The Center for Art, Design and Visual Culture (CADVC) presents “Image Transfer: Pictures in a Remix Culture,” curated by Sara Krajewski and co-organized by Independent Curators International and the Henry Art Gallery, on display October 6-December 10.

“Image Transfer: Pictures in a Remix Culture” spotlights evolving attitudes toward the appropriation, recuperation and repurposing of extant photographic imagery. Artists, as both producers and consumers in today’s vast image economy, freely adopt and adapt materials from myriad sources. Images culled from the Internet, magazines, newspapers, advertisements, television, films, personal and public archives, studio walls and from other works of art are all fair game. “Image Transfer” brings together artists who divert commonplace, even ubiquitous, visual materials into new territories of formal and idiomatic expression.

Artists featured in the exhibition include Sean Dack, Karl Haendel, Jordan Kantor, Matt Keegan, Carter Mull, Lisa Oppenheim, Marlo Pascual, Amanda Ross-Ho, Sara VanDerBeek, Siebren Versteeg, Erika Vogt and Kelley Walker.

An opening reception will be held on Thursday, October 6, 5-7 p.m., and the exhibition will open for regular hours on Friday, October 7.

Admission to the exhibition is free. CADVC is open Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. and is located in the Fine Arts Building. For more information, call ext. 5-3188.

Have you ever wondered who is the face behind the system that matched you to your roommate? If you’re a current resident on campus, there’s a chance you have a roommate. Wendy Crowe, the Housing Assignment Coordinator, is the guru at ResLife who works to make sure you and your roommate are a good match. 

Crowe believes one of the most important aspects to keep in mind when assigning roommates is bedtime. “Bedtime seems to be the source of most of roommate conflicts,” she explains. Another important factor she keeps in mind when assigning roommates is the determined “social environment”, i.e. how often each roommatae plans to have company over. She also notices that students tend to use the comment box at the bottom of the housing application, so she also makes sure to keep that in mind.

One of the most difficult parts of roommate assignments is that “sometimes what is on the application doesn’t exactly match the actual person applying,” Crowe says. “Sometimes students should realize their roommate doesn’t have to be their best friend.  You can learn how to compromise. I enjoy working with the students... It’s really nice to see students who are excited.”

DO YOU THINK YOU AND YOUR ROOMMATE ARE A GOOD MATCH?  WHY OR WHY NOT?  WHAT IS THE BEST THING ABOUT HAVING A ROOMMATE?

Construction of new Patapsco addition began in fall of 2010. Students who were currently living in Patapsco and nearby Potomac would bear the brunt of waking up to construction as early at 7a.m. in the morning. It came to be worth it a year later as the new addition, which currently
houses over 180 residents, opened for the first time in August. Megan Drain ’14, a previous Potomac resident, describes her thoughts on the addition. “I thought it looked really pretty,” she says when she first saw the addition. She also enjoys “the size of the bathrooms and the new
furniture.”

Each floor of new Patapsco has its own study room and common room, which the older residence halls don’t include. Drain particularly likes this “because in the older residence halls there would only be one
common room... it would be difficult if there were people trying to socialize and other people trying to study at once... but now we have separate rooms for that now.” Even though Drain and other residents don’t enjoy always having to swipe to visit friends next door in Old Patapsco, she is very happy with her decision to live in New Patapsco.

The New Patapsco addition wasn’t the only recently developed project on campus. A brand new basketball court was added outside True Grit’s, next door to Harbor, Potomac and Patapsco halls. Nevin Thankachen ’14, a regular on the court, says it’s “definitely a positive addition to campus, and it gives people a stress outlet.” He also praises its “convenient location” and the fact that “you can walk right outside and play or you can just sit and watch”. Despite his protests that he
thinks “the lights turn off way too early”, he admits “nothing beats playing basketball in the fresh air”.
