September is National Recovery Month

<Tagline>Recovery is possible for everyone!</Tagline>

September is National Recovery Month. The purpose of this month is to "promote and support new evidence-based treatment and recovery practices, the nation's strong and proud recovery community, and the dedication of service providers and communities who make recovery in all its forms possible."

Having a mental health or substance use disorder can be incredibly isolating despite how common these concerns are. Support for recovery is crucial, and you can find that support at UMBC. So often, we consume the harrowing tales of addiction, but rarely do we hear the stories of recovery. A study published in 2020 by the CDC and the National Institute on Drug Abuse found that "3 out of 4 people who experience addiction are in recovery." Mental health and substance use disorders are treatable. Having worked in the recovery field, I have witnessed the positive reality of recovery. I have also witnessed that seeking and accepting help can be hard. UMBC students are incredibly intelligent and tough and typically try to solve their own problems independently. A person in recovery needs community support, and there are many ways to access this. By embracing recovery, one can improve mental and physical health and form stronger relationships with friends, family, and classmates. Recovery is possible. Help is available. RIH celebrates that hope and honors Recovery Month. We urge all community members to join this celebration by reducing the stigma of mental health or substance use disorders and approaching someone considering or active in recovery with acceptance, support, and inclusion.

If you or someone you know is struggling with a mental health or substance use disorder, know that free and confidential help is available 24 hours a day through SAMHSA's National Helpline, 1-800-662-HELP (4357). RIH providers are also happy to support you with this concern. You can make an appointment by calling 410-455-2542 during business hours.

Change happens all the time, whether we choose it, or it chooses us. Changes in leadership, priorities, structures and processes, like those that we have seen at UMBC, can be challenging, each initiating a transition that requires us to look beneath processes to understand the human side of change. In the end, it's our people who will make change happen and we need the right combination of knowledge, skills, and strategies, as well as a common language to understand, cope with, and adapt to change.

September is Suicide Prevention Month

September is Suicide Prevention Month and at Retriever Integrated Health, we are observing this month of awareness by sharing resources UMBC community members can utilize for themselves or others if suicide is a concern.

Did you know that:

In 2021, suicide was responsible for 48,183 deaths. That's about one death by suicide every 11 minutes, or approximately 132 every day.

Suicide is the second-leading cause of death for teens and young adults aged 10-34.

94% of adults in the United States think suicide can be prevented.

Sometimes the challenge lies in knowing how to prevent suicide, and in the inherent discomfort and fear in the word suicide. Many people believe that directly talking about suicide increases the likelihood of a person attempting suicide, but the opposite is actually true. Talking about suicide with a trusted person greatly decreases a person's likelihood of attempting suicide. For UMBC community members who need support in increasing their comfort and confidence in talking about suicide, RIH offers Question, Persuade, Refer, a one-hour-long skills-based workshop that provides practical tools for use with folx in suicidal crisis. Visit the RIH myUMBC page to learn more and to sign up for a session of QPR being offered this fall.

Having thoughts of suicide is more common than you may think. In 2021, 12.3 million people seriously thought about suicide and 3.5 million made a plan for suicide. If you are having thoughts of suicide, you are not alone and you do not have to figure out how to manage your feelings alone. At UMBC, there are many options for support:

988, the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, is available by call or text 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and will connect you with a trained local mental health professional.

Togetherall, an online peer support community, connects you with other college students who may be going through the same things as you.

Urgent Mental Health Care visits at Retriever Integrated Health, allow you to see a counselor when you are in distress, Monday-Friday 8:30am-5pm at the Center for Well-Being.

ISP is a self-screening tool that connects you anonymously with an RIH counselor for consultation. You can access this and other online tools on our website.

By seeking help when you are struggling and knowing how to support peers when they are struggling, you can be a part of suicide prevention at UMBC.

Is Group Counseling Right for Me? Yes!

<Tagline>A message from RIH's Groups Coordinator, Lauren Mirzakhalili</Tagline>

When I started college, no academic task filled me with dread more than the group project. Working with others is uncomfortable and brings up questions such as "Will I have to do everything?" or, on the other extreme, "Will I not bring enough to the table?"

Despite the dread that may come when a professor announces that there will be a group project, group work is necessary for higher education and everything that comes after. An African proverb says, "If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together." (For the record, I don't love attributing a proverb to an entire continent, but it seems like many people more knowledgeable than me have not been able to trace its origins: https://www.npr.org/sections/goatsandsoda/2016/07/30/487925796/it-takes-a-village-to-determine-the-origins-of-an-african-proverb.)

As an undergraduate, imagining my future life, I pictured a solitary existence and did not imagine much work with others. My imagination was far from the reality of my life as a therapist. I need a lot from other people. I need to work closely with my colleagues to consult about my therapy techniques and whether they are the best for the students I am working with. I depend on the researchers who verify that our field's practices are evidence-based and genuinely work. I depend on our team at RIH, who can treat and support different elements of the student experience. I think you're getting the gist. Life, for better or worse, is a group project.

The learning and growing that best prepares us for the rest of our lives can happen in groups. Otherwise, we would not be assigned these group projects year after year. This applies to therapy as well. Often, the concerns that people come to talk about in therapy are related to the "interpersonal" (i.e., our relationships with others). Difficulties making friends, keeping friends, trusting others, and trusting ourselves with others, are all very human and interpersonal concerns. Getting to explore these concerns as they are happening within the boundaries of ethical group therapy practices can be a powerful group project, but it's one that you get to choose for yourself.

At RIH we offer a wide variety of group counseling. We have skills-based groups such as Skills Training in the Application of Interpersonal Regulation (STAIR), which I often explain to students as an excellent entry into group therapy and, at times, might feel more like a class. You will learn concrete skills to understand and regulate emotions, become more mindful, and approach relationships in new ways. We also have more open-ended process groups, such as Reflecting Retrievers. In this type of group, you can explore how you show up for yourself and others and try out different ways of approaching relationships. There is something for everyone within our group program. If you are interested in joining a group, please call our main line (410-455-2542) to request an initial consultation appointment.

RePost: Fall 2023 Public Health and COVID-19 Update

Dear UMBC Community,

As we enter the fall 2023 semester, UMBC's leadership continues to be committed to the health and well-being of all in our community. We are monitoring the rates of respiratory virus in our community, and are attentive to both COVID-19 rates and influenza, among others. UMBC's health experts routinely engage with county, state, and federal resources to understand trends and current health conditions.

As a key part of protecting the health of all on campus, we ask that each of you monitor your health and be careful to avoid exposing others if you have cold or flu symptoms. Consult your healthcare provider or Retriever Integrated Health if you need testing or care. To reduce the spread of infectious diseases on campus, cover your cough, wear a mask, and wash your hands. Minimizing your exposure to others while sick is particularly important as we all strive to protect health-compromised and other vulnerable members of our community. You can minimize exposure to others when sick by staying home if you are a faculty, staff, or student who is commuting to campus or following any related guidelines if you are a student living in residence.

In addition, we ask that you continue to Keep Masks in Mind. The university will provide high- quality KN95 masks to those in need. Masks will be available at the RAC, the Library, and The Commons Information Center. If your professor, colleague, or other community member requests that you wear a mask in a classroom, meeting, or other situation, we ask that you respect their wishes and needs.

Finally, remember that vaccination is one of the most effective ways to prevent severe illness. Retriever Integrated Health will be offering both COVID-19 and influenza vaccination clinics throughout the fall. We will share dates and additional information with the community soon.

Amid the busyness that the semester can bring, please remember to take care of yourself and prioritize your health and well-being. Thank you for your support of one another and our community as we all work together to stay as healthy as possible.
