I have rough drafts of the forms I need to turn in and will most probably going to bring that to our first meeting. One thing I will need before I can turn in the forms is "An Advisor Letter: This is a signed statement by a faculty/staff member on university letterhead agreeing to serve as an advisor that includes the individual's e-mail address and telephone number." If anyone knows any faculty or staff that would have interest in being our advisor, please let me know or just ask them to write it and I'll pick it up. (don't forget to give them my email or send me a notice so I know!)

           Another major point: What day or days of the week should we set for our meetings? (Any Friday jokes, all shall die lol) I'll put up a poll and the one with the most votes AND works out for all the members will get picked. Once we have that down we can pick the time. Remember that we have members who live in dorms as well as commuters! I'm thinking of having meetings starting the second or third week of school in case we have any freshman (also heard that UMBC doesn't like organizations having meetings within the first week of school).

Mentor Training on Thursday 9/8 7:30-9 pm

This fall, the Center for Women in Technology is piloting a mentoring program for new women entering the College of Engineering and Information Technology through its Affiliates Program. Forty-two returning students have volunteered to welcome new freshman and transfer students and assist with the transition into life as an engineering or IT major. New students can request a mentor through 9/10 and are encouraged to attend the Affiliates retreat on 9/10.

Four Peer Mentor Coordinators, Amy Chou (CENG; CWIT Scholar), Samurdhi Kalegana Koralage (MENG, CWIT Affiliate), Kelly LaFlamme (CSEE, CWIT Affiliate) and Aasam Tasaddaq (CWIT Scholar, MENG), will continue to work with the mentors as the semster begins. All mentors are required to attend training on Thursday evening, Sept. 8th, from 7:30-9pm in ITE 456.

Local elected officials, CEOs, tenants of the park and other cyber industry movers and shakers will be on hand to network and enjoy the evening’s signature drink, the “cybertini.” The mystery beverage created for this event will be unveiled in a dramatic way during “Cyber Happy Hour,” 5 to 7 p.m. at 5520 Research Park Drive. bwtech@UMBC has quickly become a hub for the cyber community in Maryland, with over 20 cybersecurity companies already located there. Over the past several months, national companies have chosen to locate business units at bwtech, including AccelerEyes from Atlanta, Georgia; Appistry from St. Louis, Missouri; and ASET Partners from Alexandria, Virginia. “Companies benefit from our close proximity to BWI airport and the fact we are in the ‘backyard’ of their government and federal agency clients,” says Ellen Hemmerly, Executive Director of the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC)UMBC Research Park Corporation. “We are thrilled that the expansion of cybersecurity activity at bwtech is boosting the local economy while providing solutions to real cyber and IT needs.” SSG, for example, is collaborating with UMBC’s Division of Information Technology on a new compliance monitoring software package. SSG is a recent addition to bwtech’s Cyber Incubator, as is SITEC Consulting, which was named the 2011 TEDCO Incubator Company of the Year. Alongside the companies at bwtech, several initiatives are in place to accelerate growth of the cyber industry. The Northrop Grumman Cync Program, created through a partnership between UMBC and Northrop Grumman, supports early stage companies that are developing new tools to protect the computer hardware, software and networks vital to national security. Cyber Map is building an online map showing Maryland's cyber resources and facilitating networking between companies. The company also has established the Cyber Hive, which allows companies from across the country to establish a presence in Maryland and access the region's cyber resources and opportunities. All of bwtech’s activities draw upon UMBC’s strengths in IT and cybersecurity. UMBC ranks fourth among U.S. research universities in the production of IT degrees and certificates, and it is the largest producer of such graduates among research universities in Maryland, Washington, D.C., and Virginia. The campus offers a master’s degree and a graduate certificate in cybersecurity, and it is rated a Center of Excellence in information assurance education and research. Thousands of UMBC graduates work in the intelligence community for key federal agencies and private partners. Research and collaboration with faculty provides companies with the opportunity to develop and improve upon products and tools. NEW STUDENTS
**Move in as normal (as of right now), and stay indoors.
**You may come earlier if you're going to have problems coming at the official time.
**DO NOT MOVE IN AFTER 4 PM due to the Hurricane passing through. COME BEFORE!!
**Check website to see when campus will reopen check-ins after the Hurricane passes.

RETURNING STUDENTS
**Move in is as scheduled. Move in will continue on Tuesday.
**Apartment residents are receiving a letter delivered to their rooms.
**You may NOT move in before your assigned move in date/time.

"If residents are asked to Shelter in Place possibly beginning late Saturday Night into Sunday, food will be provided in lounges and indoor activities will happen in lieu of Welcome Week.  Flex dollars for all students will be activated on Friday. Meal plans will be activated on your assigned move-in date."

To minimize chaos in the event of a disaster occurring:
*Stay away from windows and keep the blinds closed.
*Place refrigerators on cooler settings in anticipation of a power outage.
IF POWER GOES OUT
* Remain calm.
* Texting with cell phones takes less bandwidth and so will prevent the lines getting clogged with traffic. Only use them if you have an emergency.
* Do not use candles.
* In residence halls, visit the lounges for activities.
* or sleep. :)

You may be asked to Shelter In Place--in such a case, food will be delivered from the Dining Hall. Do not leave the buildings.
