The victory of UMBC's Men's basketball team on 3/16/2018 delayed our implementation of system patching on 3/17/2018 as announced here: https://my.umbc.edu/groups/doit/posts/74685
We are rescheduling this needed downtime for this Saturday, 3/31/2018. Only the items below will be affected during this downtime.
On Saturday, 3/31/2018 between 9am and 11am(most systems will only be down for a short period during this time):
- myUMBC lite page will be up resulting in reduced myUMBC functionality
- Wiki will be unavailable
- The sites (wordpress) web hosting environment will be unreachable

Quarterly patching downtime on 3/16 and 3/17
As part of our ongoing commitment to security, the Unix Infrastructure group will be conducting its quarterly system patching on Friday, March 16th and Saturday, March 17th. While many of the systems will be patched without any service disruption, there are some systems which require the downtime of key services. The schedule below outlines which key services will be offline and for how long.
Friday, 3/16/2018 between 5pm and 8pm (most systems will only be down for a short period during this time):
- The web hosting environments (virthost and jabba) will be partially unavailable (pages will be available but any database calls will not work)
- Access to Cyrus and UMBC Webmail (accounts not migrated to UMBC Gmail)
- All mail will be queued up and delivered after the server is patched
- Expected to be unreachable from 5pm to 7pm
- All HFS (user) servers will be offline
- Certain software licenses will be unavailable (autodesk, cadence, idl, schrodinger, xilinx, mathematica)
Saturday, 3/17/2018 between 10am and Noon(most systems will only be down for a short period during this time):
- myUMBC lite page will be up resulting in reduced myUMBC functionality
- Wiki will be unavailable
- The sites (wordpress) web hosting environment will be unreachable

LDAP-Master and Webadmin downtime on 3/15 at 2pm
On Thursday, March 15th starting at 2pm LDAP-Master and Webadmin will be taken down for system maintenance. During this time account creations and password changes will be unavailable. Account authentication and logins will not be affected during this downtime.
The maintenance window will allow staff to apply needed security and application updates. The outage window is expected to last two hours with services being restored by 4pm on Thursday, March 15th.
During the outage window account creations will be queued and then processed upon restoration of services. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact our Technology Support Center at x53838.

Kirby Earns Presidential Distinguished Staff Award
Award Ceremony: Wed., April 4, Noon, UC Ballroom
Congratulations to DoIT Assistant Vice President Joe Kirby, who has been selected to receive the 2018 Presidential Distinguished Staff Award. Along with other recipients and their families, Joe will be honored at the Presidential Faculty and Staff Awards celebration on Wednesday, April 4, at noon in the UC Ballroom. The award also includes a one-time, $2,500 addition to pay.
“I am truly honored to be recognized and grateful for the opportunity to work at UMBC,” says Kirby, who was also recognized for 30 years of service to the campus in 2016.
Kirby is now the third DoIT staff member to receive the Presidential Distinguished Staff Award, following Kevin Joseph, Director of Business Intelligence in 2014, and Vice President of IT and Chief Information Officer (CIO) Jack Suess in 2004.
“Over Joe’s career, he has made many significant contributions to UMBC and DoIT,” said Suess in his nomination letter for Kirby. Among other things, Suess credited Kirby for leading DoIT’s efforts to prepare the campus for the potential ramifications of a Year 2000 (Y2K) “bug,” moving UMBC away from using Social Security Numbers (SSN) as a unique identifier in our IT systems, and evangelizing the use of Request Tracker (RT) as a way to improve campus (not just DoIT) support.
“Joe is a leader who works with many staff behind the scenes to help them use technology to provide better service and support to our UMBC community,” says Suess. “I'm thrilled the campus has recognized Joe's contributions to UMBC through this award!”

Recent Network Issues in the Residence Halls and Apartments
We wanted to update the community on the recent Internet performance issues residential students were experiencing during the first week and a half of the spring semester.
A few days into the semester, we became aware of poor performance in the residence halls and apartments through our diagnostics and through feedback and tickets from students. Over the next week we worked closely with our vendor to triage and determine the exact cause of the issue.
Late Tuesday evening, February 6th, we were able to pinpoint the issue and deploy a solution to the problem. Since that time we have been monitoring the system and working with students to ensure the system was functioning correctly. After several days of testing and validation we emailed all the students residing on campus to let them know we believe this issue has been resolved and to encourage them to report any ongoing problems through https://rt.umbc.edu
I would again like to thank everyone for their cooperation, feedback and the detailed information provided by students that helped us get to the bottom of this issue. This kind of collaboration and communication contributes a lot to our ability to diagnose complex issues such as this. Technology Support Center To Be Closed January 19, 12-2:30PM
DoIT's Technology Support Center will be closed from 12PM-2:30PM, Friday, January 19th to allow our staff to attend our department-wide meeting.

umbc.edu/faq for answers to many frequent questions. If you require further assistance, we ask that you please submit a ticket online by going to
my.umbc.edu/help.
These vulnerabilities are related to weaknesses in the way that most modern computer processors operate, and most computing devices are impacted. At this point, there are no known incidents where the vulnerability has been exploited, and no known malware, based on the vulnerability, is known to exist. DoIT security staff are monitoring local and national security groups to make sure that we address any threats as they develop.
Given that most computing devices are impacted by these issues, many operating system vendors are developing software updates to address the vulnerabilities. In order to ensure that the updates themselves do not cause any issues, DoIT will test the updates as they become available. Once we have verified that the updates are safe, we will work with the community to apply the updates as appropriate.

TSC Student Consultant Job Description
Technology Support Center (TSC) student consultants are the first points of technical contact for the UMBC community and those who do well often go on to work in other areas of the Division of Information Technology (DoIT). Minimally, consultants are expected to provide initial triage and support for a wide-range of information technologies including accounts, hardware, instructional technologies, networking, software, telecommunications, and basic web development.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:
- Provide technical assistance to users by phone, online and in person;
- Answer TSC phones in a professional and courteous manner;
- Create, update and resolve tickets in the Request Tracker (RT) ticketing system;
- Create, update, suggest and recommend relevant FAQ articles to users (www.umbc.edu/faq);
- Provide direct assistance to users on technical issues they cannot easily resolve on their own;
- Complete in-person or online training about quality support as defined in umbc.edu/go/ticketrubric;
- Respond to all work-related communications in a timely manner;
- Escalate urgent problems to the Full-Time staff, as appropriate.
Required Skills and Experience
- Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate by phone or in person.
- Demonstrated writing ability.
- Demonstrated ability to achieve successful outcomes in handling difficult situations and customers.
- Demonstrated analytical and troubleshooting skills.
- Ability & willingness to learn coupled with a clear understanding of one’s technical abilities, so as to triage and escalate an issue that leads to an effective solution for the user.

- Certain software licenses will be unavailable (autodesk, cadence, idl, schrodinger, xilinx, mathematica)
- RT will be offline between 5pm and 6pm
Saturday, 12/30/2017 between 10am and Noon(most systems will only be down for a short period during this time):
- myUMBC lite page will be up resulting in reduced myUMBC functionality
- Wiki will be unavailable
- The sites (wordpress) web hosting environment will be unreachable

LDAP-Master and Webadmin downtime on 12/21 at 2pm
On Thursday, December 21st starting at 2pm LDAP-Master and Webadmin will be taken down for system maintenance. During this time account creations and password changes will be unavailable. Account authentication and logins will not be affected during this downtime.
The maintenance window will allow staff to apply needed security and application updates. The outage window is expected to last two hours with services being restored by 4pm on Thursday, December 21st.
During the outage window account creations will be queued and then processed upon restoration of services. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact our Technology Support Center at x53838.
