The Provost’s Office and Staff Awards Committee are delighted to invite students, faculty, and staff to nominate a staff member for a University System of Maryland Board of Regents Award in the category of “extraordinary public service.” The criteria for this award are:

The individual has demonstrated personal dedication to a project or cause that has definitively improved the greater community

The staff member has, in a collaborative and sustained manner throughout his/her career, made a difference in the larger community

There is a sustained record over a period of years of the staff member making contributions through his/her role in the University (rather than as a private citizen)

We hope you will help us to recognize the important contributions of staff members working to improve the quality of life for others at UMBC or in the larger community. Winners of Board of Regents awards receive $1,000 and a plaque, as well as recognition at UMBC’s spring faculty and staff awards ceremony. You can help create a ripple effect of community engagement by nominating a staff member whose creativity, skill, and commitment as a change agent offer a model to all of us in the UMBC community.

Nominations in all categories of staff awards are due on September 14, 2012. Information about all categories of awards, the nomination and selection process, and the simple forms needed to submit a nomination can be found athttp://www.umbc.edu/provost/StaffAwards/. For more information, please contact me.

Contact the author, Beth Wells, at bwells@umbc.edu.

UMBC President Freeman Hrabowski addresses the crowd at Election Night Extravaganza in 2008.

Are you looking for a way to get involved with this year's election or refuel your creative juices before the school year starts? SGA needs your talent!

This year we will host Election Night Extravaganza after the polls close on November 6th. We hold this event every four years to celebrate our ability to vote and to watch the election returns and see who will be our representatives for the next four years. There will also be some exciting referenda on this year's ballot for Maryland voters, so this election is more important than ever. It'll be a fun night with lots of food, games, and friends.

We are eagerly looking for a logo, t-shirt design, and poster to help students recognize Election Night Extravaganza and other election related events. Designs should be patriotic, creative, and appropriate. If you think you have a great idea, send your designs to SGA's Director of Community and Governmental Affairs Meghan Carpenter at cmeg1@umbc.edu by September 4th. The Planning Committee will choose a design to be seen around campus and the community, and the winning designer will get a prize!

Best of luck!

SGA 2012-2013 Executive Branch Application

<Tagline>Let's Make UMBC Ours!</Tagline>

Welcome to the 2012-2013 Student Government Association Executive Branch Application!

The Student Government Association (SGA) is the voice of the undergraduate students at UMBC. Serving as one of the governing bodies at UMBC, the SGA meets with key administrators and approves campus-wide policies in support of an active, academically enriched, social student environment. The SGA has an Executive Branch, Senate, Finance Board, and Judicial Branch. SGA’s purpose is to organize and support undergraduate students in creating distinctive community, co-curricular and academic experiences; identify and voice students’ hopes and concerns; engage students in campus activities and decision-making; build mutually beneficial partnerships with individuals and organizations on and off campus and promote and defend students’ welfare.

The SGA Executive Branch is comprised of Directors, Assistant Directors, and staff members that work to support departments within the SGA. All three are critical to make sure that our organization is actively pursuing student initiatives. These non-elected positions advocate for student concerns throughout specific areas of student life on campus.

The SGA Treasurer and Vice President of Student Organizations also have applications for staff members. The Financial Support Team works with the SGA Treasurer to ensure that student organizations are being supported through the SGA Funding Process. Student Organization Support is a part of SGA headed by the Vice President of Student Organizations to ensure that student organization needs are being met throughout the year.

Feel free to apply to more than one position! The executive staff application will be on a rolling basis. For the rest of the applications be sure to have them completed by July 1st.
