Article: Solving Ventilator Shortage With Breast Pumps

Thanks to Jill B for sharing this article knowing there may be some no-longer-needed breast pumps out there that can possibly be re-purposed. This group of researcher are currently only accepting Spectra pumps

Here's link to article which I'm also pasting below:

LEXINGTON PARK, Md. — There are a lot of moms that still have them sitting around. Maybe stuffed in a drawer, maybe in a random bedroom closet, or maybe just tucked away with the rest of that old diaper bag you used before your baby grew up. Of course, we are talking about those old breast pumps that sit around collecting dust after you no longer need them.

But this team of engineers from Southern Maryland hopes they found a new use for those pumps. In the midst of a global health pandemic caused by the novel coronavirus(COVID-19), their ingenuity could potentially save thousands of lives that will be impacted by a shortage of ventilators across the country.

Brandi and Grant Gerstner, Alex Scott and Rachel LaBatt comprise the team of four engineers that have been working to repurpose traditional breast pumps. Their vision consists of reversing the suction that is created by the pumps, turning them into an “intermittent positive pressure ventilation” device that safely replicates the job of a ventilator.

Pictured Above: Alex Scott, Brandi Gerstner, and Rachel Labatt.

“[A breast pump] does pulsing intervals. It is a sanitize-able biomedical device that's approved by the [Food and Drug Administration(FDA)]. You know they're reliable, they’ve been used by moms everywhere for decades. What if I could reverse it?” Brandi Gerstner said, explaining how she got the idea. “What if I could make it blow rather than suck? And so I grabbed my old one from the basement, grabbed a screwdriver and an X-Acto knife… Sure enough, you can turn it around very, very easily.”

While it might sound relatively simple, and the team says they can build one from scratch in about four hours now, there are still several features that the group has added to the devices that could potentially make this a game-changer for the global ventilator shortage.

“Safety is our first and foremost,” Gerstner said. “We put safety valves and backflow filters in to make sure that we're not letting the virus get back into the compressor. We put in an electronic safety release, in case we exceed the medically safe pressure because I know that [coronavirus] patients occasionally have backpressure or some other anomaly… We are not going to put this on anybody unless we know that it’s safe.”

The Associated Press reported in mid-March that while the Society of Critical Care Medicine estimated that there are currently 200,000 ventilators available in the United States, over 960,000 coronavirus patients could eventually need a ventilator. While it is hard to predict how many cases will be seen across the country, the Gerstner family and their team want to help bridge the currently anticipated gap.

The group can currently build prototypes at a fraction of the cost of a traditional ventilator. A traditional device Gerstner says can run on the low-end around $5,000 and upwards of $50,000, but their prototypes are being constructed for roughly $500.

“There are going to be patients who require those incredibly sophisticated ICU ventilators,” Gerstner explained. “Currently, there’s over a six-week backlog on the emergency disposable ventilators, but traditional ventilators are on much larger backlogs… The goal for this is to help meet the shortage for the majority of patients, to free up some of those highly sophisticated ventilators for those who need them.”

While they are anticipating that costs will increase slightly with “additional safety measures” put in after going through the medical review process, Gerstner said she believes this will be a cost-effective way to take on the ventilator shortage from another angle of attack.

“The beauty of looking at breast pumps as a potential solution is, it's a thing that is available for free in a lot of mom's basements and closets,” Gerstner said. “It's also a thing that is not part of the traditional ventilator supply line, so it's [using] different manufacturers that aren't already tapped. We can access a whole different set of manufacturers without impeding any of the already ongoing ventilator production work.”

The team has self-described their solution as “rapidly deployable”, but they still have a few hoops to get through before anyone finds a breast pump ventilator next to a hospital bed.

Next on their agenda, the team is looking to get into a biomedical simulation laboratory, with a review from a pulmonologist. While several members of the medical community have already reviewed their design, the pulmonologist review and “robust biomedical simulation laboratory data” is still needed before they can reach approval from the FDA.

Recently, the FDA opened a design portal for “emergency situation medical device approval pathways”, which acknowledges the need to put medical devices in place faster than what is typically deemed conventional. However, the team still needs the previously mentioned biomedical data before they could be rapidly approved.

“Everything is open. There's no intellectual property restraint on this,” Gerstner said. “I'm very hopeful that we can find the right collaborators in the biomedical community to get this design validated and replicated as quickly as possible… Our ‘good’ would look like rapidly getting into a high-quality biomedical simulation lab, and getting into a hospital.”

Though they haven’t been working on this project for too long, the group has already seen mounting support from the Southern Maryland community. Specifically, the Gerstner led team asked to thank the moms in the community that donated old pumps, as well as their donation coordinator, Stacy Seigel. But their journey is not nearly over.

“If we make something that safe, that can help, then that would be a win, right?” Gerstner said. “I think a lot of people are chasing this perfect solution. And then the Navy's always got a mentality of ‘don't let perfect be the enemy of good enough’.”

The team is still accepting donations of old and new breast pumps, along with financial contributions and Arduino donations, to continue making prototypes. To find out how you can contribute, or potentially help get the device into a biomedical simulation lab, contact them at breastpumpvent@gmail.com

Virtual Sexual Assault Awareness Month: Affirmative Consent (Week 1) Round-Up

In the absence of physical space to learn, create, and come together, the Women’s Center is taking Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM) 2020 online. Each week during April, we will focus on a specific topic/theme as it relates to sexual violence awareness and prevention (see image below). Together, via out social media platforms like Facebook,Twitter, and Instagram, we can watch videos, read articles, and engage in other content for learning and skill-building.

UMBC’s Sexual Assault Awareness Month online calendar includes weekly themes to help explore important concepts related to sexual violence awareness and prevention.

But, we get it… Maybe you’re not on Facebook. Maybe you needed to take a break from social media for the day because you’re practicing self-care. Or maybe, you’re still following us on all the things and still missed a pretty cool post. That’s okay! In addition to posting on social media throughout the month, at the end of each week, we’ll provide a round-up of all the content we shared along with some action items to consider doing.

We just wrapped up week one of SAAM and spent the last several days exploring affirmative consent through the following content:

“What is affirmative consent?”” brought to you by Retriever Courage and UMBC’s Policy on Prohibited Sexual Misconduct, Interpersonal Violence, and Other Related Misconduct.

Image is part of the Retriever Courage poster campaign. This poster focuses on what consent is and includes a list of what consent is and isn’t.

Affirmative consent is all about saying or confirming an enthusiastic yes because YOU WANT TO… not because you feel like you have to say yes. And, being able to say yes means learning how to say no. We can learn how to create boundaries and say “no” way before we are even thinking about consent in terms of sex and it starts with educating little kids. Everyday Feminism has a great graphic to illustrate this point.

Image Reads: Children are told that adults are owed their attention and affection. When that idea is internalized it can be difficult to accept that no one is owed physical contact or emotional safety.

Knowing what you want and don’t want is a key part of being able to participate in affirmative consent. Reviewing and completing a sexual inventory can be a great way for you to identify what you want and don’t want as a first step in being able to communicate your needs. Check out this Yes, No, Maybe list from Scarleteen.

In this time of distance learning, Zoom meetings, and FaceTime as some of our only means of socially connecting with classmates, co-workers, family and friends, it’s even more important to be thinking about digital consent and practicing clear communication. Learn more here.

Important Take-Away:

→ Affirmative consent is not just about the presence of a no… it is the presence of an enthusiastic yes!

→ Remember FRIES.… consent is: Freely given, Reversible, Informed, Enthusiastic and Specific.

Now that you’ve got some good readings in your tool kit, what will you do with them? Here’s some Action Items:

Incorporate at least one way you can ask or give consent into your daily life, whether that’s asking to hug someone if you haven’t asked in the past, talking to your friends about tagging you on social media only after they’ve asked you, or offering an alternative way for a young person in your life to show gratitude that isn’t connected to physical touch or affection.

Share one of the articles above on your social media platforms. Ask your friends or family member if they’d be willing to engage in a conversation with you about one of the takeaways that stood out to you.

Like tea? Then here’s one more video on consent you can watch and share!

Submit your art + writing to a zine by and for survivors

<Tagline>Survivors to the Front: A Call to Witness</Tagline>

Survivors to the Front is a zine that commemorates Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM) and provides our UMBC community members--especially survivors and victims of sexual and/or power-based violence--a way to grab the megaphone. Albeit, voices will be heard through a zine in a much different way, we are committed to building the platform by which survivor testimony can be amplified throughout our campus community.

We are accepting submissions from all different mediums, including, but not limited to poetry, prose, art, and photography! You don't need to be an artist or a writer to submit: you just need to have a story. Think about this zine as a way to step up to the Survivor Speak-Out microphone and say your peace.

The deadline to submit will be Wednesday, April 15.

The finished product (set to debut around April 24th) will be posted on social media and available for digital download. Print copies will be made available when campus reopens.

Thank you for your participation in this project. Although we will still miss all of the greatness and power that Take Back the Night and other SAAM programs bring to our campus, we know that stories still need to be shared and voices heard. Just so, we hope that you can submit your work to be celebrated, acknowledged, and felt by the UMBC community.

Add to UMBC's Virtual Clothesline Project

<Tagline>Create a design and submit it to the Women's Center</Tagline>

Remote or not, Sexual Assault Awareness Month marches forward! Just so, the Women's Center is creating a Virtual Clothesline Project.

Survivors looking to participate can digitally design a clothesline project t-shirt and submit it to the Women’s Center by direct messaging us via Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, or emailing your image to us at womencenter@umbc.edu. You can use Canva, Spark, photography, Powerpoint, anything! There are design examples attached to this myUMBC post below.

We will be gathering submissions throughout the month and eventually culminating in a Clothesline Project story on IG and FB, and features in the SAAM zine project, "Survivors to the Front: A Call to Witness."*

For those interested in participating and submitting a design:

In your design, please do not include your name or any other identifying information in your design. If your contribution details your story, and you would like to go no further in the reporting process, we encourage you not to disclose any names or other specific identifying information, such as locations or familial relationships, as those details may prompt staff to follow up with you for reporting matters. This is particularly important for incidents related to childhood sexual abuse.

The Clothesline Project intends to make visible the direct impact of sexual violence on survivors and victims. In doing so, we ask that only those who self-identify as survivors/victims of sexual and/or power-based violence (including those impacted by secondary trauma) create and submit designs.

More about the Clothesline Project:

The Clothesline Project is a community-based public art display in which survivors and victims of sexual and power-based violence design and create shirts that illustrate their stories. In the public display, each decorated shirt is hung shoulder to shoulder so that viewers bear witness to the impact of sexual violence in our campus community. View this blogpost from 2018 to learn more.

UMBC's 2020 Virtual Sexual Assault Awareness Month

<Tagline>We see you. We believe you. You matter.</Tagline>

Sexual Assault Awareness Month brings people together to create and generate discussion and skill-building on how to prevent sexual violence in our schools, workplaces, and communities. While providing support and care to survivors of sexual violence is an everyday action, this awareness month also carves out intentional moments to honor and believe survivors’ stories and experiences. As we all do our part to flatten the curve during this public health crisis, we won’t be able to physically come together this April to do this critical work. The Women’s Center and all of our campus partners including the Office of Equity and Inclusion, University Health Services, the Counseling Center, Green Dot, We Believe You, and Retriever Courage, and more will nonetheless continue to promote awareness and prevention this month.

We are inviting our UMBC community to join our efforts.

Get Involved:

Learn - Each week during April, the Women’s Center will be focusing on various topics and issues related to sexual violence awareness and prevention (see attached flyer). Follow us on social media (Facebook,Twitter, and Instagram) to watch videos, read articles, and engage in other content for learning and skill-building.

Create - We are redesigning the Clothesline Project and parts of Take Back the Night for a virtual setting that honors survivors’ stories and creates space for community members to hold and validate these stories. Survivors of sexual violence/power-based violence are invited to share their stories so others in our community may still bear witness. The Women’s Center will share these stories in a virtual Clothesline Project and zine project: “Survivors to the Front: A Call to Witness”.

The events, activism, discussions, support, and stories that stem from Sexual Assault Awareness Month are some of the Women’s Center’s most significant and special. As we make adjustments to our calendar and move programming online, we want students to know that it is okay to grieve Take Back the Night and our other annual traditions. We are alongside you in that grieving process, and we hope that in these extraordinary times, we can continue to act with extraordinary compassion and conscientiousness to prevent sexual violence at UMBC and beyond.

Mutual Aid: One for All and All for One

Nandi is a student staff member in the Women’s Center and a Junior English major.

Mutual aid, as a concept, is based in anarchism and the work of Petr Kropotkin. His work, “Mutual Aid: A Factor of Evolution”, is a foundational text for anarchists and other communist movements. But really, you don’t have to be an anarchist or a communist, or know anything about these ideologies to practice mutual aid because it’s an extremely simple concept.

Basically, the theory supposes that people (and other creatures) are FAR more inclined to taking care of each other than they are to individualism, no matter how much our capitalist ruling class argues to the contrary. The Seattle-based collective Big Door Brigade defines the practical application of mutual aid as “when people get together to meet each other’s basic survival needs with a shared understanding that the systems we live under are not going to meet our needs and we can do it together RIGHT NOW!” They also make the point that it is a separate and distinct practice from charity and charitable organizations.

Historically, mutual aid looks a lot of different ways. The Free African Society in 1787 was an organization meant to provide aid amongst free Black people. In the 20th century, there were Italian-American organizations called Societa di Mutuo Soccorso and Mexican-American societies called Sociedad Mutualistas. Larger worker movements and labor unions are also a part of this tradition as they necessitate collaboration and care work as a means to stay afloat while struggling for rights. Labor organizing in the US is at its lowest point in decades, but that doesn’t mean that we still can’t connect to our communities right now in the present to help everyone survive.

In feminist movements, mutual aid is a thread that runs throughout as an ongoing necessity among those who are oppressed under patriarchy. It’s not hard to see why; power-based violence, hiring discrimination, and wage gaps all team up to make people of oppressed genders dependent on one another rather than the institutions that their oppressors control.

Anarchist Feminist flag

The Association for Women’s Rights in Development has mutual aid as a key piece of their “Solidarity Economy”, an economy in which people’s relationship to goods and services is more sustainable and cooperative. To go along with that, anarchist feminism interprets the labeling of actions like sharing, compassion, and sensitivity as “feminine” to mean that these are direct challenges to the “masculine” hierarchy.

Maybe you’ve seen mutual aid mentioned on social media in the past few weeks, or maybe you haven’t. Right now, due to COVID-19, we’re all in a position to rely on one another for safety and survival. We usually think of networking as a means to further ourselves towards our own goals and ambitions. Now is a time to network with the people in our neighborhoods and communities for our common good. Practicing mutual aid doesn’t mean that everyone has to gather and social distancing has to go out the window because those are important things to do for our communities as well.

If in reaching out you find a need that you can fill, then do so! If someone in your network has access to resources that you can’t find, then make your own needs known! As capable and resourceful as we are, self-reliance is not the order of the day. Lean into your human inclinations towards care and comradeship to make it through.

Hundreds of mutual aid groups have popped up all over the country in the past month to address the dire straits we now find ourselves in, with most of them being led by the organizers who dedicate their lives to this work every day.

To find one near you, you can go to the interactive map on mutualaidhub.org, or this list posted on the Its Going Down digital community center. Its Going Down also has organizing guides and resources so that you don’t have to go into this unlearned. I’ve put in for the Baltimore Maroon Movement!
