Blackboard to be Upgraded January 4 - 14, 2013 Bb system unavailable after midnight January 3 As previously announced the Division of Information Technology (DoIT) will be upgrading UMBC's production Blackboard (Bb) system from January 4 to 14, 2013.  During this upgrade period the Bb system will be unavailable to the campus community.  All courses and organizations on the current version of Bb will be automatically and seamlessly upgraded to the new version. WT2013 courses will be run on a separate server and will not be affected by the downtime.  The winter server has already been upgraded to the new version of Bb.

What Should Bb Instructors/ Leaders  Do Prior to the Upgrade?

Bb Instructors or Leaders requiring Bb content (including grades) from previous semesters during the upgrade period should download grades or export course content prior to midnight on January 3, 2013.  Once the upgrade begins, all content on the production Bb system will be unavailable.

What New Features Does the Upgrade Include?

The upgrade from Bb Learn version 9.1.6 to version 9.1.9 will improve UMBC's ability to provide Bb support.  There are also a variety of new features and enhancements including:
  • New streamlined interface
  • Enhanced course-to-course navigation
  • Automatic re-grading of changes to assessments
  • "Needs Grading" tool enhancements
  • Course themes based on teaching styles

If you are interested in checking out the new features in Bb Learn 9.1.9 there are several training opportunities available to you.  For those of you new to Blackboard, DoIT is teaming up with the Faculty Development Center (FDC) to offer  3 Blackboard: Back to Basics workshops in January, 2013.  Additionally DoIT has scheduled a variety of informal Bb Drop-in Sessions (both F2F and Virtual)  in December 2012 and January 2013.  Finally DoIT will provide cohort-based training for departments that can assure a minimum of four (4) faculty and/or staff will be present (dates & times TBD).  To request cohort training, submit an "online learning" request via rt.umbc.edu.

Bb course shells for both SP2013 and WT2013 were created on December, 1, 2012.  The course shells for SP2013 are located on the Bb production server at http://blackboard.umbc.edu.  As previously announced WT2013 courses will be run on a separate server at http://bb-winter.umbc.edu.  The Bb production server will be taken offline from January 4 - 14, 2013 while it is being upgraded.  All courses and organizations on the Bb production server will be unavailable during that time.  If you require any past Bb content for your WT2013 courses please make sure to export it prior to midnight January 3, 2013.

Enrollments for both SP2013 and WT2013 courses will continue to be updated daily. Bb shells are available for all courses (designated as lecture, lab, field or discussion) listed in the UMBC Schedule of Classes (SOC), provided that there is an instructor of record listed. The addition of new course sections and instructors will result in new Bb shells being automatically generated each morning. Student enrollment in Bb will continue to mirror the official registration in SA, and will update hourly.

If you are an instructor, and your name is not associated with the course you are teaching in the SOC, please see your departmental scheduling coordinator to get that issue resolved. Once you are listed in the SOC, your Bb course shell will be created automatically.

Additionally in situations where one instructor is teaching multiple sections of the same course, by default all sections will be combined into one Bb course shell. If you want to have separate shells for different sections, or if you need a shell for for a research or independent study course, please submit a new course request or submit an RT ticket with your request.

This project involved a significant amount of engineering and planning to ensure the appropriate power, racks, networks and cabling were in place where needed in advance of the hardware being mounted. Network staff spent months working with the construction company renovating the space and also with the professional movers to coordinate the move. Within DoIT the Networks, Windows and Unix groups spent weeks designing and ensuring the appropriate placement of hardware, cabling and networks in the racks.

The two most notable changes are the following:

Drop Off of Exams:
Exams may be dropped off with Jim Keys on weekdays between 9 AM and 4:30 PM in the ENGR Bldg suite 101. You must have the answer keys filled out correctly, aligned in the same direction, and include a "Testbook Form" cover sheet. See this FAQ to download a copy of the cover sheet, and for answer key instructions. Please make sure to remind your students that they must fill out the Campus ID section of the exam answer sheet correctly. In the event that Jim is not available, any of the Instructional Technology full time staff members can take the exams and create an RT ticket for you indicating exam drop off. Alternatively you may use the after hours secure exam slot outside ENGR Bldg room 004. You must place your exams in a campus envelope and include a "Testbook Form" cover sheet. Envelopes and cover sheets are available on the door to room 004. After depositing your exams in the exam slot, please submit an RT ticket indicating that you have done so. We suggest a standard subject line such as:

Exams dropped off after hours will be retrieved the following morning. Jim will check to see if a corresponding RT ticket was created for each exam he retrieves. If not, he will create one. Scantron exams will be scored within two business days of RT ticket creation date.

Exam Results:
You should expect your exams to be scored within 48 hours of the RT ticket creation date & time. Once exams are scored, the resulting electronic file(s) will be placed in a folder titled "Scantron" in the File System of the corresponding Blackboard course. Reminder: By default, DoIT creates a Blackboard shell for every course in the Schedule of Classes, but it remains unavailable to students until the instructor of record makes it available. As such, only instructor(s) of the Bb course will have access to the course and the Scantron file folder. Notification:
Once the scored Scantron files have been added to the Bb course, the RT ticket will be resolved and you will receive E-mail notification. In the RT ticket resolution message, we will include information on how to locate the test results in your Bb course, and how to upload Scantron grades into your Bb grade center. After you have been notified that the ticket is resolved, you may pick up the exam answer sheets, and corresponding print out from Jim Keys.
