Day Two: Love Builds Up

1 Corinthians 8:1-6 (NIV 2010)
1 Now about food sacrificed to idols: We know that “We all possess knowledge.” But knowledge puffs up while love builds up. 2 Those who think they know something do not yet know as they ought to know. 3 But whoever loves God is known by God.

4 So then, about eating food sacrificed to idols: We know that “An idol is nothing at all in the world” and that “There is no God but one.” 5 For even if there are so-called gods, whether in heaven or on earth (as indeed there are many “gods” and many “lords”), 6 yet for us there is but one God, the Father, from whom all things came and for whom we live; and there is but one Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom all things came and through whom we live.

Reflection:
Now there is a saying that strikes to the heart, “knowledge puffs up while love builds up.” The danger of ‘knowing much’ is that we can become dependent on what we know to get things done. Paul is not promoting a not knowing way of relating (i.e., just guessing at life); but rather, he is urging us to know love, this Christ-centered way of living together. We can know a lot about each other, but do we really know one another? This type of knowing is only gained through love, through the cross, which is foolishness to the world.

Responding to the Transmission:
This begs the question: the person who is close to you - do you really know him/her? As God’s people, let us pray that we will choose to know one another by choosing to love. This act of love will build up one another. It is about knowing from the heart, and thus shaping our knowledge about who we are and how we live together for God’s glory.

UMBC Receives More Regional Awards

<Tagline>Freshman resident and ResLife/UHS event recognized</Tagline>

The National Residence Hall Honorary recognizes individuals and groups
every month through the Of The Month program. Most of this recognition takes place on the campus level, but campus winners are recommended for higher honors to a regional committee. UMBC has received a record number of accolades from this committee this year, and two more awards are added to the ever-growing list this month.

Billy D'Eugenio is a first-year student at UMBC, but has involved himself in many areas of UMBC's community. As a Theater major, Billy has involved himself in UMBC Theater productions, working as Lighting Designer and Master Electrician for GRRL Parts, as well as the Lighting Designer for UMBC Theater Club's RENT. As Billy's nomination states, while it is not uncommon for Theater majors to be so involved in productions, it is quite exceptional for a first-year student to be given so much responsibility in one month. On top of this, Billy is a member of UMBC's Pep Band. In recognition of his outstanding contributions to UMBC, Billy was selected as the Regional First Year Student of the Month for March.

March means Spring Break at UMBC, and for many that means taking time to relax and get away from classwork. Each year, the Peer Health Educators (part of the University Health Education office) hold a program to encourage safe practices during Spring Break. Historically, these programs have been poorly attended, but this year the Peer Health Educators worked with the Residential Life Office to expand the event. Third Year Resident Assistants Lauren Hartsky and Brett Reynolds, along with Resident Student Association Director of Events Preethy Prasad, worked with the Peer Health Educators to hold A Getting Lucky Luau, a "safe spring break" event with a Caribbean and St. Patrick's Day mix. With new activities and increased advertising, the Luau turned out to be the most successful program of its type held at UMBC in the last five years. This dramatic improvement earned the Luau recognition as the Regional Educational Program of the Month for March.

For more information about Of The Month awards, including a full list of winners from March, please visit the website for UMBC's Chapter of the National Residence Hall Honorary by clicking on the "Visit Website" button below.
PhD Dissertation Defense Announcement

A Semantic Analysis of XML Schema Matching
for B2B Systems Integration

Jaewook Kim

11:00am Thursday, 21 April 2011, ITE 346

One of the most critical steps to integrating heterogeneous e-Business applications using different XML schemas is schema matching, which is known to be costly and error-prone. Many automatic schema matching approaches have been proposed, but the challenge is still daunting because of the complexity of schemas and immaturity of technologies in semantic representation, measuring, and reasoning. The dissertation focuses on three challenging problems in the schema matching. First, the existing approaches have often failed to sufficiently investigate and utilize semantic information imbedded in the hierarchical structure of the XML schemas. Secondly, due to synonyms and polysemies found in natural languages, the meaning of a data node in the schema cannot be determined solely by the words in its label. Thirdly, it is difficult to correctly identify the best set of matching pairs for all data nodes between two schemas. To overcome these problems, we propose new innovative approaches for XML schema matching, particularly applicable to XML schema integration and data transformation between heterogeneous e-Business systems. Our research supports two different tasks: integration task between two different component schemas; and transformation task between two business documents which confirm to different document schemas.
