Motivational Monday TEDx of the Week

<Tagline>Why being respectful to your coworkers is good for business.</Tagline>

Looking for a dose of inspiration to start your week? No need to look any further. Each week, we curate talks on topics that matter NOW for all of us related to resilience, self-care, dealing with uncertain times, as well as ways to stay connected, inspired, and grounded when the earth beneath us is shifting.

Today's talk is Why being respectful to your coworkers is good for business by Christine Porath. Looking to get ahead in your career? Start by being respectful to your coworkers, says leadership researcher Christine Porath. In this science-backed talk, she shares surprising insights about the costs of rudeness and shows how little acts of respect can boost your professional success -- and your company's bottom line.

After you watch, we invite you to reflect on the following:

What resonated for you in the video?

What lived experiences do you have, either personally or professionally that align with the core message of the talk?

As you think of your role as a student, employee, or manager what feels relevant and useful to remember?

What are you taking away that feels meaningful - either a new perspective, a potential action, etc.

How might we take better care of ourselves and each other during this time?

If you're a supervisor, consider using this talk for team building purposes! You might send the video ahead of your meeting with several reflection questions on which you'd like your staff to come prepared to speak.

An Invitation to Return...

There was a time in human history when each of us was alive and awake to both the beauty and the wisdom of the natural world. A time of awareness where we intuited that what was happening 'outside' was also happening 'inside' each of us. A time when nature was our teacher. The following practices invite you to return and rekindle this inner knowing for the sake of your own well-being, for the sake of our planet and for future generations to come who will inhabit it.

Principles of Mindfulness

Awareness - Paying attention to our attention - how and what we notice

Non-judgement - Our ability to accept experiences as they are without

evaluation or judgment

Peacefulness - Our ability to cultivate a state of peacefulness and equanimity

amidst changing conditions

Pay attention to these principles as you go through each exercise, bringing with you a sense of wakefulness, appreciation, and wonder to each experience.

Tips and Tricks for Raised Bed Gardening

If you are interested in raised bed gardening, here are a few tips to get you started:

1. Don't step on the soil

It's important to make sure that the soil doesn't get compacted in your raised garden bed. Non-compacted soil allows plants to grow stronger, deeper roots. One way to prevent compacted soil is to make sure that you don't stand directly in the garden bed, while weeding or doing other garden maintenance.

2. Prevent weeds and grass from growing around the raised garden bed

There are a few different methods to prevent weeds and grass from growing around paths and walkways. One of my preferred methods is to put down a layer of cardboard on the path or walkway, and then cover it with a layer of mulch. This prevents weeds and grass from growing, while also making the garden pathways look more tidy.

3. Remember to mulch your raised beds

One way to keep weeds from overwhelming your garden plot is to mulch your raised beds. Mulching is important, because it helps to regulate the temperature of the soil, and it also helps the soil to retain moisture during summer months. Furthermore, mulching will save you time and energy, because you won't have to spend as much time weeding your garden plot. Mid to late spring is generally the best time to mulch, although mulching later in the season can also be beneficial.

4. Water your raised garden bed daily (or as needed)

Because the raised garden bed sits above ground level, you should regularly check on the soil, and make sure that it hasn't completely dried out. In very hot regions, you may need to water the garden bed daily (especially during the summer months). However, if you live in a cooler climate (or if rain is in the forecast) then you may be able to skip watering for a day or two. Ideally, you should water your garden bed in the early morning or in the evening.

5. Make sure your soil has enough nutrients

The soil of a raised garden bed gets depleted of nutrients after each growing season. A great way to replenish the nutrients in the soil is to spread a layer of compost over the entire garden bed, at the beginning of the growing season. 1-2 inches of compost should be sufficient for a raised garden bed that already has a fair amount of nutrients in it. However, more compost may be needed for a garden bed that has been completely depleted of nutrients.

These tips are just general guidelines. For a more in-depth look at raised bed gardening, here are a couple of helpful online resources:

Motivational TEDx of the Week

<Tagline>"The unforeseen consequences of a fast-paced world.”</Tagline>

Looking for a dose of inspiration to start your week? No need to look any further. Each week, we curate talks on topics that matter NOW for all of us related to resilience, self-care, dealing with uncertain times, as well as ways to stay connected, inspired, and grounded when the earth beneath us is shifting.

Today's talk is The unforeseen consequences of a fast-paced world by Kathryn Bouskill. Why does modern technology promise efficiency, but leave us constantly feeling pressed for time? Anthropologist Kathryn Bouskill explores the paradoxes of living in a fast-paced society and explains why we need to reconsider the importance of slowing down in a world that demands go, go, go.

Nature as Teacher

<Tagline>Nature Based Mindful Practice</Tagline>

19. Earth Teach Me Meditation

Before heading out for a nature exploration, first spend some time setting your intention. Begin by taking some long deep breaths, in through the nose and out through the nose, feeling your belly expand on the inhalation and contract on the exhalation. Allow your breath to resume to normal.

Instead of using your breath as an anchor for attention, this time, you will use a question. Turn inward and silently ask yourself: "What do I need to know most now, in my life?" Allow what arises to arise (e.g., flexibility, understanding, service, connection, etc.) without censorship. Continue to ask the question for the next five minutes, paying attention to any themes that emerge. At the end of your sit, identify a theme that you would like to explore on your walk. As you venture out, hold this intention present, and let nature be your guide. "Earth teach me __________." Pay attention to what shows up and record your insights at the conclusion.
