Linux Operating System Now Virtualized In Windows Labs Mac labs feature all three operating systems on one machine
The Linux operating system is now virtualized in all DoIT supported Windows labs. Before, users would have to turn on a Windows machine and choose what operating system to boot into, Windows or Linux. 

With the Linux OS virtualized within Windows OS, users boot straight to Windows and then have the option of selecting Linux as a virtualization option, creating a separate screen. This allows users to bounce back and forth between the two without having to restart their computer. 

The Mac labs will feature all three operating systems on one machine. Before, in Mac labs you would have to select at boot whether to run Mac OS X or Windows. Now, users have the option to boot into Windows and run a virtual Linux window as well. 

The benefits for this extend to all faculty, staff and students. Courses are now no longer restricted to specific labs, while users will gain more flexibility in accomplishing whatever they need to do.

Collin Sullivan, Turning Technologies Intern

Collin Sullivan has joined the UMBC Instructional Technology team as the new Turning Technologies Intern. This intern program offers students the opportunity to work with faculty to leverage the use of clickers in the classroom. Collin comes to us with a wealth of knowledge through his experience working with Howard County Public Schools Instructional Technology department. 

Collin is an incoming freshman at UMBC, planning to double major in Information Systems and Economics, with a minor in Political Science. He graduated from Long Reach High School in Columbia, Maryland. During his freshman year, he delivered professional development workshops for teachers that focused on incorporating technology into their classrooms. Collin also served as a student member on a board that was tasked with implementation of a countywide Bring Your Own Device program. Collin has written articles for the superintendent’s blog about the importance of technology in the classroom, and was also featured in the online EdSurge Magazine.

Collin is thrilled to be interning with Turning Technologies and working alongside of the Instructional Technology Team at UMBC. He is most looking forward to working with faculty to implement the use of clickers in their classrooms to engage students in course activities.

DoIT would like to recognize its own David Sylva for receiving the Employee of the Quarter award (EOQ). The EOQ program recognizes the outstanding qualities and contributions of employees towards departmental and UMBC’s goals and mission. Sylva was presented his award at a surprise “meeting” on July 21, 2015.

In order to be eligible for the award, you must have been been employed at UMBC for 2 years and have made contributions to your department. Sylva began his career at UMBC in 2004 as a specialist for DoIT and has maintained his position to this day and has made several contributions with the most recent one bringing electronic time sheets to UMBC.

David was the technical lead for the new electronic time sheets. This enhancement was rolled out with few issues due in part to his diligence in meeting with the Payroll preparers the first pay cycle to walk them through the new processes.

Lisa Drouillard, Director of Payroll, said “[David] has a positive attitude and is willing to help in any way he can. He has been instrumental in the electronic time sheet implementation and we greatly appreciate his hard work.”

Sylva is continuing to enhance the electronic time sheet process by developing an interface with the time clock system, so that departments that use the time clock system can automatically interface that time to PeopleSoft, creating big efficiency gains. 

There are several perks for receiving the EOQ award, a check for $500, a special employee parking space, one day of administrative leave, a certificate, his name on a plaque located on the fifth floor of the Administration building, and an invitation to the annual Service Award Ceremony for all the recipients of the quarterly award.  Sylva however declined the check for $500 as he regularly donates to the UMBC Foundation. 


When not working at UMBC, Sylva volunteers at his daughter’s school and works on improving his IT skills.

Previously, UMBC scheduled downtime downtime for monthly server updates and planned major software updates once per year. Our revised schedule ensures an overall system roadmap of consistent quality checks to address audit fixes, tool tweaks, and core updates with minimal or reduced disruption of service for the majority of our users.

When: Weekly, Friday mornings, 2 AM - 6 AM
Why: Routine data center maintenance
What happens: No downtime. In a rare scenario, users could notice minor connectivity issues. We advise students to save their work frequently and avoid taking tests if possible.

When: Monthly, Saturday mornings, 2 AM - 5 AM
Why: Updates to core tools and services as required by Blackboard
What happens: No downtime, yet requires a rolling restart. Users should not notice any disruption in service, but we advise students to save their work frequently and avoid taking tests if possible.

When: Twice per semester, Saturday mornings, 2 AM - 5 AM
Why: Audit fixes, cumulative updates as required by Blackboard. 
What happens: Typically 3-hours downtime. Users will be unable to access the system during this maintenance window.

When: Twice per year, usually between major semesters (May / December). Date to be posted at least 30 days in advance.
Why: Major updates as required by Blackboard
What happens: Typically 15-hours of  downtime. Users will be unable to access the system during this maintenance window.

The UMBC Blackboard team makes every effort to identify a day and time period that should have the least impact on our users. We also attempt to notify the campus at least 5 days in advance of short downtimes; however, at times unanticipated maintenance windows are necessary to address important updates for optimal system performance.

During the Spring semester, UMBC's Blackboard site benefited from a 99.99% uptime. Planning ahead with routine application updates and server check-ups helps maintain our Blackboard site. We appreciate your patience as we continue to improve our systems to bring you a better Blackboard experience.

UPDATED JULY 2017:
Following the migration to Blackboard's cloud services, the major software updates that occur twice a year should no longer require lengthy downtimes. Some tools and services may be slower to respond as those backend processes restart across supporting servers. On a rare occasion during these biannual updates, Blackboard may take the system down for 1-2 hours for infrastructure updates.

In addition to working in the Studio for the past seven years, first as an MFA grad assistant, and then full time upon her graduation in 2010, Christine is a talented performance artist, author and stand-up comic, which she wants to pursue full time. During this transition we’ll continue to consult with Christine on a part-time basis, but also wish her the best in all her pursuits.

Reflecting on her time at UMBC, Christine highlights her work with Digital Storytelling on-campus. “Specifically, I've enjoyed working with Bill [Shewridge] on projects such as, the Sparrow's Point Steel Workers documentary (Mill Stories) and working with retirees through the Erickson School of Aging Studies,” says Christine, who also enjoyed teaching Digital Stories in collaboration with MCS, Public History and the Linehan Artist Scholars program. “The best part about my experience over the past 5 years has been working with such a vast array of departments and people on campus, from HR to Athletics.”

In the interim, Dustin Roddy, another video producer in the Studio, will be handling coordination of Studio projects on a temporary basis. Like Christine, Dustin has worked on several UMBC Digital Storytelling projects, first as a student for one year, and since his 2014 graduation from UMBC, with majors in Media & Communications Studies and American Studies. In addition to his work at UMBC, Dustin has freelanced as a camera operator for a number of extreme sports events broadcast online and for national sports networks, and worked as a supervisor for Vans outdoor apparel. Students love instructor feedback and want to know how they are performing in their courses. With the start of the new academic year quickly approaching, why not try something new in your courses?

The Grade Center is the instructor’s central hub for keeping track of student assignments to grade, reviewing submitted assessments, and tracking student performance. Whenever a graded items, such as an assignment or assessments, is created in a Bb course, the system will automatically create a column in the Grade Center.

Save time and paper by requiring students to submit assignments through Blackboard. Then use the Inline Grading tool to embed feedback. Describe expectations and standardize the evaluation process with Rubrics.


Instructors can customize many Grade Center features, such as grading schemas (points/percentages converted to letter grades), categories (labs, projects), color coding (e.g., red to indicate at risk) and other important column information. The Grade Center also works well with many other areas of Blackboard including the Retention Center.

Qwickly is new tool deployed to faculty in Blackboard during the summer. It was designed to dramatically simplify the workflow of common tasks frequently performed by faculty.

One great example is the Make Course Available Tool. Consider the current multi-step workflow to make a course available in Blackboard: 

  1. Go into the course
  2. Open the Control Panel
  3. Expand the Properties menu
  4. Change the value of Make Course Available to Yes
  5. Submit the form
  6. Repeat for each course
Qwickly takes this repetitive task and provides instructors with a fast way to make courses available with just 2 clicks! Qwickly also supports:
  • Sending emails to all or some courses at one time
  • Posting announcements to all or some courses at one time
  • Reviewing which courses have items that need grading
To access Qwickly, log into Blackboard and click on the My Blackboard tab. The Qwickly panel is available on the left side of the page. 


These tools are restricted to faculty and TA roles and filtered to the current year (for example, SP2015, SU2015, and FA2015 semesters) for improved performance.

The Android version of the UMBC app is now available on the Google Play Store. The app requires Android version 4.1 and up. There is no login required, as you can access all the features as a guest. If you do have an account, log in once to the UMBC app and from that point forward use a 4-digit pin to quickly log in later.

The design is slightly different in the Android version, Home, Search, Places, and Events are moved to the top but users should expect the same features found in the iOS version launched last month. If logged in, the UMBC app will feature content and resources tailored to you.

In the Home tab, users can browse both the myUMBC and UMBC mobile friendly site and quickly check for updates. Search has a built in QR code scanner and shows what you have used recently, what others are looking for and myUMBC favorites. 

 

Places will display office hours, maps, and upcoming events while Events will show you what is happening now and upcoming events on campus. Just like the iOS version, the app will be updated with more features in the future making it more robust.
