Most recently, Eric Zeemering, a new assistant professor of public policy, spoke about the role of Baltimore’s city council president on WYPR. He noted, “a lot of power can come to an individual through their ability to persuade and lead other people towards decisions. And the council president can exercise that persuasive power both on the City Council as a whole and on the Board of Estimates.” Donald Norris …

100,000 Stories: Which One Is Yours?

UMBC's Women's Center is a forum for community-building, learning, empowerment and the pursuit of social justice. In this guest post, Jess Myers, Acting Director of the Women's Center, shares the Center's rich story and invites you to be part of it.

Happy 20th Birthday Women’s Center!
100,000 Stories: Which One Is Yours?

I remember exactly how I felt the first time I walked into the Women’s Center here at UMBC. I was still in the process of job searching since the move back to Baltimore from Colorado and a not-so-great economy had only landed me a part time job. I had set up an information interview with the current director, Mollie, to find out more about her professional journey and how she got to be director of a Women’s Center—a dream job of mine. As soon as I came into the Center and sat in the lounge, a peace came over me. My worries hushed and for the first time in several months, I felt my heart smiling. This place had amazing energy, love, and strength. This was a place I wanted to work. Lucky for me, I got my wish and I’m now in my dream job, directing the Women’s Center in its 20th year. As I think back over the 20 years the Women’s Center has been open serving over 100,000 individuals, I can only imagine other similar stories in which the Women’s Center has played a pivotal role. I believe it is those 100,000 stories that whispered in my ear, telling me I would be okay on my first visit to the Center and I believe it is those stories that still give me peace and strength every time I walk into this place.

Over the past 20 years, 100,000 individuals have walked through the Women’s Center’s doors co-creating our community—hence the anniversary year’s theme of 100,000 Stories: Which One is Yours? Just as I have shared my own story, I’ve been encouraging faculty, staff, and students to reflect and share their own stories of the Center throughout the year-long celebration. I also feel it is important to share the Women’s Center’s story with the UMBC community. During my short time at UMBC, I have been impressed by the rich history of the Women’s Center. From the diligent work of our founding members to the dedication of others to keep our doors open during the many transitions of the Center to the everyday activism and awareness of those blossoming within our space, our history is deep and inspiring. Much like the title of this blog, the Women’s Center truly was Co-Created by so many important and valuable people who did not want to settle for a campus without a Women’s Center. I realize not everyone on campus has had the opportunity to hear it so I’m thankful to be able to share some of it with you today.

UMBC is a diverse community with diverse needs. Since its founding in 1966, faculty, staff and students have felt the need to have a safe space on campus where resources, information, and materials could be accessed on issues relating to gender, equity, and justice. In creating that space, the Founding Committee for the Women’s Center had to ask themselves important questions about establishing a Center in the first place. For instance: What services will be provided? Where will it be located? Who will run it? Where will funding be obtained? The Founding Committee went about answering these questions by gathering information about pre-existing Women’s Centers and their functions. With this information, the Founding Committee was able to write a proposal and hold formal meetings with administrators to request space and funding support for a Women’s Center with a mission to assist women in achieving their full potential in education, work, and personal lives through personal empowerment, academic and intellectual growth, and professional development. The Women’s Center became a reality in September 1991 and was opened its doors on the second floor of GYM I (which was located in the same space the Commons currently stands).

During its early years, the Women’s Center stayed open through the help of a part-time director and the Women’s Union, a feminist student organization, helped to enlist student volunteers who collectively contributed a total of 50 hours per week. In addition to hosting meetings and groups focusing on women’s issues, the Center also provided meeting space for a variety of campus organizations. The Center worked to plan events, workshops and seminars; offered referrals; provided lending library; and programs targeted at single parents, non-traditional students, and women of color. It became an advocate on campus for issues of concern to all people.

Over the next several years, the Women’s Center showed its grace, agility, and flexibility with many changes. The leadership of the Center transitioned several times with many faculty and staff stepping in and up to support the Women’s Center. Additionally, the Center moved several times before finally landing in its current home space, The Commons, in 2004. The Center is now complete with comfortable couches, a kitchenette, a meditation/lactation room, a lending library, an ever-present supply of dental dams, fe/male condoms, tampons, pads and alternative menstrual products, several communities like the book club, returning women group, & mother’s group, and resources and referrals ranging from sexual assault and relationship violence, reproductive health, menopause, sexual orientation, gender awareness, scholarships, and counseling services.

Since its beginning, with only one volunteer staff member, the Women’s Center has expanded into a much larger space with a larger staff. Programming has changed and grown to meet the needs of the community and the Women’s Center staff commitments and responsibilities have also changed to complement the trends in higher education and society. Last year the Center hosted over 250 programs, assisted survivors of interpersonal violence, supported individuals in the LGBT community, helped build a community for returning women, and supported working moms and dads. Indeed, there is no doubt that the Women’s Center commitment to providing space, programming and opportunities for the development of women (and all individuals) has remained true over the past 20 years.

Recently, one of our recent graduates, Kat Patterson, came back to the Women’s Center to help us film for our digital story telling piece. I had the honor in introducing her to Simmona Simmons, one of the founding members of the Women’s Center. As I told Kat about Simmona’s role in the Women’s Center, Kat put her hands over her heart and said, “Thank you. Without the Women’s Center, my experience here would not have been as rich.” It was a beautiful moment that I am grateful to experienced. And, as I stand here at this pivotal moment, I look back over the 20 years, but perhaps even more importantly, look forward to the next 20 years. I am hopeful for the new stories of gratitude and thanks, for the new ways we will expand and grow, and for the new ways students will see the Women’s Center as their friend and ally. The Women’s Center is an ever evolving co-creation of those who come through our doors. Please use our anniversary year to be a part of the story!

The 20th Anniversary year officially begins on Wednesday, September 14th at noon with our kick-off picnic. Hope to see you there! For more information stop by the Women’s Center or check out our group page on my.umbc.

A letter from CSEE Department chair, Dr. Gary Carter

The Computer Science and Electrical Engineering department made significant accomplishments during the 2010-2011 school year. Our undergraduate enrollment grew to 886 students and our graduate enrollment grew to 271 students. Our department produced a total of 16 Ph.D’s during that time period. Our research productivity in terms of research expenditures has reached the level of our departmental budget at nearly $6 Million. In addition, Professor Hillol Kargupta was elevated to the level of IEEE fellow, and Professor Marie desJardins was promoted to full Professor.

Last year also marked a number of changes within the department. I became the Chair in October of last year after Professor Anupam Joshi ably served the department as interim chair, following Professor Charles Nicholas stepping down from the position.

We have also gained three new Computer Engineering faculty members: Assistant Professors Tinoosh Mohsenin, Chintan Patel, and Gymama Slaughter. Most recently, Shawn Lupoli joined the department as a lecturer in Computer Science.

Last year was also a time of transition. We had a number of faculty members retire: Sue Evans, senior lecturer in Computer Science, Professor John Pinkston, and Professor Zary Segall. We will miss their contributions to the department. In order to compensate for these losses, I am pleased to report that we have been authorized to search for a new Computer Science Assistant Professor.

Please look at our new website which contains a wealth of information for students, faculty, staff, visitors, and prospective students. You can visit it at www.csee.umbc.edu

STEM Fellowship Available

<Tagline>Applications Due Friday 9/16</Tagline>

In partnership with UMBC Physics Professor Dr. Lynn Sparling, WeatherBug, the Albright Foundation, and two local schools, Federal Hill Preparatory School (Baltimore City) and Our Lady of Perpetual Help (Howard County), the Shriver Center was awarded a one-year grant through Constellation Energy's "Energy to Educate" program. This is the second semester of this project, which runs January-December 2011. The POWER project seeks to teach 6th-8th grade students the basics about wind energy and other sustainable energy resources. Each grade level across schools will focus on a research question and will make presentations on their findings by the end of the semester. WeatherBug has installed weather monitoring stations at both of the schools to assist the students in their research. Selected UMBC students (Fellows) will deliver the science curriculum and help the students perform activities related to their research question.

At this time, we are recruiting for 2 Fellowships this fall, starting late September-December 2011. Availability is Wednesdays (12:30-3:15 pm) and Fridays (12:30-3:45 pm) at OLPH (15 minutes from UMBC). The shifts factor in adequate travel time to the school from UMBC. Ideally, applicants would be available on BOTH days. Each Fellow will receive $500 per semester. Students will be enrolled in the 096 Service-Learning Practicum, and may also have the chance to receive credit for their involvement. UMBC students with majors in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (particularly in Physics and Environmental Science) and/or STEM Education are encouraged to apply.

Interested students should fill out the attached, one-page application and submit it to POWER Fellows Supervisor Stephanie Pully at spully1@umbc.edu or in-person to The Shriver Center by Friday, September 16th, NO LATER THAN 5 pm. The Shriver Center is located on the 1st Floor of the Public Policy Building, just past the elevators. Interviews will be scheduled immediately the week after, starting Monday, September 19th and selections made by Friday, September 23rd. We plan for Fellows to begin at OLPH starting Wednesday, September 28th.

Researcher of the Week: Jessica Ruth Baker

<Tagline>Undergraduate researchers explore their interests!</Tagline>

How did you learn about the URA program at UMBC?
I first learned about the URA program at UMBC during my sophomore year. I was serving as Secretary for the Theatre Council of Majors when Janet McGlynn came to a meeting to introduce us to the world of the URA and URCAD, hoping to inspire some of us to participate. The next year, I plan to put together a project to present at URCAD. When I saw the caliber of research occurring with the URA funding, I decided to apply for a URA myself.

Did you know other theatre students who had applied for this?
I've only heard of one or two theatre scholars in the past, who may not have even done the URA and just done URCAD, I'm not sure. I know Shaun Vain successfully applied for a URA last year to present at this past URCAD in April, and his work was seriously awesome.

What kind of research do theatre students do?
From what I've seen, the most common way a URA scholar uses his or her money is to take part in a workshop series or join some classes, usually in a city well-known for its theatre training. They then bring back the knowledge gained and create original work influenced by this training. They often also offer a workshop for peers and the community to learn from them. This is usually pretty helpful to all students involved, as there are a lot of different kinds of theatre trainings out there, and it is difficult to sample them all.

How did you decide on the project you proposed? How did you find a mentor?
Originally, I had wanted to do a solo production as a capstone project for myself, because I wanted to find some meaningful way to finish off my five years at UMBC. Then my adviser, Lynn Watson, with whom I have worked on many projects extensively, suggested that I use the URA as an opportunity to expand the production and make it even better. Professor Watson agreed to be my mentor in this project because she has a lot of experience with actors putting on solo shows, and also she was the one who suggested I make it a URA in the first place. I rely on her for an immense amount of guidance, and will continue to do so as this project continues.

Was the application difficult? Did your faculty mentor help you?
I did not find the application too difficult - the hardest part was truly pinpointing exactly what I wanted to do! Professor Watson did assist me throughout the application process, proofreading it several times before I submitted it. She also counseled me on how much I would need to budget for each part of my project.

Would you suggest that other theatre students pursue funded research through URA?
I would absolutely suggest that other theatre students pursue research using a URA. The support system is phenomenal, and I always think it's incredible when artists can get funding to do the things they love, and to get even better at it. I also believe that, although both Jessie Poole and I are URA scholars this year, the theatre department is still woefully underrepresented, and I would love to see more of us take advantage of this awesome program.

What are your plans for after UMBC?
After UMBC, I will continue pursuing work as a professional actor, as well as break into the costume and scenic design field of professional theatre. One day, I hope to go to graduate school and achieve my doctorate, but for now, I just want to do what I'm good at, and what I love, as much as I can.

Read more about Jessica's research, "Designing and Performing a Solo Show" at the link below.
