Public Video Art Projection Gallery
Art projections "demo" at the Fine Arts Building
Thursday, February 29, 2024, 6-8 pm
The Center for Art, Design and Visual Culture (CADVC) inaugurates the "demo" of a new public video art projection gallery with work by artist Levester Williams, featuring his work "dreaming of a beyond: Baltimore" (2021-2024). The event will include a conversation between Williams and curator Lisa Freiman. Hot refreshments will be served. Showings of the work will continue on select evenings in late February and early March.
The work is the result of the artist's Exploratory Research Residency at CADVC, ongoing since 2023. During this time, Williams has been researching the histories and mythologies of Cockeysville (Maryland) marble, a material used in many salient objects in the local built environment, including the Washington Monument and iconic exterior steps of Baltimore rowhomes. The film results from this research as well as movement workshops and other activities that included the participation of UMBC students and other Baltimore residents. Artist Nia Hampton, a current IMDA graduate student, and her mother, artist and arts advocate Sheila Gaskins, are featured performers. The filmic work was assisted by IMDA graduate student Bao Nguyen and artist Savannah Knoop, who worked on the project as an intimacy coordinator and facilitator.
dreaming of a beyond: Baltimore is an embodied consideration of the labor histories, and mythologies, surrounding a marble building material that appears throughout Baltimore's built environment. In the movement experiments surrounding the film work, participants negotiated relationships to public space, monumental form, and connections to history. In Williams's words, the project underscores the "intertwined history of African-Americans' plight to self-determined agency and full citizenship, and a rather benign stone."
This public display of an art work-in-process is consistent with CADVC's commitment to showcasing the experimentation of artists and the visual culture of interdisciplinary research. Currently, CADVC's gallery is exhibiting Spectrum of Process, highlighting UMBC faculty approaches to art and culture through rigorous, experimental processes.

Maryland State Arts Council Folklife Apprenticeships
Maryland State Arts Council Folklife Apprenticeships support traditional arts education by funding a master artist and apprentice artist to work together for one year. Grants are $5000. During the grant period, the master artist passes down their knowledge to the apprentice artist. In January 2024, Maryland Traditions staff hosted an information session on how to apply for the Folklife Apprenticeship, including application strategies.

CADVC's Exploratory Reseach Residency
Spring Semester 2024 at UMBC Lion Bros. Building, Baltimore
The Center for Art, Design, and Visual Culture at UMBC (CADVC) hosts an exploratory research residency that allows artists and interdisciplinary collaborators to take advantage of scholarly resources and to build partnerships at UMBC and in the Baltimore region. Artists In Residence (AIRs) are invited to pursue open-ended outcomes, and their engagements may develop into workshops, artworks, or other future projects.
This season, CADVC welcomes three low-residency AIRs who are developing research and creative projects in UMBC and Baltimore. The visiting artists will offer programs open to the general public in the UMBC Lion Brothers building in downtown Baltimore.
Paul Rucker
Paul Rucker is a multimedia visual artist, composer, and musician. His practice often integrates live performance, original musical compositions, and visual art installation. For over two decades, Rucker has used his own brand of art making as a social practice, which illuminates the legacy of enslavement and its relationship to the US prison industrial complex.An avid collector of artifacts and archives, Rucker holds more than 15,000 pieces about the history of the United States. Items that address false narratives of US history and the strategic withholding of historical events are used as a tool of "demonization for colonization." His research visit to Baltimore will focus on Baltimore County and the history of "coordinated exclusion."
Paul Rucker and artist Kim Rice had a public discussion about their research into the history of urban redlining. Rucker and Rice discussed a project-in-process focused on discriminatory real estate practices and the power of art to change spatial injustice.
Tomashi Jackson
Tomashi Jackson is an expanded field painter whose multimedia work investigates the links between history, materiality, and current events. In her residency at CADVC, which began in 2022, she has been developing a body of research focused on the history of and advocacy for alternative art spaces. This work builds on Jackson's existing research that she calls the "Pedagogy Study Hall" project. The project is ongoing.

Levester Williams

The Student Events Board (seb) is hiring! We're looking to hire two undergraduate designers to add to our team in order to create social posts, flyers, merchandise, Quadmania (UMBC's biggest spring festival) promo, and more! This is a paid position where students will not only be working on design projects but will also be planning events to reach the student body. We are looking for students who are passionate in design and creating promo in order to market our events, as well as be student leaders and collaborate with programmers and marketers on the team. Students are expected to work an average of 10 hours a week between designing, collaborating with the team, attending executive board meetings, and planning and supporting events. Research and Process, featuring faculty and students involved in the "Can You Catch a Deep Fake?" and "Artifacts" research projects
Join researchers Lee Boot, Christine Mallinson, and research assistants, Lavon Davis and Zahra Khanjani, for intimate discussions about two critical research activities at UMBC, focused on the topics of climate science and Deep Fake audio technologies. Both of these interdisciplinary research activities use visualization strategies to interpret and understand important changes in our environment and culture. The format of the conversation will be a gallery tour followed by Q+A.

Resume Printing for the Career Fair
The Career Fair is FRIDAY, February 9!
commonvision can help with resume printing! To help with the process email us the following to: commonvision@umbc.edu:
Please note that we will only print these once you come into our office. We will treat these emails as walk-ins and won't have them printed ahead of time.
We only accept Retriever Dollars as payment. You can put cash on your card at the CIC (Commons Information Center) desk in the Lobby of The Commons or put money on your campus card via myUMBC (there is a $10 minimum).
Alternatively, you can use the mobile print kiosks to print. Instructions on how to use the kiosks may be of help. A few notes about the kiosk:
- The printers can only print in black and white
- 8.5 x 11" (letter size) is the only size it prints - any other size will cause the printer to lock up/not print so be sure to check your settings.
Be sure to give yourself enough time to have your prints completed, we will do our best to assist you in a timely manner. There will be lines and wait times the day before and the day of the Career Fair - consider printing early!

Involvement Fest Prints
ATTENTION UMBC student organizations!
Involvement Fest is quickly approaching. commonvision (UMBC Design and Print Center) is here to help with your Involvement Fest prints!
Please note at this time, we can offer flyers and quartercards for Involvement Fest. Other services will have a turnaround time that extends beyond Involvement Fest.
For best consideration, please submit your flyers and quartercards by 5 p.m. Monday, February 5 via commonvision@umbc.edu. Any clubs using carryover funds will need to provide us with a completed RESGAF before printing will begin. Please note outside of chartstrings/club funds we only accept retriever dollars on your campus card.
Something to consider is printing a couple flyers that stay at your table that contain a QR code to your organization's myUMBC group. This may help us to cut down on printing demand and make sure that even if you run out of materials, you still have something people can scan.

GRAPHIC DESIGNER
We're looking for students who are comfortable working in:
Illustrator CC+
Photoshop CC+
InDesign CC+
Bonus Points If:
You have experience in pre- and post-production print, or any other kind of printing skills
You have interest or experience with animation/motion design
You can get super nerdy about typography
You have an interest or experience in photography
Your personality is along the lines of:
Non-negotiables:
Be highly dedicated & organized
Must have a GPA of 2.5 or higher
Must pass a judicial and ECR check
Must have at least 2 on-campus semesters left
Must be able to work at least 15 hours a week
Be an undergraduate student
Please submit a:
Cover letter
Resume
Two references (name and contact information is fine)
Screenshot of your summer AND fall schedule (if you don't have yet that is okay, just send us whether or not you want to start in summer or fall)
Your unofficial transcript
Your portfolio (if not indicated on resume)
