Wisconsin Senate passes union limits without the Democrats
Wisconsin Senate Union moves without Democrats
On March 09, 2011, witha vote of 18-1 Republicans, Wisconsin senate approved a bill Gov. Scott Walker's proposed restrictions on collective bargaining for
public employees today, getting around a Democratic walkout by
stripping financial provisions from the bill.
On February 21, 2011, Gov. Scott Walker, was asked in an interview with Chris Wallace of Fox News,
"If it's a money issue and balancing the budget and they are willing to
concede on the money issues, why isn't that enough? Why do you also have
to take back some of their collective bargaining rights?"
responded with "they" [Democratic State Senators ] are using the collective bargaining issue as a "red herring". He further stated,
"I want to give those local governments the tools they need to balance
the budget now and in the future. They can't do that with the current
collective bargaining laws in the state."
According to CNN, "His bill, which already had passed the state Assembly, would bar public
workers other than police and firefighters from bargaining for anything
other than wages." Also, raises would be capped to the rate of inflation, unless state voters
approve. The legislation also would require unions to hold a new
certification vote every year, and unions would no longer be allowed to
collect dues from workers' paychecks.

Name: Robert Metzger
Q: How long have you been at UMBC?
A: I started in the Fall of 2007.
Q: What is your current title (job or student organization position)?
A: I'm a Student Marshal, as well as Secretary for Alpha Phi Omega, Treasurer of the Humans vs. Zombies Club, and brother of Triangle Fraternity.
Q: In 12 words or less, what role(s) do you play on campus?
A: I help make the campus safe and fun for students.
Q: What aspect of your UMBC role(s) do you enjoy most?
A: I like the involvement, and seeing my actions directly helping other students find their place at UMBC.
Q: What is the most important or memorable thing you learned in college/have learned at UMBC?
A: Empowerment. I've learned that my actions may not do much, but if they give somebody the drive to grow and succeed, then I feel I've done my job.

Q: Do you have any UMBC stories, little-known facts about UMBC, favorite spots on campus, or anything else you’d like to share?
A: For the past couple of years I've volunteered to help out with URCAD, the Undergraduate Research and Creative Achievement Day. It's a really cool event held on the third floor of the University Center and it showcases research projects that fellow students have been doing over the past year. Volunteering has allowed me to help students present their research to other students, faculty, and staff, and so far every project I've seen has been rather interesting. If you do get the chance, try to drop by URCAD and see what research is being done at UMBC.

Leslie Valiant receives ACM Turing Award
The Association for Computing Machinery named Harvard's Leslie Valiant the winner of the 2010 ACM A.M. Turing Award for "his fundamental contributions to the development of computational learning theory and to the broader theory of computer science."
"Valiant brought together machine learning and computational complexity, leading to advances in artificial intelligence as well as computing practices such as natural language processing, handwriting recognition, and computer vision. He also launched several subfields of theoretical computer science, and developed models for parallel computing."
The Turing Award is considered to be the computing's “Nobel Prize" and carries a $250,000 prize.

Full Title: Startup City to stimulate urban entrepreneurship in Baltimore
Baltimore entrepreneur and computer programmer Mike Subelsky wants to help strengthen the IT startup community in Baltimore and has created Startup City to give it jolt. The effort will fund up to ten groups that will receive free space, seed money and mentoring to develop their ideas during the summer of 2011.
The planning document describes what the program will offer the ten groups:
- $15,000 in seed capital
- Weekly master classes with experienced entrepreneurs
- Regular access to mentors
- Introductions to potential customers and follow-on investors
- Free, beautiful office space collocated with the other participating companies
- Legal, accounting, marketing, and technical assistance from Baltimore’s Emerging Technology Center
- Vigorous coverage of their stories in our blog via video and written profiles
- Exposure to investors, journalists, and business leaders at a Demo Day occurring at the end of the 12 weeks
