DoIT Organizational Leadershop Changes
Over the last year, we’ve been reviewing the Division of Information Technology (DoIT) organizational structure and focusing on building a broad and strong leadership team. As part of this effort we have looked at how our staff’s duties have changed over the last few years. At the same time, we have seen a number of staff leave to take new positions (Mike Carlin and Jesse Beauman left for UNC-Charlotte) or through retirement.
As a result, there are a number of changes that have taken place in DoIT and we want to update the community on these changes:
Arnold Foelster is now Director, Student Administration. Arnold is focused on operating and supporting our administrative systems used by students and faculty.
Stacy Long is now Director, HR & Finance Systems. Stacy is focused on operating and supporting our administrative systems used for HR and Finance.
Kevin Joseph is now Director, Business Analytics. Kevin oversees the technical implementation and operation of REX and ImageNow.
Todd Haddaway is now Director, Identity & Database Systems. Todd oversees the technical implementation of Identity Management and our Oracle Database Management Systems.
Tony Finneran is now Manager, Finance Systems. Tony is the lead on pre-award and post-award grants management and finance.
Kashka Donaldson is now Coordinator, ImageNow. Kashka oversees the work on ImageNow.
Damian Doyle is now Interim Director, Enterprise Infrastructure. Damian is responsible for the network, servers, storage and high performance computing.
Andrea Mocko is now Acting Coordinator of our Technology Support Center (TSC).

UMBC Achieves InCommon Bronze Certification
UMBC has become the third higher-education organization in the country to become certified for the Bronze Identity Assurance Profile under the
InCommon Assurance Program.
InCommon developed the assurance program as part of its mission to provide secure and privacy-preserving trust services for its participants. Enabling higher-value, higher-risk services requires increased trust by the organizations that run the identity and cloud services.
“UMBC believes Identity management is absolutely essential to campus cyber security, and Bronze represents consensus best practice in identity management,” said Jack Suess, Vice President of Information Technology and CIO at UMBC. “It is in our interest to utilize these best practices in designing and implementing our identity management processes.”
InCommon currently has two US-Government approved assurance profiles — Bronze and Silver. Bronze is comparable to the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Assurance 1 level, which has credential security adequate for basic Internet interactions. Silver, comparable to NIST’s level of Assurance 2, requires proof of identity and has security appropriate for higher-risk transactions.

Alternate Delivery Program Call for Participation Released
Hybrid/Online Course Redesign for Summer and Winter Courses
Faculty who are interested in effective hybrid course delivery are invited to submit a proposal
for this innovative faculty support program.
The Alternate Delivery Program (ADP) offers technical, pedagogical, and financial support to a selected cohort of faculty members who agree to convert an existing in-person course to hybrid delivery mode and offer that course in Summer Session 2015. The 2015 ADP
will begin in January, 2015 with a two day workshop for faculty (January 14th and January 15th) and the course conversion process will continue throughout the spring
semester with technical support from DoIT's Instructional Technology Team.
Proposals will also be considered from faculty who wish to convert a
course to hybrid delivery and offer that course in Winter Session
2016.
For more information, please contact the POCs identified in the ADP Call for Participation, or plan to attend the ADP Information Session in November. The proposal submission deadline is December 5th.

Reminder-Clicker Orders Due to Bookstore by October 24!
Faculty who plan to use clickers for instruction during the Spring 2015 semester will need to have device order(s) submitted to the Bookstore no later than Friday, October 24, 2014. This deadline allows the Bookstore to shop national wholesalers early for used books and items, prepare for buyback, avoid sending back to publishers leftover stock that will be reused next semester, and notify faculty of any availability problems.
The University’s due date for textbook and course materials information is Monday, November 24, 2014. The University has instituted this deadline so that all textbook information, including clicker requirements, may be posted on the Bookstore's website, in adherence with State Law, as students prepare for their Spring 2015 schedules.

VPN malfunctioning after Mac OS X Yosemite upgrade
If you routinely use the UMBC VPN (https://vpn.umbc.edu) and are a Apple Mac user we would strongly recommend waiting and not upgrading to the new OSX Yosemite that came out this past Thursday 10/16. This upgrade will break the functionality of the Juniper Network Connect VPN client. DoIT will be working to test several solutions over the next few days and we hope to release an updated VPN client that will work with the new OS within a week.
Once we have finished our testing and developed documentation for the new client we will post another news article and the Technology Support Center and Desktop Support will be prepared to assist users with any questions regarding the new client.
If you have upgraded to Yosemite and require the VPN, go to
http://rt.umbc.edu to open a support ticket and we will work with you to get you working on the new client before its officially released.

Revamped Alternate Delivery Program Coming Soon
Hybrid/Online Course Redesign for Summer and Winter Courses
If you've considered converting an traditional, face-to-face course for either hybrid or fully online delivery, 2015 could very well be your year! A new, revamped Alternate Delivery Program will be launched in 2015 for full and part-time summer & winter faculty. DoIT's Instructional Technology Team is ready to assist faculty who are interested in converting their course to either hybrid or fully online for delivery in summer 2015 or winter 2016. A Call for Participation will be released later on this month on October 20.
In the meantime, a hybrid design "brown bag" information session,
"What does it mean to teach a hybrid course?" is scheduled next

UPS Malfunction Impacts Campus IT Services
On Wednesday, 10/8/2014, at approximately 10:10 the Engineering building data center suffered a brief power outage. This occurred during routine maintenance of our Uninterrupted Power Supply (UPS) system and caused all servers and equipment within the data center to lose power. DoIT staff worked to restore services based on our disaster recovery plan. By 11:00am many services were restored including:
- Wireless connectivity
- Internet access
- Off campus services including Box and Google services

Mocko Named TSC Acting Coordinator
Effective today, Andrea Mocko has agreed to serve as acting coordinator of the
Technology Support Center (TSC). Andrea has worked as a full-time specialist since summer of 2012, but has supervised all of the TSC’s 12-15 part-time student consultants since January 2013. In addition to hiring and training all student consultants, she developed a new employee orientation guide and took over curation of the popular
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs). During this time, student consultants have resolved nearly half of the TSC’s 100 tickets each week (5k per year).
Prior to earning her bachelor’s degree in Psychology from UMBC in 2012, Andrea worked as a TSC (formerly Help Desk) student consultant for four years. As a senior student consultant, she was also instrumental in the TSC’s
move from the basement of the Engineering Building to the first floor of the Library, next to the
Retriever Learning Center (RLC) in Summer of 2011.
Currently, Andrea is enrolled in UMBC’s Master’s in Information Systems, with a concentration in Human Centered Computing (HCC). She also holds a post-bachelor’s certificate in Instructional Systems Design.

New Features Coming to Blackboard in Winter 2015
Software upgrade is part of migration to managed hosting
As
announced earlier this week, Winter and Spring 2015 courses will be hosted by Blackboard directly instead of by DoIT. As part of this change, we will also be upgrading to the Spring 2014 version of the software (Bb discontinued numbering their service pack releases, but we are essentially operating now with their Fall 2013 version). New features will include the following:
- Integrated SafeAssign
- SafeAssign will be fully integrated with the Assignment creation and grading workflow, allowing you to use embedded feedback tools and rubrics.
- Student Preview
- While in Student Preview mode you can interact with the course as if you were a student, including taking quizzes/tests, submitting assignments, posting to discussions, etc.
- Anonymous & Delegated Grading
- Whenever you want to add another layer of fairness and impartiality to your grading, you can use the anonymous grading feature. Using grades and feedback from more than one grader via delegated grading helps to promote reliability and remove bias. These tools can be used together or separately.
- Achievements for Competency Based Learning
- You can use the achievements tool to create opportunities for students to earn recognition in the form of badges or certificates for certain work and other competency based learning.
- Course Messages Updates
- Anyone enrolled in a course can now receive a notification that they have new course messages from the Updates area in My Blackboard, in the What's New module on both institutional and course module pages, and from email.
- Grading Improvements
- Blackboard redesigned the My Grades page so students can sort and display their grades by what has been graded, what is upcoming, and what has been submitted, but is not yet graded.
- When you create an assessment or assignment with multiple attempts, you can now specify how Blackboard should calculate the grades (e.g., use the last graded attempt, use the highest grade, average all attempts, etc.). Previously, you would have to edit the grade center column after creating the activity.
- You can manually override the total points possible for a test while maintaining the integrity of the scoring.
- Grading Schemas can now have values greater than 100%
- Blackboard will also offer a mobile grading app, BbGrader, for iPad (iOS 7, iOS 8).

Did you know these tools were available NOW?
- Test Access Log
- This tool shows a list of every interaction a students engaged in when taking a test. If a student claims to have started a test, the log will show the time the test was started. If a network or internet disruption occurred during the test for example, the log would show an unusual gap in the time.
- Retention Center
- Discover which students in your course are at risk. Based on preconfigured rules and rules you create, students’ engagement and participation are visually displayed in the Retention Center, quickly alerting you to potential risk. You can communicate with struggling students and help them take immediate action for improvement.
- Test Availability Exceptions
- Use exceptions to provide an accommodation to a disabled student, or provide accommodations for technology and language differences. Select one student, several students, or groups of students.
- Test Feedback Options
- By setting up rules, you can set the release of progressive feedback to keep test results secure and prevent cheating. Students also see their submitted answers marked as correct or incorrect and any feedback you provided.
- Date Management
- Use this tool to easily adjust all content and tool dates in your course. You can choose to adjust dates automatically or individually based on the course’s starting date, the term information, or by number of days when you know exactly how many days you want to adjust dates by.
- Group Management
- Easily see which students are in which groups, including which students are not in any groups. Choose and manage membership for groups sets, and create Grade Center smart views for one or more groups on the All Groups page.

Retired tools in Blackboard include:
- Direct uploads of video and audio files.
- The hosted environment of Blackboard is not designed to support streaming media. Instructors can still upload videos to YouTube and embed that content as unlisted videos, or upload multimedia to Box and link to that content.
- SafeAssignments.
- Blackboard internal plagiarism checking tool will be now fully integrated with the regular Assignment workflow.
- Native collaboration tools (e.g., Virtual Classroom).
- These tools were built on an archaic system and are no longer supported by the vendor. Bb Collaborate is a full suite of web conference tools available in all courses.
