Tuition decrease at a college in Tennessee. :)
UMBC will increase tuition next semester. :(
Read this article!A college in Tennessee is actually cutting tuition to its students to make itself look like a better choice for applicants that have a greater amount of options when it comes to college acceptances and choices.
Points:
1. Sewanee College has larger competitors for applicants. Similar to UMBC's competitors which include UMD and Salisbury, as well as USG.
2. UMBC's cost is rapidly approaching that of nearby competitors, namely its rival institution, which used to be around $3000 higher.
3. Students who must pay for themselves will have to choose then between a growing university, or one that already has a name.

The ‘UMBC Wellness in the Workplace Initiative’ is now the ‘UMBC Wellness Initiative’! Wellness is vital to the effectiveness and well being of every member of our campus community (faculty, staff, and students) and the name change reflects this value. Week 2 UMBC Update on RecyleMania - BIG GAINS
20.3% of the 106,747 pounds was recycled
In week 2 of Recyclmania, UMBC showed its "green" spirit and tripled the percentage of trash we recycled from 6% to over 20%.
For the second week of the competition UMBC recycled over 10 tons of material!
Please remember that UMBC is now a single-stream campus for recycling, you can put your recycling in any convenient recycling container without worrying about separating.

Mission 1 & Election Update
The objective for mission 1 of Game 3 was to find three “supply caches” scattered about campus. The humans only retrieved one out of the three needed and so the zombies won the mission with a twelve hour extension on their starve timers.
The next mission will be Thursday, February 17th at 7pm, starting from the Commons commuter lounge stairs.
The secretary elections were also held yesterday and we are pleased to announce that Megan Everett will be the newest officer joining the group!

Towson's Freedom Square
Last semester Towson University launched a new free speech space called Freedom Square. As is described in this post on the American Democracy Project blog, the space features chalkboards, electrical outlets, seats and a “public forum area.” Each week a question is posted on the chalkboards, and students can write their responses. The first question posted was, “Why is Free Speech important to you?” The site is also a venue for campus events relating to its mission of promoting free expression, critical thinking and debate.
I’ve thought for a while that UMBC would benefit from such a space, and I’ve been involved in several conversations in the past in which participants imagined where it could be located and what it might contain. The discussions on MyUMBC provide a valuable outlet for people’s opinions, but I’d love to see a dynamic physical representation of our campus commitment to civic engagement and the free exchange of ideas.
The one thing about the Towson’s approach I find slightly off-putting is the posting of those weekly questions. I love the idea of promoting debate, but there’s something about the fact that the questions aren’t attached to a person—they’re sort of disembodied, coming from nowhere—that leaves me a little cold. Their appearance hints at a hidden authority controlling things, setting the terms. I’d like to think we could com e up with a way to establish a free, non-virtual, creative forum for individual expression and community discussions without incorporating the disembodied voice.
