UMBC, SAIC, the National Cyber Security Alliance, the Tech Council of Maryland, and the Maryland Department of Business and Economic Development have joined to hold the Maryland Cyber Challenge and Conference on October 21-22, 2001. The event is designed to increase cyber awareness as a career choice in Maryland, improve the appreciation for cyber oriented curriculum in college and high schools, and convey cyber defense as a sport to increase interest in careers involving cyber security.
The competition will be divided into high school, collegiate and professional divisions. Qualifying rounds take place over the Internet between April and August 2011 using SAIC's Cyber Network Exercise System (CyberNEXS), a scalable training, exercise and certification system. The top eight teams in each division will meet at the MDC3 event in October for the final round followed by an award ceremony at UMBC. MDC3 participants will also be able to learn from and network with other cybersecurity professionals, researchers, and scholars at the conference, which will include presentations, a career fair and a vendor exhibition.

Brad is an adjunct professor of Enterprise Sustainability at the Institute for Sustainable Practice at Lipscomb University and a member of the Climate Project.
In this time of heated political discourse and animosity it’s always comforting to find an agreement that we can hang out hats on. Just was the case a few days ago when both Punxsutawney Phil and Staten Island Chuck emerged to declare, even as the heartland and northeast braced for another winter blow, that spring was on its way. Agreement was even found on the international stage as Canadians Shubenacadie Sam and Wiarton Willie both concurred with their American counterparts. Rejoice, rejoice! Nature has spoken spring is around the corner!
For many, Groundhog Day also brings to mind images of a 1993 comedy by the same name. The film starred Bill Murray as a dejected, self-centered, and down-right rude meteorologist forced to relieve, day-after-day, February 2nd in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania. The cycle was only broken when Murray’s character allowed himself to see what the small town and its residents had to offer.
So what does this have to do with sustainability in higher education and on college campuses? Many professionals trying to implement sustainability in a university setting feel that they are in a groundhog cycle; reliving the same experiences and not making progress in their fight to create a more sustainable campus community. For all their good intentions and work, progress just doesn’t seem to happen.
Does any of the below sound familiar?
You’ve scheduled a meeting to discuss the state of sustainability on your campus and all anyone wants to do is talk about what the definition of sustainability is?
You’ve delivered presentations to student groups who look like they would rather be in an organic chemistry or finance class.
You’ve received commitments and confirmation of financial resources only to find that the resources have been reallocated.
When these and other roadblocks repeatedly happen they become much more than hiccups, they become serious obstacles is seeing a sustainability vision to fruition. I can assure you that these issues are not only specific to the campus setting but occur throughout government and industry as well. The good news is, like Murray’s character, campuses are finding ways to break this cycle.
Over the next month we will be breaking down the Groundhog Cycle that many campuses find themselves in by using insights uncovered from our sustainability experience in government, industry and higher education. We will cover a variety of topics including:

Research and Technology Companies Join the Research Park

dshapiro@umbc.edubwtech@UMBC is pleased to announce that three organizations – Clear Resolution Consulting, Research Triangle Institute and the U.S. Forest Service’s Baltimore Field Station – have signed leases for space in the Research Park. All three are looking forward to reaping the benefits of their new location.
Clear Resolution Consulting, which advises companies on cybersecurity strategy, business process re-engineering and computer network operations, will occupy 2,600 square feet of space on the 2nd floor of the 5523 building and will be a part of bwtech@UMBC’s Advantage cybersecurity incubator, Cync. CEO Ayinde Stewart noted that the National Security Agency is one of his company’s customers and that he is looking forward to working with Cync sponsor Northrop Grumman to serve the technology needs of the defense community. Stewart notes that bwtech@UMBC’s location, including its federal HUBZone status, was a big selling point when choosing a location for his company. Having been familiar with UMBC and its president, Freeman Hrabowski, for many years, Stewart is pleased to have the opportunity to hire interns from UMBC’s nationally recognized computer science and IT programs.
Research Triangle Institute will move into about 2,000 square feet of space in the 5520 building. Currently a resident of bwtech@UMBC’s Life Sciences and Technology Incubator, scientific program director Diana Fishbein is excited to be moving into a larger office which will allow employees to interact more closely with UMBC faculty. The nonprofit international organization, whose headquarters are in Raleigh, NC, conducts research and provides services on topics ranging from physical and mental diseases, environmental science, health care, economic development, policy and aerospace. The Baltimore branch at UMBC specializes in behavioral and neuroscience research, focusing on understanding, treating and preventing behaviors such as drug and alcohol abuse, tobacco addiction and a variety of other high risk behaviors. The office now employs 12 people, including several interns and one full-time hire from UMBC. “Our work involves translating science to a practical setting and there are a lot of resources toward that end at UMBC. We’re developing some really promising collaborations,” said Fishbein. One such collaboration is with both UMBC and the University of Maryland, Baltimore. The two campuses are building a neuroimaging lab and the institutions are partnering with the company on a grant application for a research project proposed by RTI.
The Baltimore Field Station of the U.S. Forest Service moved into a 3,200 square-foot space on the 3rd floor of the 5523 building in mid-December. Previously located at UMBC’s Technology Research Center, the 8-employee office needed more room to grow and to host visiting scientists, according to Morgan Grove, the station director. Grove noted that the station and UMBC have a long history of collaboration, starting 13 years ago when they partnered under a National Science Foundation grant to study the sociological and ecological changes in Baltimore over a period of several hundred years. The station, which studies soil, vegetation and air quality to understand changes in sustainability in the Baltimore region and their relationship to the Chesapeake Bay, has worked with a number of faculty and students over the years and Grove is looking forward to expanding those collaborations.
“We are delighted to welcome these organizations to the Research Park,” said Ellen Hemmerly, executive director of the bwtech@UMBC Research and Technology Park. “They each have the potential to make a large impact on UMBC and the region as a whole, and we look forward to their success.”

On April 12, 1861, Confederate troops fired on Fort Sumter, beginning a conflict that had reverberations still felt in American culture. Now, as we prepare to mark the 150th anniversary of that historic event, experts at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) are available to answer questions about the Civil War and how it is remembered in today’s world.
Anne Rubin, associate professor of history, is the author of A Shattered Nation: The Rise and Fall of the Confederacy, 1861-1868, and, with Edward Ayers, the CD-ROM The Valley of the Shadow: Two Communities in The American Civil War Part I: The Eve of War, which won, among others, the E-Lincoln prize. She has authored articles and chapters in numerous Civil War books, magazines, and encyclopedias.
Rubin is now developing Sherman’s March and America, an interactive project that tells the story of the march through maps, photos, videos and voices, and writing a related book called Through the Heart of Dixie: Sherman's March and America, which will be published by UNC Press. Rubin can discuss the historical facts of the Civil War, including Maryland’s unique place in the struggle.
Kriste Lindenmeyer, chair of the department of history, frequently works with K-12 educators in Maryland through UMBC’s Center for History Education to increase teachers’ content knowledge and develop instructional materials. She is currently working with a team of 8th grade teachers through the “History Labs” grant program to develop a historical investigation on the Civil War that will be piloted with students this spring. Lindenmeyer can discuss what K-12 students learn about the Civil War as part of their history education. Specific teachers that have worked with the Center for History Education to prepare material on the Civil War include Sue Apple ’95 M.A., historical studies, an 8th grade teacher at Glenwood Middle School in Glenwood, MD, and Laura Attridge’01 M.A., historical studies, an 8th grade teacher at Wilde Lake Middle School in Columbia, MD.
Duncan Campbell, part-time professor of American studies, is the author of English Public Opinion and the American Civil War and an editor of The American Civil War. At UMBC he has taught undergraduate classes including “America as Seen from Abroad” and “The South in American Culture.” He can talk about the international community’s reaction to the Civil War.
Student Abigail Bratcher recently received an Undergraduate Research Award (URA) to research Southern reaction to Maryland’s position as a divided state within a divided nation through popular print culture of the time: broadsides, editorials, political cartoons and other manifestations. Bratcher ’13, history and Russian will present her work at UMBC's Undergraduate Research and Creative Achievement Day (URCAD) this spring. Bratcher hopes to write an article on her research for Maryland Historical Magazine.
While Elefteria (Terry) Papavasilis was a student at UMBC, she discovered a love of history that she pursued both in the classroom through her research and on the battlefield as a Civil War reenactor. Papavasilis ’04, history, used her URA to mine data at the Library of Congress and the National Archives about women fighting disguised as men during the Civil War. She presented her project, “Keystone Patriots: Women Soldiers in Pennsylvania Regiments,” at URCAD in 2004. Her report was published in the UMBC Review: Journal of Undergraduate Research in 2005. As part of her project, she created a composite character of a female Civil War soldier, and has reenacted in this character since 2003. She has worked as a park guide at Independence National Park in Pennsylvania since 2005.

Every year, schools from six states in the central Atlantic region gather together at the No Frills Business Conference to recognize the most outstanding amongst them. This year, UMBC was one of those outstanding schools.
The Central Atlantic Affiliate for College and University Residence Halls (or CAACURH) presents a number of awards every year to residence hall associations, National Residence Hall Honorary (NRHH) chapters, and individuals within those organizations for exceptional efforts to improve the quality of on-campus life. At the 2011 No Frills Conference at the Miami University of Ohio, UMBC's Chapter of NRHH submitted a bid for the Regional NRHH Building Block of the Year award. This award is presented to the one NRHH Chapter within Maryland, Delaware, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Ohio, the District of Columbia, and Qatar that has made the most improvements to its structure and involvement on campus and beyond. Despite being up against two competing bids, UMBC was announced as the winner of this award Saturday night.
UMBC's NRHH Chapter has made significant improvements over the course of the last semester, including:
Increased involvement at regional conferences through presentations
Increased service opportunities, including the Adopt-a-Family program conducted in November and December
Increased numbers of Of The Month nominations; increased quality of those nominations; and increased numbers of Regional and National award winners
Improvements to the Chapter Constitution and planned addition of bylaws
Increased membership (applications for this semester open March 6th!)
Improved relationship with the Resident Student Association
...and much more. With this victory at the Regional Level, UMBC now has the opportunity to bid for the national award, at the annual conference for the National Association of College & University Residence Halls, Inc., hosted this year at the Western Illinois University in late May.

Every year at its annual No Frills Business Conference, the Central Atlantic Affiliate of College and University Residence Halls elects its Regional Board of Directors for the next academic year. At this year's conference hosted at the Miami University of Ohio, UMBC NRHH President Lauren Hartsky successfully bid for the position of Associate Director for NRHH and Recognition.
The Central Atlantic Affiliate of College and University Residence Halls (or CAACURH) is one of eight regions within the National Association for College and University Residence Halls, Inc. (NACURH), the largest student-run organization in the world. The CAACURH region includes schools from Maryland, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, West Virginia, Ohio, the District of Columbia, and Qatar, and provides support for residence hall associations (such as UMBC's Resident Student Association) and chapters of the National Residence Hall Honorary by providing lines of communication between schools and recognizing individuals and organizations for the work they do.
Lauren is currently President of UMBC's NRHH Chapter. A Resident Assistant since Fall of 2008, Lauren was inducted into NRHH in Fall 2008 for her outstanding service in her first semester as an RA and to the Resident Student Association, where she served as the organizing chair for Midnight Breakfast and represented UMBC at the annual CAACURH Regional Conference at Stevenson University. Lauren was elected Secretary of the Chapter in Spring 2009, and has served on the Chapter's executive board ever since.
As Regional Associate Director for NRHH, Lauren will be responsible for coordinating resources, communication, and programs between the dozens of NRHH Chapters within the CAACURH region. This includes chairing the Regional OTM Committee, which reviews Of The Month award nominations submitted by member schools for recognition at the regional level. Lauren will also serve on NACURH's and NRHH's National Board of Directors, allowing her to influence the direction of the Honorary across the country and world.
The last time UMBC hosted a member of the Regional Board of Directors was in the 2007-2008 academic year, when Randy Lawrence served as Regional Communications Coordinator for Special Projects. This is the first time that UMBC has hosted a member of the National Board of Directors.
At the conference on Saturday, Lauren was also awarded a Cougar Pride Pin. This pin, named after the regional mascot, Campbell the Cougar, is awarded by current members of the Regional Board of Directors in recognition of outstanding service and dedication to the region. Lauren received her pin from the current holder of her new office, Vicki Forcina of the University of Toledo, in thanks for the dedication Lauren has shown to the CAACURH region and its NRHH chapters.
