Software Development Times reports that Computer Science is the top major for job offers.
]]>“Computer science graduates now get more offers of employment than any other major. This is the first time since 2008 that computer science has topped the list: previously, accounting majors had the highest offer rate. In 2011, 56.2% of computer science majors received job offers, compared to only 53.8% of accounting majors. The offer rate for computer science majors increased 13.8% this year from the previous year.”

1 Some time later, the cupbearer and the baker of the king of Egypt offended their master, the king of Egypt. 2 Pharaoh was angry with his two officials, the chief cupbearer and the chief baker, 3 and put them in custody in the house of the captain of the guard, in the same prison where Joseph was confined. 4 The captain of the guard assigned them to Joseph, and he attended them.
After they had been in custody for some time, 5 each of the two men—the cupbearer and the baker of the king of Egypt, who were being held in prison—had a dream the same night, and each dream had a meaning of its own.
6 When Joseph came to them the next morning, he saw that they were dejected. 7 So he asked Pharaoh’s officials who were in custody with him in his master’s house, “Why do you look so sad today?”
8 “We both had dreams,” they answered, “but there is no one to interpret them.”
Then Joseph said to them, “Do not interpretations belong to God? Tell me your dreams.”
9 So the chief cupbearer told Joseph his dream. He said to him, “In my dream I saw a vine in front of me, 10 and on the vine were three branches. As soon as it budded, it blossomed, and its clusters ripened into grapes. 11 Pharaoh’s cup was in my hand, and I took the grapes, squeezed them into Pharaoh’s cup and put the cup in his hand.”
12 “This is what it means,” Joseph said to him. “The three branches are three days. 13 Within three days Pharaoh will lift up your head and restore you to your position, and you will put Pharaoh’s cup in his hand, just as you used to do when you were his cupbearer. 14 But when all goes well with you, remember me and show me kindness; mention me to Pharaoh and get me out of this prison. 15 I was forcibly carried off from the land of the Hebrews, and even here I have done nothing to deserve being put in a dungeon.”
16 When the chief baker saw that Joseph had given a favorable interpretation, he said to Joseph, “I too had a dream: On my head were three baskets of bread.[a] 17 In the top basket were all kinds of baked goods for Pharaoh, but the birds were eating them out of the basket on my head.”
18 “This is what it means,” Joseph said. “The three baskets are three days. 19 Within three days Pharaoh will lift off your head and impale your body on a pole. And the birds will eat away your flesh.”
20 Now the third day was Pharaoh’s birthday, and he gave a feast for all his officials. He lifted up the heads of the chief cupbearer and the chief baker in the presence of his officials: 21 He restored the chief cupbearer to his position, so that he once again put the cup into Pharaoh’s hand— 22 but he impaled the chief baker, just as Joseph had said to them in his interpretation.
23 The chief cupbearer, however, did not remember Joseph; he forgot him.
Reflection:
Joseph’s interpreting of the dreams for the cupbearer and the baker is a stepping-stone for a greater purpose down the line. Although the cupbearer forgets about him for two years (perhaps it isn’t time yet), this connection eventually serves the plan that God has for Joseph. Our encouragement is to see how God could use any of our relationships to further His plan in ways that we cannot anticipate.
Response:
Just as Joseph serves the cupbearer and baker, we are meant to serve others with our gifts, not expecting in return but blessing others because we have been blessed by the Lord. Let’s spend some time in prayer, thanking God for the privilege of participating in His kingdom work and asking for even more opportunities to glorify Him by serving others.
]]>The Mid-Atlantic Student Colloquium on Speech, Language and Learning is a one day, free event bringing together faculty, researchers and students from universities in the Mid-Atlantic area working in Speech/Language/ML. The colloquium is an opportunity for students to present preliminary or completed work and to network with other students, faculty and researchers working in related fields. The event will be held in Baltimore MD at the Johns Hopkins University on Friday 23 September 2011.
Students are encouraged to submit one-page abstracts by Monday, August 15 describing ongoing, planned, or completed research projects, including previously published results and negative results. Student research in any field applying computational methods to any aspect of human language, including speech and learning, from all areas of computer science, linguistics, engineering, neuroscience, information science, and related fields, is welcome. Submissions and presentations must be made by students or postdocs. See the call for papers for more information.
Accepted submissions will be presented as posters and each will also be given a one-minute presentation during a poster spotlight session. A small number of submissions will be selected to be presented as talks, on the basis of diversity and general interest.
Student-led breakout sessions of one hour will also be held to discuss papers on topics of interest and stimulate interaction and discussion. Topics and suggested papers for breakout sessions should be submitted by students alongside abstracts.
The event is sponsored by the Human Language Technology Center of Excellence and the Center for Language and Speech Processing at the Johns Hopkins University.

Life’s Mosaic Center for Culture and Diversity is currently seeking 5
student interns
for the 2011-2012 academic school year! These new intern positions are a
reflection of the next evolution in the Mosaic Center's work with and
for UMBC students. These positions are called "Diversity Educator
Interns" and will replace the Cultural Peer student staff.
What is the Diversity Educator Intern (DEI) Program?
The Diversity Educator Intern Program is a year-long leadership development program that trains UMBC students about multiculturalism, diversity, social justice and intercultural communication, and prepares them to be diversity educators and facilitators. Through the DEI Program, interns provide high quality diversity education dialogue and interactive learning opportunities for UMBC students. DEIs play an essential role in creating an inclusive and accepting campus community. The DEIs are supervised and coached by a staff member in the Office of Student Life (the Assistant Dir. of Student Life, Cultural and Spiritual Diversity).
What Do The DEIs Do?
DEIs design and facilitate interactive, diversity education workshops for campus groups, facilitate UMBC Talks diversity dialogues and other intercultural and/or cross-cultural discussions, and advise student leaders. Workshops may be requested by organizations, classes, and offices. Sometimes the goal is just to help the group to understand and learn with one another better. Other times, groups are experiencing intra/intercultural communication problems and want DEIs to help them figure out ways they can overcome those difficulties. The DEI role is not to solve problems, but to help groups solve their own problems and to help develop diversity and multicultural awareness, knowledge and skills through engaging, safe and interactive activities.
