. I will discuss the various analytical methods used to derive insights and the implications for designing AI-supported coaching systems for realizing societal impacts at a large scale. I will also examine the challenges of working with multimodal interaction data.
Lujie Karen Chen is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Information Systems at UMBC, where she leads the
Laboratory for Informatics for Human Flourishing. She has almost 20 years of academic and real-world experience in applied machine learning, statistics, data mining, analytics, and visualization. Before joining UMBC, she spent about 15 years at the
Auton Lab at Carnegie Mellon University, where she received her Ph.D. in Information Systems and was a fellow in the Program of Interdisciplinary Educational Research.

Online course on applying AI and HPC to cybersecurity
Apply by March 30, starts on May 20, 2024
UMBC Professor Houbing Herbert Song, in collaboration with Dr. Jiawei Yuan of UMass Dartmouth, will offer an online course on applying AI and high-performance computing knowledge and skills to solve cybersecurity challenges.
The 12-week course starts on May 20, 2024. It consists of instruction in AI, machine learning, and cybersecurity, supported by teaching assistants. It is followed by faculty-guided research projects in multidisciplinary teams of participants from each area.
The pilot course is available to junior or senior undergraduate students, graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, or early-career faculty and researchers in related disciplines in a US institute at the time of participation. Those interested in participating can apply online by March 31, 2024. The course is free, and participants who successfully complete the training course will receive a $1,000 stipend.
The development of this pilot course is supported by collaborative NSF grants OAC-2309760 and OAC-2229976.
