On Wednesday, October 6th at 12 pm in the Library Gallery, Lynn Cazabon, associate professor of Visual Arts at UMBC, will present her series of photographs, Discard, an ongoing body of work consisting of several discrete series of images featuring movie films discarded by public institutions (libraries, schools, archives). Harking back to the 19th century practice of postmortem photography, each print serves as a memento mori to the recently obsolete medium of film. In its totality, Discard is a shadow archive, reflecting that which has been omitted from institutional archives. More generally, the series reflects on the ongoing cycle of obsolescence, wherein technologies replace one another at ever increasing speed. With each iteration of this cycle, a particular way of seeing/knowing the world is lost. Admission is free. This event is presented as part of UMBC Archives Month. In collaboration with High Zero Festival, UMBC presents a workshop by bass clarinetist Hans Koch on Friday, September 24th at 1 pm in Fine Arts Building Studio 508. Koch quit his career as a recognized classical clarinetist to become one of the most innovative improvising reed players in Europe. He has worked with Cecil Taylor, Fred Frith and other noted artists since the eighties. As a composer he has shaped the sound of Koch-Schütz-Studer ensemble and has written for radio plays and film. Since the nineties he has worked with electronics as an extension of saxes and clarinets, as well as with sampling/sequencing/laptop techniques. As a reed player he is always working to define his own vocabulary and sound, making him a unique voice on the stage. Admission is free.
