In this presentation two UMBC faculty,
Karen Chen (IS) and
Fow-Sen Choa (CSEE) as well as Kevin Hwang and Kenneth Wang, two students from Glenelg High School in Howard County, MD, will share lessons learned from their joint
paper on using AI to generate multiple choice questions. In particular, they will share findings on how well AI aligns auto-generated questions to
Bloom’s Taxonomy of Learning, and discuss the implications for both faculty and students for supporting students’ own development as self-regulated learners
Note: This will be a hybrid event with lunch provided for registered participants (17 max). As such, the seat limit only applies to in-person attendees. A virtual meeting link will be sent to all registered participants.

NSF funds UMBC faculty to develop tools for data science education
UMBC Professors Lujie Chen (PI) and Shimei Pan (Co-Pi) received an NSF award of over $365,000 from the NSF Innovations in Graduate Education program in collaboration with the University of Central Florida. The project will augment, refine, and pilot Caselet, a scalable case-based practice tool, by leveraging AI, machine learning, and data analytics approaches, including large language models (LLMs).
The new effort will support the development of data science problem-solving skills in cognitive (the knowledge and skills themselves) and metacognitive domains (the skills for learning how to learn). It addresses the rapidly changing landscape of education in computing and data-intensive courses regarding what and how we teach. The project will augment and refine the Caselet practice tool in three dimensions to support scalable deployment and adoption through an iterative design and test framework.
Caselet will be extended with new features and piloted and tested by up to 1000 students drawn from three graduate programs over at UMBC. The work will focus on three tasks to address scale-up challenges. The first task will explore the approach to help scale up the authoring of Caselet using Large Language Models. The second task aims to scale up the cognitive skills assessment in data science problem solving using machine learning models to track students’ skill mastery at a refined level of precision. The third task will focus on the scalable assessment of metacognitive competencies related to data science problem-solving through multichannel multimodal data collection in controlled lab environments and course-based and self-paced settings.

This week three UMBC faculty had papers in the Second
Teaching and Learning with AI Conference held in Orlando and organized by the University of Central Florida.
To Create or Poison? Natural Language AI Image Generators: A Controversial Tool
AI has grabbed headlines and sparked fervid debates among visual artists and faculty. This presentation will open an opportunity to engage on the topic of natural language AI generative image engines like Midjourney and the controversies that attend them, such as the illicit use of artists’ works to train the systems and the efforts to “poison” these generators. Timothy Nohe has investigated these tools, and exhibited works that allow him to speculate on engineered biomaterials and plants. As a graduate assistant to the late AI pioneering artist Harold Cohen, he brings over 30 years of experience to this conversation.
AI Tools to Make Class Activities More Inclusive and Accessible for Students with Learning Challenges

We present a variety of innovative AI tools that show significant potential in enhancing the experience of students with learning challenges. These tools, some of which are already available and others actively in development, leverage the power of AI to address a range of challenges. These include the creation of art for the visually impaired, support for students with Dyslexia/Dyscalculia, writing tools for students with Dysgraphia, etc. We have developed activities that consider different learning styles, abilities, and limitations of the students with the help of AI. A brief presentation will follow a group discussion on the limitless possibilities.
Rubric for Grading Assignments that Explicitly Allowed Students to use Generative AI

Grading of assignments created with the help of Generative AI tools poses a major challenge to instructors who were trained on rubrics developed decades ago. Such rubrics are incapable of handling situations where the work is clearly a violation of honor agreements. We propose a set of metrics that may be useful for grading student work that is at least partially generated with the help of AI. The audience is encouraged to bring their own ideas as explicit feedback will be sought and will be part of the discussion.

Lujie Karen Chen recently won an NSF CAREER award that puts students at the center of learning analytics—not just as subjects who supply data, but also as the designers of analytical tools and users of the insights they provide. Her five-year project,
Teaching to Empower with Learning Analytics for College Students by College Students, will explore an innovative approach to empower students to become productive users and creators of learning analytics, tools that use educational data to enhance learning.
Chen’s
Lab for Informatics for Human Flourishing is dedicated to using data to improve people’s lives. Education is a key pathway to advance human flourishing, Chen says, and she looks forward to improving student learning experiences and outcomes through her CAREER award project.

Picture this: You are in a classroom where you are free to use GPT - but should you? This session invites you to explore this dilemma. We will discuss the pros and cons of GPT in education, considering its impact on your learning, future career, and life in an AI-driven era, using examples from Dr. Chen's experience teaching two Data Science courses (one undergraduate and one graduate level) at UMBC in Fall 2023, where students were allowed to freely use GPT. Dr. Chen will share insights gained from identifying GPT-generated work, and discuss strategies for responsibly and productively engaging GPT as your personal AI assistant.
Lujie Karen Chen is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Information Systems at UMBC, where she leads the
Laboratory for Informatics for Human Flourishing. She has almost 20 years of academic and real-world experience in applied machine learning, statistics, data mining, analytics, and visualization. Before joining UMBC, she spent about 15 years at the
Auton Lab at Carnegie Mellon University, where she received her Ph.D. in Information Systems and was a fellow in the Program of Interdisciplinary Educational Research.

Incorporating Generative AI into Learning Experiences
A virtual showcase on Friday, 26 April 2024 via Zoom
Colleagues from across Maryland Higher Education institutions are invited to save the date for this virtual showcase, which will take place on Friday, April 26, 2024 from 10:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. The event will take place online via Zoom.
Registration will open in early March 2024 on this event page. To be notified when registration opens, please contact cai@usmd.edu. The sponsoring organizations will also notify their constituents when registration opens.
Faculty, staff, and faculty/staff/student teams from across Maryland Higher Education institutions who have engaged in the use of Generative AI as part of assignments and learning activities are invited to propose sessions for the Incorporating Generative AI into Learning Experiences Virtual Showcase, taking place via Zoom on Friday, April 26, 2024, from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm ET.
