UMBC presents Catherine Cabeen and Company for two performances on September 23 and 24 in Fine Arts Building Studio 317. A project based contemporary dance company that focuses on interdisciplinary collaborations, Catherine Cabeen and Company will present its repertory program Hyphen, which The New York Times called, "highly kinetic, complex movement...visually exquisite, and beautifully performed." Hyphen, choreographed by Catherine Cabeen, is a suite of five contemporary dance works that explore the shifting intersections between words, rhythm, meaning, movement, sound, and color through interdisciplinary collaboration. The work features original live music by UMBC alumnus Kane Mathis on kora and oud, and Julian Martlew on dobro. Performed by three dancers, Hyphen also features the work of writer Jay McAleer, costumes by fashion designers Michael Cepress and Bo Choi, and lighting by Connie Yun.

Cabeen was a member of the Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Dance Company from 1998 to 2005. She is also a former member of the Martha Graham Dance Company and Pearl Lang Dance Theater. Cabeen has performed as a guest artist with Donald Byrd's Spectrum Dance Theater, Moving People Dance Theater, Pig Iron Theater Company, and Collage Dance Theater. She also frequently performs with Richard Move's MoveOpolis!, and as a guest artist with various choreographers.

It has been a big week for UMBC’s social science faculty in the national media. A new feature in the Chronicle for Higher Education highlights UMBC’s Erickson School, noting its success with attracting students to careers in aging services through new and engaging multimedia and interdisciplinary courses. Dean Judah Ronch says the number of students enrolled in aging-related courses at UMBC has grown from 290 to 750 over the past two years. Program graduates have moved on to work in industries from consumer goods to travel and transportation, in addition to traditional sectors like senior housing and medical services.

Also this week, UMBC economic professor Dennis Coates offered his expertise in sports economics for a Washington City Paper story on diminished seating at FedEx Field. Don Norris, public policy department chair, reflected on redistricting in Maryland for the Washington Post, arguing that those managing the process have placed political self-interest ahead of fairness and civic values: “It’s not about good government. It’s not about democracy. It’s about control.”
