We have a question that maybe you can help us answer!

COMAR (The Code of Maryland Regulations) 13B.08.13.03 details the Conroy-Cryor Scholarship, for student Veterans, service members, and some dependent family members meeting specific criteria.

At the Involvement Fest we were asked: Is there a GPA threshold to maintain the scholarship in good standing?

I looked at COMAR, and at several other sources, and could not find an answer.

It is also expected that these emails will increase over the coming week based on what other universities are experiencing. These emails range from threatening to expose secrets, asking for information, demanding bitcoin, or pretending that your account will be turned off if you don't reply, and many of these look as if they are sent from a user's own account. 

To that end, I've conferred with faculty and staff shared governance leadership and we are putting some additional protections in place to quarantine these emails so they don't reach anyone's inboxes. 

This is the next step in protection from the warnings we added to messages identified as phishing back in late November. We will be monitoring this situation over the break, but we believe making this change will help prevent people's inboxes from being flooded by these messages going forward.

TSC Student Consultant Job Description

Technology Support Center (TSC) student consultants are the first points of technical contact for the UMBC community and those who do well often go on to work in other areas of the Division of Information Technology (DoIT). Minimally, consultants are expected to provide initial triage and support for a wide range of information technologies including accounts, hardware, instructional technologies, networking, software, telecommunications, and basic web development.


Responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Provide technical assistance to users by phone, online and in person;
  • Answer TSC phones in a professional and courteous manner;
  • Create, update and resolve tickets in the Request Tracker (RT) ticketing system;
  • Create, update, suggest and recommend relevant FAQ articles to users (www.umbc.edu/faq);
  • Provide direct assistance to users on technical issues they cannot easily resolve on their own;
  • Respond to all work-related communications in a timely manner;
  • Escalate urgent problems to the Full-Time staff, as appropriate.

Required Skills and Experience

  • Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate by phone or in person.
  • Demonstrated writing ability.
  • Demonstrated ability to achieve successful outcomes in handling difficult situations and customers.
  • Demonstrated analytical and troubleshooting skills.
  • Ability & willingness to learn coupled with a clear understanding of one’s technical abilities, so as to triage and escalate an issue that leads to an effective solution for the user.

At this time, they have not given an ETA for services to be restored. We will be monitoring the service and will post as soon as we have an update. If anyone would like to check their service dashboard, you can go to the following site which they will be updating throughout the outage.

This issue appears to have started around 9:30 this morning, and effects not only login, but the integration with other services like Docusign and RT. We apologize for the inconvenience this is causing. Hopefully they will get services restored shortly.

DoIT system folks have added DocuSign to the list of OK emails and hope that the Google email system will begin using that to avoid the SPAM designation.

Another action that can be done is users reporting the emails in their SPAM folders as Not SPAM. Here is a message from DoIT's Andy Leeds on this option: "Users marking the messages as not spam is also supposed to help the Google AI learn to not spam them"

Also please remember you can go to http://my.umbc.edu/go/docusign which puts you inside the DocuSign Portal where you can see all your envelopes in the various statuses and sign ones in the Action Required status.

Greetings All!

On November 9 members of the Student Service Members, Veterans & Families met with Dr. Renique Kersh, the new Vice President for Student Affairs at UMBC. This meeting served as both a follow-up to our meetings with President Sheares-Ashby, as well as a chance to meet Dr. Kersh and share the goals and concerns of SSMVF. The full room and online participants included representatives from OCSS, the Registrar’s Office, the Center for Democracy and Civic Life, The UMBC Graduate School, the Academic Success Center, and students including military service members and military dependents. We discussed the brief history of our new student service member group, the many reasons why multiple previous groups were short-lived, and ways to improve the SSMVF experience at UMBC. Dr. Kersh was a great listener and took note of our many suggestions, including: (1) UMBC establish a single military Point of Contact (POC) for military affiliated students; (2) Change the SSMVF student organization from a “temporary” club to a permanent entity overseen by the single POC, and (3) Follow common best practices among colleges and universities for serving military-affiliated students. We hope our conversation with Dr. Kersh was the first among many, as we work towards improving the UMBC experience for future SSMVF Retrievers.
