<Title>REPOST: 504 &amp; Beyond with Sami Schalk</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><div><span><em><strong>504 and Beyond: Disability Politics and the Black Panther Party</strong></em></span></div><div><div><div><br></div><div><strong>Sami Schalk</strong>, Associate Professor, Gender and Women’s Studies, University of Wisconsin-Madison</div><div><br></div><div>Drawing from the book, <em>Black Disability Politics</em>, this talk will detail the Black Panther Party’s involvement in the 1977 504 Sit-in, in which protesters around the country picketed and occupied government offices to urge passage of delayed regulations related to Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973. Schalk will discuss the sit-in as an historical example of how Black cultural workers have engaged with disability as a political issue in ways that have sometimes been obscured in Black studies and disability studies alike.<br></div><div><br></div><div><strong>Biography:</strong> <strong>Dr. Sami Schalk</strong> (she/her) is an associate professor of Gender &amp; Women’s Studies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She is the author of <em>Bodyminds Reimagined: (Dis)ability, Race and Gender in Black Women’s Speculative Fiction</em> (Duke 2018) and <em>Black Disability Politics</em> (Duke 2022). Dr. Schalk’s academic work focuses on race, disability, and gender in contemporary American literature and culture. She also writes for mainstream outlets, including a monthly column called “Pleasure Practices” in <em>TONE Madison</em>. <Title>Spring 2023 Multicultural Leadership Experience (MLE)</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><p><span><u>The deadline to apply for the Spring 2023 MLE Cohort has been extended to Wednesday, February 8th, 2023 and will close at 11:59pm. </u></span></p><p><span><br></span></p><p><span>The Multicultural Leadership Experience (MLE) is a collaboration between Campus Life and Initiatives for Identity Inclusion &amp; Belonging (i3B), that seeks to: </span></p><p><span>Engage participants in a multicultural development and leadership learning program; <br>Enhance participants' understanding of their social identities, leader identity, as well as their capacity to lead; <br>And enable participants' development through authenticity, self-awareness, relationships, and capitalizing on difference. </span><span></span></p><p><span><br><br></span></p><p><span>The sessions are as follows:</span></p><p><span> </span></p><p><span>- Monday, February 13th, 3 - 4:30pm </span></p><p><span>- Monday, February 27th, 3 - 4:30pm </span></p><p><span>- Monday, March 13th, 3 - 4:30pm </span></p><p><span>- Monday, April 17th, 3 - 4:30pm </span></p><p><span>- Monday, May 15th, 3 - 5:00pm </span></p><p><span> </span></p><p><span>***All sessions will take place in The Commons 2B23 | The Mosaic: Center for Cultural Diversity***<br> </span></p><p><span>Participants will be exploring the concept of Authentic Leadership, Legacy Building, and Breaking Barriers of White Supremacy within Leadership. We will do this in a leadership learning cohort by: </span></p><ul><li><span>Enhancing participants' leader identity and leadership capacity using an identity-conscious lens and student development theories;</span></li><li><span>Increasing participants' awareness of their personal abilities, identity development, and intersections that shape their story through authenticity, self-reflection, and cultural humility;</span></li><li><span>Exploring the role they play in developing relationships while building intra/intercultural connections; </span></li><li><span>And capitalizing on their differences, specifically in relation to their racial, ethnic, national, and other salient identity social groups. </span></li></ul><p><span> </span></p><p><span>The purpose of all MLE programs is to provide a space for students and student leaders who identify within diverse or marginalized backgrounds to discover their own capacity to lead, while also promoting a better understanding of their experiences, issues, strengths, and outcomes in navigating their own collegiate careers.     <div class="html-content"><p>"How to Be a Better Ally", is a co-facilitated workshop series that focuses on various underrepresented and/or marginalized populations. The series aims to provide UMBC community members with the basic practices for allyship, specifically for the highlighted population.</p><p> </p><p>For the Spring 2023 semester, the "How to Be a Better Ally" series has now expanded to include the following programs. These programs serve as a foundation for allyship under the intersectional identity areas. <strong>"How to Be a Better Ally"</strong> as a stand-alone program is a workshop to further participants' understanding of the targeted population. This discussion-based program follows the Women’s Center </span><a href="https://umbc.box.com/bravespaces" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Brave Space</a><span> model to provide a welcoming environment and thoughtful community to engage in conversations focused on support and healing for survivors of sexual violence. </span><strong>This group centers the experiences of survivors and their allies, but all are welcome!</strong><div><strong><br></strong></div><div>This semester, we are doing something a bit different... If you are interested in attending biweekly discussion group meetings (i.e. every other week), please sign-up below. </div><div><u><strong><br></strong></u></div><div><u><strong>We will move forward with discussion groups only if we have at least 5 people sign up. Our myUMBC will be updated to reflect either the addition of meetings or a notice that WBY is on </strong><strong>hiatus</strong><strong>. UPDATE: We have received a lot of interest so rest assured we will be hosting We Believe You for the spring semester! Check out our events for the full calendar.</strong></u></div><div><br></div><div><strong><u>The deadline to sign up for WBY (Part 1) will be Thursday, February 9th!</u></strong></div><div><br></div><div>Please note: you are free to attend/not attend the group whenever you'd like.     <div class="html-content"><p>Welcome Back Retrievers!</p><p> </p><p><strong>Please join us for the i3b welcome back Game Night on Wednesday, February 1st from 5:00-7:00pm in the SportsZone in the Commons. Come for games, snacks, and to learn about our work on campus!</strong></p><p> </p><p>Also, we are excited to welcome you all back to campus and to i3b's identity-based spaces across campus: The Mosaic Center for Cultural Diversity, The Pride Center, and The Gathering Space for Spiritual Well-Being.     <div class="html-content"><strong>What Is Interact?</strong><div><strong><br></strong></div><div><div>INTERACT is a 5-week dialogue program for UMBC students. </div><div><br></div><div>Participants meet weekly in small groups for 1.5 hour sessions that are co-facilitated by 2-3 facilitators. Each small group will consist of 10-15 participants. During these sessions, participants learn and practice the necessary skills to become <strong>INCLUSIVE LEADERS</strong> and <strong>ENGAGED COMMUNITY MEMBERS</strong>.</div></div><div><br></div><div>There are groups for commuters, first year students, students interested in religion + belief and more! <Title>Women's Center Lactation Room - Spring Reservations</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><span>Moms and parents who plan on using the Women's Center lactation room, now officially named the Maxine Tracy Wellness Room, throughout the winter and spring semester are encouraged to sign up for their preferred reservation times. We are accepting reservations now. </span><div><br></div><div>To reserve your time, email <a href="mailto:womenscenter@umbc.edu" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">womenscenter@umbc.edu</a> for access to our online reservation form. You can also stop by the Women's Center during our hours of operation to complete the form in person. All parents who reserve times will be added to the lactation room google calendar and a group email list in order to support communication and best navigate multiple people using the space. <br><div><br></div><div>While the Women's Center works diligently with parents to ensure access to the lactation room, we're also pleased to partner with the Library which now also hosts a lactation room. <a href="https://library.umbc.edu/studyspaces.php" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">AOK Library has a lactation room available on the 7th floor. </a>The room includes a table, two chairs, an outlet and power strip, and sanitizing wipes.. It may be reserved for up to one hour, up to 7 days in advance. A key is also available on a first-come, first-served basis at the Check Out Desk on the Library's first floor. Reserve the Lactation Room for periods up to 1 hour.<div><br></div><div>We also have an additional lactation room available on the ground floor of the RAC (room 073). This room has a sink and chair. This room is first-come-first-serve. The Women’s Center oversees the operation of this room.
