Digital Storytelling Workshop: 2:45 p.m. - 4:30 p.m.
In the aftermath of the death of Freddie Gray in April 2015, we need conversations that bring together a variety of voices and communities to address the intersections of poverty, race, ethnicity, and gender and help create new stories about Baltimore. This event will highlight Baltimore communities and stories through conversations about the past, present, and future of the city. Participants will explore questions about equity, identity, immigration, and belonging and discuss how residents' experiences are shaped in and through their neighborhoods. After the conversation, participants can also learn how to use digital storytelling as a way to record and disseminate their voices.

PSS Senator and CUSS Rep nominations now being accepted
Nominate yourself or colleague by 4/15!
Nominations are now being accepted for Professional Staff Senate and Council of University System Staff. There are nine senator positions and two CUSS positions available for the 2016-2018 term.
Nominees must be exempt staff employees and have been employed at UMBC for at least one year.
Self nominate or nominate a colleague
HERE. The nomination form must be submitted by April 15. Nominees will be contacted in order to confirm their interest in running for the position.
Elections for the senator will be held in late April.

Proposed by Senators Josh Massey and Collin Sullivan, the SRC will ensure each SGA officer who receives a stipend is completing the job you, the students, hired them for. The SRC will not act as a grounds for impeachment if a member does not receive their stipend - however, it may prompt for further investigation from other members in the SGA. All decisions made by the SRC will be made publicly available via
the new SGA website and the
SGA group on myUMBC.
After a few weeks of discussions with the SGA Senate and Finance Board, we are opening this up to the student body for review. We would love to hear feedback from you regarding this new system. Please review

List of 2016 SGA Candidates
Below is a list of the students who submitted applications to run for SGA positions in the April election. This list is preliminary and not final (the names listed below will be checked for eligibility and may appear differently on the ballot, including their order).
All candidates must receive a number of votes equal to at least 5% of the number of total votes cast in the election. Write-in votes are permitted in SGA elections. Candidates are currently elected by plurality, however the SGA Senate and Finance Board are currently considering changing the process by which winners are identified in the President/Executive Vice President, Treasurer, and Vice President for Student Organization contests. For Senate, the top eleven vote-getters will be elected; for Finance Board, the top five vote-getters will be elected.
The election will take place on Monday, April 18th, Tuesday, April 19th and Wednesday, April 20th.
The results will be released on Friday, April 22nd at 12:00 p.m. in the Student Organization Space on the 2nd Floor of The Commons.
All candidates will receive an e-mail message from the Election Board Chair with information about candidate information sessions, SGA Election Rules, and other important information.

SGA Considers Instant Runoff Voting System - Survey
SGA Proposes an Instant Runoff Voting System!

The Legislative Branch of SGA is considering a new voting system and would like student input!
SGA Senator Evan Leiter-Mason is working on an initiative to reform the voting system here at UMBC. The goal of this initiative is to foster a more democratic, civil voting environment for all students.
In order to ensure that Executive officers (President/Executive Vice President, Vice President of Student Organizations, Treasurer) are only elected by a majority of student votes, Evan is proposing that SGA use an instant runoff voting system.
Instant-runoff voting is an electoral system used to elect a single winner from a field of more than two candidates. It is a preferential voting system in which voters rank the candidates in order of preference rather than voting for a single candidate. This system will conveniently require only a single round of voting.
Ballots are initially distributed based on each voter’s first preference. If a candidate secures a majority of votes cast, that candidate wins. Otherwise, the candidate with the fewest votes is eliminated. Ballots assigned to the eliminated candidate are recounted and added to the totals of the remaining candidates based on who is ranked next on each ballot. This process continues until one candidate wins by obtaining a majority of the votes. (from Wikipedia)

get directions) for a hot beverage and free glow-in-the-dark UMBC swag while you're passing through Baltimore's inaugural celebration of light and ideas.The lighting begins downtown at 7:00 PM, so we hope you'll plan to arrive around then!
Plus, check out these special receptions we’ve planned for alumni groups:Within the Black and Gold Lounge, you’ll also be able to test out UMBC’s new Retriever Stories site, where members of the UMBC community can tell stories of the university’s past and present, and representatives from the Albin O. Kuhn Library archives will be on hand Tuesday and Friday to talk UMBC history.The UMBC Bookstore will also be on site with 50th Anniversary and UMBC merchandise.
Several members of the UMBC community will be showing work at Light City, including Symmes Gardner, director of UMBC’s Center for Art, Design and Visual Culture, who will exhibit a video installation titled “1,001 Lux;" UMBC associate professors of visual arts Kelley Bell, M.F.A. ’06, imaging and digital arts, and Corrie Parks, who will display a new work, “Project Aquaculture,” at the Columbus Center; and Colette Searls, chair of UMBC’s theatre department, who will be exhibiting a work that combines animation, live theater, and puppetry featuring a crab named Kendra. Mina Cheon, M.F.A. '02, imaging and digital arts, will exhibit an installation of light sculptures called Diamonds Light Baltimore, Adam Trice '04, English, will perform with the band Red Sammy, and staff member Delana Gregg M.A. '04, ISD, will perform with the group Fluid Movement.
UMBC will be a founding sponsor of LightCityU: Powering Social Change, a series of conferences (held concurrently with Light City) that will explore social innovation, health innovation, sustainability innovation, and creative innovation. UMBC President Freeman A. Hrabowski, III,will deliver keynote remarks at the social innovation conference on March 29.

From the Student Fee Advisory Board:
In addition to tuition, every student at UMBC pays mandatory fees that support student life on campus. These fees are broken down into six categories: Athletics, Technology, The Commons, Transportation, Auxiliary Facilities, and Student Activities.
Every year, UMBC engages students in a process to review each of these fees and assess how to increase and allocate their funding. Student input is a valuable component of the fee review process and the SGA Student Fee Advisory Board makes a formal recommendation to approve or amend each fee on behalf of students.
Below is a link to the 2016 Student Mandatory Fee Review Survey. It is an online form that explains the details of proposed fee increases and collects your input on how you feel about each fee and its related expenditures. The fee advisory board uses this data to directly advocate for fees and expenditures that students support.
It it immensely important that you take and share this survey so the largest possible percentage of students' direct feedback can be represented by the Board and its recommendations. So paw this post and share it on facebook!

The 2016 SGA Candidate Application is now live!
This election needs great candidates, and now you can make sure you're one of them. A description of the requirements and responsibilities of each of the positions is attached.
The application is due at noon on Friday, March 25th.
