• ART 329: Roman Visual Culture (3 credits) This course explores the painting, sculpture, decorative arts, and architecture created during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries in Rome. Through firsthand experience, the class examines art and architecture within the context in which it was originally created. In addition to visiting historical sites, students experience other aspects of Italian visual culture such as authentic cuisine and music from the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries.

• ART 369 or ART 392: Mobile Imaging in Italy (3 credits) This course introduces students to the latest in mobile imaging technologies, techniques and applications, guiding them to create compelling still images and videos of ancient buildings, art and artifacts within the urban landscape of Rome. This class provides a unique opportunity to explore key historical sites, buildings, parks, and plazas while also learning about a variety of online image sharing platforms as a means to display and disseminate the work created. Students are also introduced to the work of relevant contemporary artists.  

Dear Students,

Apply for Johns Hopkins University’s first annual Richard Macksey National Undergraduate Humanities Research Symposium. This will be a new annual two-day event at our main campus in Baltimore, Maryland and it will offer students across the country the chance to disseminate their humanities research on a national scale. Our event will be this spring, April 3^rd and 4^th, 2020 and our application portal is now open. 

This symposium is open to undergraduate students from any two-year or four-year college or university who would like to present their original scholarship in the humanities. We hope to have 400 participants this year and will also be offering a select number of travel grants to help students afford participation. In addition to the multiple panels of student papers and presentations (including original creative works), we will also have a wonderful keynote delivered by Pulitzer Prize-winning author Anthony Doerr and multiple professional development panels featuring graduate students and faculty in our humanities departments and centers. Students studying all areas of the humanities are welcome to attend.

In conjunction with the exhibition Distal’s Musk: Rosy Keyser (more here), currently on view at the Center for Art, Design and Visual Culture from October 31 through December 14, the CADVC presents a lecture by the artist. 

The lecture will be held in the gallery space of the CADVC.

Rosy Keyser (born 1974 in Baltimore, Maryland) is a Brooklyn-based, American contemporary painter and sculptor, known for working in large-scale gestural, tactile abstraction. Frequently incorporating found detritus in her work such as beer cans, tarp, and sawdust, Keyser’s work investigates the tensions, instability, and transformations inherent in painting and sculpture. She is represented by CFA, Berlin and Maccarone Gallery in New York. Keyser has exhibited at institutions including Walker Art Center, Minneapolis, Minnesota, The Zabludowicz Collection, London, Louisiana Museum of Modern Art, Humlebaek, Denmark, and Ballroom Marfa, Texas, and has work in collections of several institutions, including The Louisiana Museum of Modern Art, Humlebæk, Denmark, The Maxine and Stuart Frankel Foundation, Bloomfield Hills, MI,The Portland Museum of Art, Portland, OR, Walker Art Center, Minneapolis, MN, The Zabludowicz Collection, London, United Kingdom.

Admission to the lecture is free.
