Day One: The God of the Found

Psalm 103:1-18

1 Praise the LORD, my soul;

all my inmost being, praise his holy name.

2 Praise the LORD, my soul,

and forget not all his benefits—

3 who forgives all your sins

and heals all your diseases,

4 who redeems your life from the pit

and crowns you with love and compassion,

5 who satisfies your desires with good things

so that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s.

6 The LORD works righteousness

and justice for all the oppressed.

7 He made known his ways to Moses,

his deeds to the people of Israel:

8 The LORD is compassionate and gracious,

slow to anger, abounding in love.

9 He will not always accuse,

nor will he harbor his anger forever;

10 he does not treat us as our sins deserve

or repay us according to our iniquities.

11 For as high as the heavens are above the earth,

so great is his love for those who fear him;

12 as far as the east is from the west,

so far has he removed our transgressions from us.

13 As a father has compassion on his children,

so the LORD has compassion on those who fear him;

14 for he knows how we are formed,

he remembers that we are dust.

15 The life of mortals is like grass,

they flourish like a flower of the field;

16 the wind blows over it and it is gone,

and its place remembers it no more.

17 But from everlasting to everlasting

the LORD’s love is with those who fear him,

and his righteousness with their children’s children—

18 with those who keep his covenant

and remember to obey his precepts.

Reflection:

This is the life of “being and living found in God.” In the images revealed in this passage, starting with the initial praises given to God from David, we see that the love and compassion of our Father as infinite and unchanging. Everything in the world, including us, is temporary, but He is the same right from the start and to all of eternity. The care from our Creator is as gentle, as it is powerful. This psalm paints a vivid picture of what it is like fully living as the children of our sovereign God.

Response:

This Psalm declares what living the Christian life is all about. Let’s read through this Psalm with passion and conviction, asking that our hearts would be willing to receive all that it declares. Let’s thank our Father in heaven for who He is and as we live out the calling we have been given, may every word of praise uttered from our mouths be reflected and resonate in our thoughts and our actions today.

The Legacy: 10 years after 9/11

The events of September 11, 2001 changed the course of history and had profound implications people all over the world.

While we in the United States spend this day honoring the victims that were lost in the attacks and their families, we also find the world reaction interesting.

There were 2,977 victims of the attacks and many others dealing with the effects of PTSD.

While we honor the victims and their families, it is also important to consider the casualties from the past 10 years of war. As @morafi notes, there have been 686,915 casualties in the War on Terror – something that equates to the victim count of two 9/11 attacks every month since September 11, 2001. This reality isn’t often considered, but is important. Especially for those of us in school right now, these are wars our generation will inherit and be responsible for.

We would like to honor all of the victims of the September 11 attacks and all subsequent victims of the War on Terror that have paid the cost for extremist factions in their country and the policies of governments for which they are not directly responsible.

Let us know your take and reflect on your experience on that day 10 years ago. Do you remember where you were?

Detecting fake Google+ profiles with image search

Tweet

Many Google+ users have been reporting frequent notices about new followers that they don’t know and appear to be attractive young women. The suspicious followers have minimal profiles and no posts. These are obviously false accounts being created for some yet unknown purpose, but how can one prove it?

I just got a notice, for example, that Janet Smith of Philadelphia is following me. Now Janet Smith is a common name and Philadelphia is a big place — there are probably hundreds of people who live in the Philadelphia area with that name. The 990 other people she’s following seem like a pretty random bunch, though I do know many and have more than a few in my own circles. Most seem to have a fair number of followers.

So there is not much to go on other than her profile image. This is a great use for Google’s new image search. I dragged the picture into the image search query field and Google identified its best guess for the image as Indian actress Koyel Mullick. Sure enough, if you search for images with her name, the precise Janet Smith image is result number 15.

Of course, there are still some subtle issues. This is just one kind of false profile — one created for one identity but using an image from a different one. It’s common on most social media systems, including G+, for some people to use a picture of someone or something other than themselves. But it’s obvious to a human viewer that using a picture of a rabbit, Marilyn Monroe or the mighty Thor on your profile is not meant to deceive. It will be challenging to automate the process of discriminating the intent to deceive from modesty, homage or an ironic gesture.

New Fossils May Redraw Human Ancestry

<Tagline>Australopithecus sediba may offer insight into our evolution</Tagline>

The perpetual refinement of our knowledge of the human past continues. As is often the case, a new, more archaic find pushes our understanding of the fossil record while leaving many questions unanswered. This newly found australopithecine may lead to a better understanding of the emergence of the genus Homo. However, as is usually the case in paleoanthropology, vying interpretations abound, and this find reflects the politics of human taxonomy, as well.

Read about how a part of this skeleton was found by accidnet when a nine-year-old boy was playing with his dog in South Africa.

For those of you in ANTH 302 this semester, Tattersall is quoted in this particular article.
