In endowing this professorship, Roger C. Lipitz and the Lipitz Family Foundation sought “to recognize and support innovative and distinguished teaching and research in the Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County.” The Lipitz Professorship has previously been held by Carlo DiClemente (psychology), John Sturgeon (visual arts), Thomas Field (modern languages, linguistics and intercultural communication) and James Grubb (history). Dean John Jeffries of the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences writes, “Professor Morgan has achieved an extraordinary record as a scholar, teacher, and citizen of the university since joining the UMBC faculty in 1979.” One of the nation’s foremost scholars of aging, Morgan is author, co-author or editor of six books, 33 peer-reviewed articles and 16 book chapters, and she has won substantial research support from the National Institute on Aging. She has served on editorial boards of the top journals in her field and has provided important leadership to the Gerontological Society of America. As a result of her research achievements, Morgan has been named a fellow of the Gerontological Society of America and charter fellow of the Association for Gerontology in Higher Education (AGHE). She has also received the W. Fred Cottrell Award for Lifetime Achievement in Aging. The University of Pennsylvania Law School reports that Christopher DiPompeo ’04, economics, attained a highly-coveted clerkship in the U.S. Supreme Court for Chief Justice John G. Roberts, Jr. He started his clerkship in July.

DiPompeo earned his law degree from UPenn in 2009, having served nearly half of his law school career as editor-in-chief of the Law Review.

Abbey Salvo, the [official or unofficial?] writer/editor for USDemocrazy, has recently posted a biased propaganda piece about abortion on the home page of MyUMBC. In the interest of making sure that the UMBC community is well-informed and not misled by people pushing their own political agendas, this article will correct her misleading and false statements and point out her bias.

In addition, because we here at Students for Truth value honesty, accuracy, and transparency more than anything else in journalism, I am making my own -personal- biases clear, so that I will not commit the same error as Ms. Salvo by pretending to be the only rightly guided source of reliable information available. My wish is that you investigate the truth and analyze my arguments based on their merit, and not disregard them because you have different biases.

This writer's worldview includes a predilection toward
* knowledge is better than ignorance
* life is better than death
* human life begins at fertilization, the first moment of diploidy of the genetic human organism.
* People deserve the right to make their own choices, and this includes unborn peoples.

Let's begin.

Ms. Salvo states, "Members of the decidedly pro-life Republican Party are mobilizing. Their goal is to restrict or deny a woman’s right to choose."

Is this a stated goal? No. But is it an unstated goal? How would you determine this? Ms. Salvo is free to answer this question at her choosing. But for the sake of argument, let's investigate: logically speaking, if someone is not saying "I want to restrict/deny a woman's right to choose," then for that to be their true goal, there would have to be something implicit in their words or actions that would indicate this to be true. But is it?

A quick search revealed the 1996 Republican National Platform on Abortion:

"The unborn child has a fundamental individual right to life which cannot be infringed. We support a human life amendment to the Constitution and we endorse legislation to make clear that the Fourteenth Amendment's protections apply to unborn children. Our purpose is to have legislative and judicial protection of that right against those who perform abortions. We oppose using public revenues for abortion and will not fund organizations which advocate it......to ensure that women with problem pregnancies have the kind of support, material and otherwise, they need for themselves and for their babies.....We oppose abortion, but our pro-life agenda does not include punitive action against women who have an abortion..."

So the official Republican Party position on abortion does not include punishing women for aborting--this presupposes that they are not seeking to deny them the privilege to get an abortion.

The burden of proof lies on Ms. Salvo and her associates to demonstrate that Republicans truly are attempting to deny women the free choice to have an abortion. Since their agenda does not declare it, the evidence must be in the form of attempts to sign laws restricting access to abortion facilities, or restricting women's freedom to be educated on the benefits and risks of abortions. We will happily wait for USDemocrazy to assemble this evidence in a rebuttal post to this one.

Ms. Salvo next says, "To be clear, Planned Parenthood does not use federal funds to pay for abortions."

This needs no link. Anyone with an adequate grasp of elementary logical reasoning should be able to identify the flaw in Ms. Salvo's reasoning. If PP receives $400M from the Feds, and their operating budget is $600M, and they spend $300M of their funds on abortion, then clearly the Federal grants make this possible, because if they were not provided, PP would have to take money from abortion in order to funnel it into the more useful programs that they provide, such as limited forms of health care and contraceptives. (Or more likely, they would take money from health care and funnel it into abortions) The fact that the government gives them money allows them more freedom to spend money on various things, such as abortion. If the federal money was not given, they would have to cut some programs--presumably some of their abortion funds would have to be reallocated. It is undeniable that the federal funds help PP pay for abortions, whether the literal dollars given to them are used, or some other dollars with different serial numbers.

Next, Ms. Salvo says, " Also this week, a judge in Texas blocked parts of a law that would require women to go through a sonogram before an abortion, a tactic used to make them rethink their decision."

The judge is not pro-life. The law is.

If it is a 'tactic' that would give the women an opportunity to reconsider whether they should have an abortion, what is so insidious about that? Does Ms. Salvo mean to tell us that women should NOT be given any opportunity to rethink the enormous decision to have an abortion? Is it not important to make sure that one actually does want to make this decision, rather than haphazardly do something that they could potentially regret?

For example, does Ms. Salvo perhaps know of all the potential complications that can happen during and after abortion, and does she think that women should be informed of this before deciding to put themselves at risk for these complications?

There is also statistical evidence that shows that a significant portion of women who have the opportunity to hear their baby's heartbeat absolutely refuse to go through with the abortion afterward. When this author identifies that information's source, it will be posted in an addendum to this article due to its relevance.

He will continue his research on Mycenaean land use through an intensive geo-physical survey in Boeotia, Greece. His project, known as “Archaeological Reconnaissance of Uninvestigated Remains of Agriculture,” consists of extensive geophysical survey of the Mycenaean polder (dry land claimed from marshes) immediately around the stronghold, accompanied by collection of small finds from the ground surface in selected areas.
