Manil Suri, Mathematics, in Newsweek

Manil Suri, professor of mathematics, reflects on returning to Mumbai, the Indian city of a million incarnations, in the July 17 issue of Newsweek magazine. Suri also teaches in the Asian studies program.

In his piece, he compared Mumbai to a Hindu goddess. “In some ways, Mumbai is called upon to be even more subsuming than other goddesses. Her population is enormously diverse and regularly at odds on the basis of religion, language, ethnicity, and a host of other schisms. Her visibility attracts benign and malignant elements from inside and outside the country. These factors can result in heinous acts of terror. Yet somehow, Mumbai always manages to recover, no matter how grievous her wounds,” he writes.

The full piece can be read here.

Spring 2012 Co-op with General Electric Appliances

<Tagline>Deadline to Apply: 9/15/11</Tagline>

GE employees worldwide are dedicated to turning imaginative ideas into leading products and services that help solve some of the world's toughest problems. As a co-op you will gain hands-on experience while working on challenging projects that contribute to the company's growth while learning from some of the brightest minds in the business.

GE is one of the largest manufacturers of major appliances in the world. Since 1907, we have been introducing advanced appliances to improve peoples' lives. We're continuing that legacy today with energy conserving innovations like the Advantium oven, the Harmony clothes care system, and more. GE set aggressive targets to improve the energy efficiency of Company operations and reduce the Company's greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Today, GE offers nearly 400 products from refrigerators to cooking appliances to dryers that meet ENERGY STAR standards. Our theory- less energy, less water, better results.

Our program offers students the opportunity to gain experience and develop skills by working directly on the engineering teams and are expected to be a major contributor to those teams. Our program is designed as a mentoring opportunity where you are aligned with an individual assignment leader who will help set your specific goals, deliverables and expectations throughout your rotation.

Students who excel in our co-op program are given the opportunity to interview for full time opportunities through a Leadership Development Program. This is a 2 year program committed to growing our entry level, high potential employees who possess a passion for engineering, technical excellence and business skills by accelerating their development through technical training, leadership training and rotational assignments within challenging new product introductions, product development and innovative cost take out projects.

Position Description:
Co-ops joining our team have opportunities to complete innovative technical assignments in a variety of product areas including refrigeration, washer systems and cooking products. Our co-ops get to work on some of the newest innovations that will impact our environment. "Ecomagination" is our company-wide commitment to imagine and build innovative solutions that benefit our consumers and society at large. Some of these Eco-friendly products that our co-ops have contributed to are the GE Profile Harmony laundry pair, which delivers energy and water savings using a HydroMotion wash. If every U.S. household owning a washer not qualified ENERGY STAR were to replace it with a GE Profile Harmony washer, we could save enough water each year to fill nearly 400,000 Olympic-sized swimming pools. Plus our new refrigerators with ClimateKeeper2 technology, which keeps food garden-fresh longer. Refrigerators with FrostGuard defrost 20 percent less than conventional units, keeping frozen foods at their best. The system, working independently, uses a dual evaporator system to provide the best environment for fresh and frozen food. The decrease in greenhouse gas emissions over the life of all the GE ENERGY STAR -qualified refrigerators that were sold in 2005 is equivalent to eliminating more than 71,000 cars from U.S. roads for an entire year. The benefits of this experience extend beyond the exciting work assignments and competitive wages. We value development and offer several training opportunities to enhance students' technical and professional development including, communication skills and resume writing. Our co-ops participate on committees of their peers that offer opportunities to network with the leaders of the company. The committees perform many community service activities such as mentoring/tutoring elementary students. The co-ops have many social events both in and out of work. These include lunches, weekend activities, sports, and cookouts.

Basic Qualifications:
* Currently pursuing a bachelor's degree in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering.
* Minimum of 3.0/4.0 GPA

To Apply:
1) Visit UMBCworks and search for Position ID: 9246455
2) Follow the additional instructions on UMBCworks to apply directly through the GE website
3) Apply before September 15
4) Visit GE Appliances at the Career Fair on October 5th!

10:00am Wednesday, 7 September 2011, ITE 234

During the quick advancements of medical image visualization and augmented virtual reality applications improvements in the performances of Volume Rendering Algorithms need significant attention. Real-time visualization of 3D image data set is one of the key tasks of Augmented Reality Systems required by many medical imaging applications. Over past five years the development of the Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) has proved beneficial when it comes to Real Time Volume Rendering. We propose a GPU based volume rendering system for medical images. Our toolkit independent system is able to read DICOM images, implementing better integration technics that increase frame rate for volume rendering with the same quality of output images.
