Members of the UMBC SSMVF greeted prospective students and
future Retrievers at the Retriever Day event at the RAC. We talked with quite a
few high school students interested in both UMBC and the role of SSMVF on
campus. We also talked with several parents with military ties who are looking
forward to their kids using GI Bill benefits to help pay for college, and we
met two Veterans who plan to pursue their degrees now that they are separated
from military service. I think at least one was motivated enough by our
presence that UMBC was now a more likely selection among prospective colleges. Since UMBC has no significant outreach to the vast prospective military service member and Veteran population in the Mid-Atlantic region, we were happy to help out.

Quick Recap from our September Meeting
Past, Present, Future!

Greetings All!
I know many of you were unable to attend our Sep 27 meeting
on campus, so here is a brief recap. We had a full room, tasty lunch, and many
new faces- thanks to everyone who could attend! Each week we meet new service
members and Veterans who haven't yet joined UMBC SSMVF or who are unable to
make it to events, and we appreciate the time, effort, and support from
everyone. A big thanks to Alex Getachew and our OCSS supporters for their partnership,
and we welcomed Mr. Dennis Walker, Jr., UMBC’s new Assistant Director for
Adult-Learners and Veteran Student (student service member) Success. We know
Dennis will be a great addition to UMBC, and we look forward to working as
partners to improve the UMBC experience for service members and their families.
After introductions, we reviewed our progress over the last
18 months, from the dissolution of the previous student Veteran group, to our
formation of a new organization for student military service members, Veterans,
and their families. We discussed our meetings with various leaders of UMBC and University
of Maryland system, discussed problems and concerns, and laid out a vision for
what we’d like to achieve over the next 18 months. We also discussed future fun
events. Watch for a brief survey- we hope you’ll add your input, suggestions,
and ideas.

The DoIT Technology Support Center is looking to hire additional student consultants to work during the fall semester and beyond. TSC Student Consultant Job Description
Technology Support Center (TSC) student consultants are the first points of technical contact for the UMBC community and those who do well often go on to work in other areas of the Division of Information Technology (DoIT). Minimally, consultants are expected to provide initial triage and support for a wide range of information technologies including accounts, hardware, instructional technologies, networking, software, telecommunications, and basic web development.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:
- Provide technical assistance to users by phone, online and in person;
- Answer TSC phones in a professional and courteous manner;
- Create, update and resolve tickets in the Request Tracker (RT) ticketing system;
- Create, update, suggest and recommend relevant FAQ articles to users (www.umbc.edu/faq);
- Provide direct assistance to users on technical issues they cannot easily resolve on their own;
- Respond to all work-related communications in a timely manner;
- Escalate urgent problems to the Full-Time staff, as appropriate.
Required Skills and Experience
- Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate by phone or in person.
- Demonstrated writing ability.
- Demonstrated ability to achieve successful outcomes in handling difficult situations and customers.
- Demonstrated analytical and troubleshooting skills.
- Ability & willingness to learn coupled with a clear understanding of one’s technical abilities, so as to triage and escalate an issue that leads to an effective solution for the user.

Campus Data Center Outage from Storms Last night
As a result of the storms and campus power blink, the main campus data center briefly lost power around 11:10pm Tuesday night. The power backup systems for the room carried the load through several surges and brownouts, but on one occasions it was unable to recover quickly enough and all data center systems were taken down.
Most user-facing services were back up within a few minutes but the infrastructure groups were working through several issues and validating or correcting the state of systems for the next several hours. As of 2:00am we believe almost everything is back online and fully operational.
One of our central research computing systems, the Ada GPU cluster is only partially online and we will be working to bring it fully back online later this morning.

Major Campus Network Fiber Cut Thursday 8/31
Yesterday morning around 11am the campus suffered a cut to its main fiber optic cable feed that provides Internet connectivity to the campus. The cable was damaged by construction crews located a few miles outside of campus working on a nearby roadway where the cable was buried. Despite the abrupt loss of service to both the main Internet and the national high speed research and education network, all network services failed over automatically to our backup connections.
Everyone may have noticed a 30 second blip in service as all of the connections automatically failed over.
I wanted to thank the network team for their work having built such a resilient network over the years as well as their work throughout the day yesterday identifying the cause of the issue, pinpointing the exact location of the damage and working with crews to expedite the repairs. Our fiber was repaired around 1am and everything was switched back to our primary links.
