<Title>UMBC Remembers 9/11</Title>

    <span><span>This Saturday will mark the twentieth anniversary of the terrorist attacks that killed nearly 3,000 people on September 11, 2001. The UMBC community is invited to attend the following events this week for reflection and to honor the victims, their families, our veterans, medical personnel, and all those–human and canine–that supported rescue and recovery efforts in New York, Washington, D.C., and Pennsylvania.</span></span><div><span><br></span></div>

    <p><span>UMBC will hold a flag ceremony in remembrance of those killed on September 11, 2001. On that day at 8:46 a.m. the first group of hijackers deliberately crashed American Airlines Flight 11 into floors 93 through 99 of the World Trade Center’s North Tower. There will be a moment of silence at 8:46 a.m, and remarks by Nancy Young, vice president for student affairs; Candace Dodson-Reed, chief of staff and executive director, Office of Equity and Inclusion; and a member of the Department of Emergency Health Services. Also in attendance will be members of the Arbutus and Halethorpe Fire Departments, and Navy ROTC.</span><span></span></p>

<Title>Student Conduct and Community Standards Fall 2021 Operations</Title>

    <p>For Fall 2021, we are pleased to be serving you 
    from our new facility, The Center for Well-Being. We are located in Room
     119, in the back left corner of the first floor, if you enter from the 
    main doors. Our hours of operation are 8:30 a.m. – 5 p.m. To decrease 
    staff density and mitigate COVID transmission, about 50% of the staff 
    will be teleworking each weekday and 50% on-site. Thank you for your 
    patience as we work to fill staff vacancies.</p>
    <ul><li>Pre-Hearings and Hearings will proceed as 
    scheduled, using WebEx meetings as an alternative to in-person meetings.
     Student Conduct and Community Standards will initiate the WebEx 
    meetings via links in the UMBC Google calendaring software.</li></ul>
    <ul>
    <li>Appeals will proceed as scheduled, using WebEx meetings as an alternative to in-person meetings.</li>
    <li>Parking Services is resolving student parking appeals administratively during the Fall 2021 semester.</li>
    <li>Student- or staff-initiated meetings can continue via WebEx.</li>
    <li>Background checks by external stakeholders can be submitted to <a href="mailto:conduct@umbc.edu" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">conduct@umbc.edu</a>
     with a copy of a signed consent form and a copy of the investigators 
    credentials. Responses to both “negative” and “positive” disciplinary 
    record checks can be expected within one business day and follow-up 
    inquiries by investigators will be conducted by phone. Internal 
    stakeholders (university officials with a legitimate need-to-know) can 
    submit background check requests to <a href="mailto:conduct@umbc.edu" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">conduct@umbc.edu</a> and expect a response within one business day.</li>
    <li>Admission with prior discipline interviews will be scheduled through <a href="mailto:conduct@umbc.edu" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">conduct@umbc.edu</a> and conducted via telephone.</li>
    <li>
    <a href="https://conduct.umbc.edu/resources/petition-to-expunge-records/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Expungement requests</a> can continue to be filed and will be addressed in due course</li>
    <li>The Student Conduct and Community Standards website will be updated 
    with the latest information regarding service levels and business

    <div class="html-content"><span><p><span>University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) has partnered with 3rd Millennium, whose mission is to help students address critical life skills such as alcohol abuse prevention, drug abuse prevention, relationship violence prevention and sexual assault prevention, in high schools and higher education institutions across the country.</span></p>
    <p><span>As part of our comprehensive prevention program for <strong>new incoming first year and/or transfer undergraduate and graduate students, </strong></span><span>UMBC requires that new, undergraduate students complete Alcohol-Wise and Other Drugs and new, graduate students complete Other Drugs.</span><span> These online courses will empower you to make healthy, well-informed decisions about issues that affect your college years and beyond.</span></p>
    <p><span>Important:</span><span> For each of the courses: </span></p>
    <ul>
    <li>
    <span>Part 1 is due </span><span>August 13, 2021</span><span> and</span>
    </li>
    <li>Part 2 is due <span>October 22, 2021 [Alcohol-Wise ONLY]</span>
    </li>
    </ul>
