<Title>C U Later, C-SPAN</Title>

    <p>Believe it or not, there are some people who actually watch C-SPAN.</p>
    <p>A few of us at USDemocrazy are included, so there were mixed emotions when we heard they missed an opportunity to make their coverage just a little bit more exciting.</p>
    <p>Since the mid 1990s, the network has been trying to gain approval to use their own cameras in a new place on Capitol Hill. The House of Representatives does not allow C-SPAN to record its gatherings.  Last week, Rep. John Boehner became the latest Speaker of the House <a href="http://www.politicsdaily.com/2011/02/04/john-boehner-denies-c-span-request-for-increased-coverage-of-hou/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">to deny C-SPAN’s request</a>:</p>
    <blockquote>
    <p>I believe the American people — and the dignity and decorum of the United States House of Representatives — are best served by the current system of televised proceedings provided by the House Recording Studio</p>
    </blockquote>
    <p>The video broadcast currently shown by C-SPAN comes from cameras operated by Congress itself.  This setup only allows certain angles and avoids showing the reactions of Representatives when their colleagues are speaking.  In the past, members of Congress have disagreed over the use of the cameras.</p>
    <p>Every Speaker since Newt Gingrich has banned C-SPAN from using their own equipment in the chamber.  There was a clear sense of frustration in <a href="http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2011/02/04/AR2011020407317.html" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">the network’s statement</a> on the most recent rejection:</p>
    <blockquote>
    <p>We’re disappointed to learn that despite 32 years of experience with televising its sessions and in an age of ubiquitous cameras in political life, the House of Representatives has chosen not to allow C-SPAN’s cameras into its chamber to cover its sessions</p>
    </blockquote>
    <p>Where do you stand on cameras in Congress?</p>
    <p><strong>BONUS:</strong> Chad Pergram of Fox News writes <em><a href="http://politics.blogs.foxnews.com/2011/02/06/who-controls-cameras-congress" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">nose picking</a></em> is among the real reasons C-SPAN’s cameras aren’t allowed.</p>

    BALTIMORE (Feb. 7, 2011) — Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC) [NYSE: SAI] and the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) today announced plans for a statewide cyber competition and conference designed to attract more students and young professionals to pursue careers in cybersecurity. The Maryland Cyber Challenge and Conference (MDC3), to be held Oct. 21-22, 2011, will strengthen Maryland’s position as a cybersecurity leader by bringing teams of current and prospective cybersecurity professionals together to develop the skills and techniques needed to protect vital information systems.

    Founders of the event include SAIC, UMBC, the National Cyber Security Alliance (NCSA), the Maryland Department of Business and Economic Development (DBED), and the Tech Council of Maryland (TCM).

    “I am so proud to join in celebrating the first-ever Maryland Cyber Challenge and Conference,” said Maryland Governor Martin O’Malley. “Our State is poised to lead the way in cybersecurity. From our world-class facilities, federal agencies and military commands that are engaged in cybersecurity work to our vibrant and growing private sector and talented universities, we are uniquely positioned to lead the way to protect and defend the nation’s digital infrastructure. I’d like to thank SAIC and UMBC for recognizing the importance of preparing the next generation for the jobs of the future.”

    Orientation sessions for teams in each of three divisions — high school, collegiate and industry and government professionals — will be held at UMBC in March and April. Two qualifying rounds will be conducted online using SAIC’s Cyber Network Exercise System (CyberNEXS), a scalable training, exercise and certification system.

    “SAIC is thrilled to be a co-founder of the inaugural MDC3,” said Larry Cox, SAIC senior vice president and business unit general manager. “This is an opportunity to attract students and young professionals to cyber-oriented degree programs and careers, expanding Maryland’s reach as a leader in cybersecurity innovation.”

    The final rounds of the challenge will be held at the conference as part of Maryland’s activities to recognize National Cyber Security Awareness Month. High school teams will compete in a cyber defense challenge, while collegiate and professional teams will go head-to-head in a “capture the flag” scenario. Winners of each division will receive their trophies and awards at a formal ceremony at UMBC.

     “Maryland colleges and universities have a critical role to play in preparing students for careers in cybersecurity and related fields,” said UMBC President Freeman Hrabowski. "This event will support those efforts by encouraging the development of valuable cybersecurity skills in a competitive setting.”

    The October cyber conference will feature exhibitor booths, keynote speeches and workshops conducted by nationally recognized industry leaders.

    “NCSA is proud to be a co-founder of this event,” said Michael Kaiser, NCSA executive director. “The nation is in need of a new generation of cybersecurity professionals. This challenge is an excellent way to inspire young people to pursue careers, and perhaps ignite a new passion for, protecting our valuable digital assets.”

    During MDC3, students and young professionals will have an opportunity to network with cybersecurity leaders while learning about careers in cyber technology. The conference agenda will be oriented toward students, parents, and professionals from academia, industry and government.

    “DBED is pleased to team with SAIC and UMBC to prepare today’s students for tomorrow’s jobs,” said Maryland Secretary of Business &amp; Economic Development Christian S. Johansson, adding, “We launched CyberMaryland last year to position our state as the epicenter for cybersecurity and this effort demonstrates that everything cyber happens right here in Maryland.”

     “For more than a year, the Tech Council of Maryland (TCM) has been engaged with the cybersecurity industry, our members and our partners in Maryland to produce a series of events and conversations through the CyberMaryland Forum,” said Renée M. Winsky, TCM CEO. “Working with SAIC and others on MDC3 only furthers the breadth and opportunity for Maryland’s bourgeoning cybersecurity industry.”

    </span></div></div>
    <div><div><strong><span>Q: What title would you give your Super Human Moment?</span></strong></div></div>
    <div><div><span><br>
    </span></div></div>
    <div><div><span>A: Broken from the Start – The Relationship or Me?</span></div></div>
    <div><div><span><br>
    </span></div></div>
    <div><div><strong><span>Q: What happened?</span></strong></div></div>
    <div><div><span><br>
    </span></div></div>
    <div>
    <div><span>A: I started dating *John* my senior year of college.  John and I had a very close friendship, enjoyed so many of the same interests/hobbies, and he taught me how to play guitar.  I was the “good girl” all my life, and he was a “bad boy” of sorts who kept me intrigued and eventually got me hooked.  I am not a fighter, but oh, how we fought.  Typical unhealthy relationship, where one is hopelessly in love with the other who hurts you, but you keep pressing on because “next time, the promises won’t be broken”.  I thought, at the time, he had all the qualities I ever hoped for in a partner (along with some negative ones I would’ve never pre-selected, but not everyone’s perfect).  I compromised my standards, my relationship with my family, my own intuition, and that little voice inside trying to shout at me --  we got engaged. </span></div>
    <div><span><br>
    </span></div>
    <div><span>The conflict from all sides increased.  In the climactic height of a typical ‘misunderstanding’, John removed the ring from my finger in a fit of rage.  At that moment, he tore out my heart, but it had long ago been chipped to pieces.  He was sorry…again.  But his act in momentary loss of control was the defining act that pushed me to seize the ground he accidentally provided.  His last mistake was my out.  Could I have done it on my own?... The agony ensued for months, but John was gone from my life.  And that’s the shortest version of that chapter of my life I have ever shared.</span></div>
    <div><span><br>
    </span></div>
    <div><span>I had mixed responses to the end of my engagement, a time in my life that I had been dreaming and praying about for many years.  All I wanted was to find “the one”, get married, and raise a lovely family.  On one hand, I was miserable and suffering, grieving at the loss of those hopes and plans --- how could I ever find all I wanted in another person?  On the other hand, my logical and grounded side of me (along with the tremendous support of my family and friends) knew that this was a huge trial to grow from and I would move past it.  During the relationship, I could see what was unhealthy, but I set it aside.  As the troubled weeks passed after the engagement ended, I began to identify the emotional and mental abuse and the manipulation that I allowed myself to endure because of my codependency on my partner.  I had difficulty being independent, and I don’t mean being single.  I was so selfless with my heart, emotions, strength, and energy that I had none left for myself.  I was empty.  I had to learn to take care of and understand the inner me in order to healthily give of myself to others.  Strengthening and growing the inner me allows me to pursue what I’m passionate about – caring for and building up others.</span></div>
    </div>
    <div><div><span><br>
    </span></div></div>
    <div><div><strong><span>Q: How have you applied what you learned?</span></strong></div></div>
    <div><div><span><br>
    </span></div></div>
    <div><div><span>A: In the months following the culmination of our relationship, my family and friends, a professional counselor, and hours upon hours of self reflection, thoughtful contemplation, and prayer helped me understand this:  in order to help anybody else, I had to help myself get better first.  I am still growing each and every day in this area.  I have discovered what excites and fulfills taking care of the inner me!  With a stronger, independent self, I am getting better and better at serving others in healthy, developmental ways.  Also, more times than I can count on my two hands I have been able to share my difficult story to shed some light for others journeying through their own difficult stories.  I know I will be able to do that for the rest of my life, even for my own future children (fingers crossed).  It’s true – everything happens for a reason (whether you ever come to understand that reason or not).</span></div></div>
    <div><div><span><br>
    </span></div></div>
    <div><div><strong><span>Q: Do you have any advice you can pass along to others?</span></strong></div></div>
    <div><div><span><br>
    </span></div></div>
    <div><div><span>A: Relationship violence is not only so hard to watch when you see it in others; it is very hard to get out of when you are the one in the unhealthy romantic relationship.  Listen – to your gut and to those who care about you.  Know and understand who you are and what you stand for.  In turn, you will be better equipped to make healthy decisions for yourself and be better able to impact loved ones and strangers with all your strong, awesome self has to offer!</span></div></div>

    <h3>1:00-2:15pm Friday, 18 March 2011, ITE 227, UMBC</h3>
    <p>Standard semiconductor lasers operate in a limited wavelength range, below about 4 microns. Quantum cascade lasers (QCLs) that operate in the mid-IR and far-IR have important applications to medicine, environmental sensing, and national security. While short pulse lasers (~100 fs) are available for standard semiconductor lasers, that is not the case for QCLs. Standard passive modelocking is hard to do in QCLs because of their long coherence times and short gain recovery times. We propose a fundamentally different approach, based on the self-induced-transparency (SIT) effect, that turns these weaknesses into strengths. Solitons, modelocking, and SIT are all reviewed at the beginning of the talk.</p>
    <p>Curtis R. Menyuk was born March 26, 1954. He received the B.S. and M.S. degrees from MIT in 1976 and the Ph.D. from UCLA in 1981. He has worked as a research associate at the University of Maryland, College Park and at Science Applications International Corporation in McLean, VA. In 1986 he became an Associate Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering at the University of Maryland Baltimore County, and he was the founding member of this department. In 1993, he was promoted to Professor. He was on partial leave from UMBC from Fall, 1996 until Fall, 2002. From 1996 – 2001, he worked part-time for the Department of Defense, co-directing the Optical Networking program at the DoD Laboratory for Telecommunications Sciences in Adelphi, MD from 1999 – 2001. In 2001 – 2002, he was Chief Scientist at PhotonEx Corporation. For the last 20 years, his primary research area has been theoretical and computational studies of lasers, nonlinear optics, and fiber optic communications. He has authored or co-authored more than 220 archival journal publications as well as numerous other publications and presentations. He has also edited three books. The equations and algorithms that he and his research group at UMBC have developed to model optical fiber systems are used extensively in the telecommunications and photonics industry. He is a member of the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics. He is a fellow of the American Physical Society, the Optical Society of America, and the IEEE. He is a former UMBC Presidential Research Professor.</p>
