Google Apps for UMBC is Here

We are excited to announce that beginning August 30th, faculty, staff and students can opt-in to the new Google@UMBC environment.

Google Apps is a package of online applications that makes communicating and collaborating at UMBC easier and more efficient. The cornerstone of Google Apps is Gmail, Google’s web-based email program, which integrates with Google Docs, for creating and sharing documents, and Google Calendar, for coordinating schedules. All of these services are hosted online, so email, documents, and calendars are always accessible from any computer, anywhere.

The Google contract was signed by the attorney general’s office in July 2010 under the Maryland Education Enterprise Consortium (MEEC) umbrella. UMBC was the first USM school to sign the new contract thus allowing UMBC to offer the Google collaborative tools to the UMBC community.

A Google@UMBC Web Site has been setup to answer many of your questions.

    Timeline
August 6th All new student accounts will automatically be created on Google@UMBC. This includes incoming Fall 2010 Freshmen.
August 30th Faculty, Staff and Students can opt-in, via NEW Web Interface, to migrate their mail to Google
January 2011 Migrate remaining student accounts to Google

UMBC experts offer perspective on Gulf oil spill cleanup

Though BP has halted the flow of oil from its Deepwater Horizons well into the Gulf of Mexico, questions about the spill’s long-term effects could take decades to fully answer. Experts at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC), offer fresh perspectives as the national conversation turns to this disaster’s political, regulatory and ecological impacts.

Tim Brennan, a professor in the Department of Public Policy, can talk about the regulatory impacts of the oil spill, drawing both on his research interests, and his experiences working as an economist for the Antitrust Division of the U.S. Department of Justice and the White House Council of Economic Advisers. He is currently assessing proposals for tighter regulations or new liability rules to determine who would pay the long-term costs and whether the outcomes would be desirable.

Scott Farrow, chair of the Department of Economics, can give a historical perspective on offshore oil drilling. A former member of the Dept. of the Interior Scientific Advisory Committee for Offshore Leasing, Farrow is the author of the 1990 book “Managing the Outer Continental Shelf Lands,” which presents the issues, institutions and people associated with the energy and mineral resources of the outer continental shelf of the United States.

Tom Schaller, associate professor in the Department of Political Science, is an expert on the American presidency and national politics. He is available to comment on ways that the spill and its aftermath potentially impact upcoming elections.

Kevin Sowers, a professor in the Department of Marine Biotechnology, is an expert on marine microbes and their role in bioremediation of ocean and coastal pollutants. He can talk about naturally occurring and artificially enhanced microbial process that remediate oils and other contaminants.

Yonathan Zohar, chair of the Department of Marine Biotechnology, has done groundbreaking research on fish reproductive physiology, endocrinology and marine hatchery technologies. He and his colleagues have developed a sustainable aquaculture system that allows marine fish species to be raised indoors without pollution. He can talk about the need for alternative sources of seafood given concerns about water quality and seafood safety that have heightened in the wake of the Gulf oil spill.

Baltimore Restaurant Week

…is just around the corner!! Though Fogo de Chao is not on the list this
time, I am still SUPER excited! =)

For a list of restaurants (and the neighborhood they’re in) check this out:
http://www.baltimorerestaurantweek.com/

Baltimore Restaurant Week is from August 13th to August 22nd. It’s a great
treat for us college students who start school the week after! For $20.10,
you get to have a great 3-course lunch or for $35.50 a great 3-course
dinner. Trust me, these restaurants are DIVINE!!

A few of my personal favorites and suggestions include:
1) Mezze (adjacent to Kali’s Court- they are run under the same
management): If you’ve never had tapas (aka- small plates), you have to
check this place out! Great variety and there’s always something to please
everyone’s palate. Bring lots of friends because this is a meal that is
meant to be shared! The dinner option is only available for restaurant
week but they are offering this deal on weekends as well!

2) The Black Olive: Some GREAT fresh seafood and Mediterranean eats! A
lunch option is also available so be sure to check them out! I went there
last year with the boyfriend, and it was fabulous =).

3) RA Sushi Bar: Now I’ve never had their restaurant week special, but
their Happy Hour (from 3-7 PM Monday through Friday) is fanTASTIC!! Half
price select appetizers (practically all of them), nigiri and maki sushi,
and drinks!!!

4) From what I’ve heard/read, Roy’s Hawaiian Fusion is actually a great
chain restaurant. For you chocoholics, their chocolate souffle is heaven!!
=)

5) Ruth Chris Steakhouse: Again, another chain, but seriously, it’s some
good steak!! You really can’t beat this price at any other time of the
year, so be sure to check them out for you meat lovers!

Please let me know of any great restaurants that you find around
Baltimore!! Let me know which restaurants you tried out this week!

Dorms usually look very bland and unexciting. You want to make your new home away from home look inviting and comfortable as possible. Cheap and easy-to-make crafts will brighten things up without spending much green. Here are a few ideas:

Paint a glass bottle and use it as a vase, or add a dew drops of paint into a clear bottle mixed with water to add a splash of color by your window space, or wherever you want.

Post up memorable photos on your wall! It will cost less to tape these pictures on your wall than buying a large poster. You can even use other things like paystubs.

Use pictures from magazines of your favorite sports team or celebrity and tape them on your wall.

Use a bedsheet as a curtain to get rid of those bland window shades.

For others check out this site!

Changes to myUMBC for August 11, 2010

<Tagline>If you like it then you shoulda put a bow on it!</Tagline>

Today's phrase was "put a bow on it", meaning, lets wrap this myUMBC thing up and call it done. And we did. From this point forward, no more new features, just fleshing out some missing content and putting some extra polish on things.

That said, we managed to sneak something kinda cool in today:

"Magical" Search Box - It's not as magical as an iPad, yet, but give us a week or two to get it warmed up. Basically, we've given the search box in the top right of myUMBC the ability to recommend links, groups, and other content to you. It's smart in that it won't recommend faculty links to students and vice-versa, but its also dumb in that it will only recommend things that we tell it to recommend. We're going to be watching what people search for and use that data to help flesh out the recommendations. Keep in mind, this isn't a full-fledged search. That's a job best left to Google. However, if we can make it so that when you type "pay bill", we give you the direct link to pay your bill, then why not?

Get Ready for the Big Day: August 14th

Keep the comments and feedback coming!

Thanks,

Collier
