The other day at while I was placing my order at Mondo subs, I asked the lady making my sandwich for extra hummus on my Vegetarian sandwich. Two girls behind me commented loudly at how gross hummus was. I turned to ask then what exactly they did not like about it. The taste? Smell? Chickpeas?
Their answer?
The texture….
Now personally I love hummus, actually I love chickpeas. They have been a HUGE staple in my healthy living college style diet.
Chickpeas are an excellent source of fiber and are best paired with raw vegetables. Perfect for dipping!
So if you are like the girls that stood behind me the other day, here is a chickpeas recipe that will play with your taste buds

- 2 (15 oz) cans of Chick Peas (Garbanzo Beans)
- 2 tbsp of Fresh Coriander/Cilantro Leaves
- 1 Green Chilli
- 2 tbsp. of Chaat Masala ( can purchase this at local Indian store)
- 3 tbsp of Imli Chutney (can purchase this at local Indian store)
- ¼ of a medium sized Onion (diced)
- 1 medium Tomato

UMBC’s faculty experts on Asian cultures are extending the university’s reach across the Pacific.
Two books written by UMBC Faculty are currently being translated to Asian languages. Tour of Duty: Samurai, Military Service in Edo, and the Culture of Early Modern Japan, is by Constantine Vaporis, professor of history, and examines the cultural aspects of Samurais’ tours of duty while in the employ of Japanese war lords. That book is currently being translated to Japanese, and will be released in Japan in May.
Anna Shields, director of the honors college, also has a book in translation. Crafting a Collection: The Cultural Contexts and Poetic Practice of the Huajian ji, examines the social and literary origins of Chinese love song lyrics from the 10th Century and is being translated to Chinese. The book was released in English in 2006, and will be released in China in 2011.
Neither author wrote their book thinking that it would be translated, and they agreed that the process is more complicated than simply handing their work over to the translator. “I have to track down the original source notes and interpret them for the translators,” said Vaporis. The English version of his book was released in 2008 and chosen as a Choice Outstanding Academic Title for 2009 by the Association of College and Research Libraries.
Shields pointed out that cultural as well as linguistic differences between her scholarship and Chinese norms complicate the process. “I take an approach that isn’t necessarily identical to the one that Chinese scholars would use, so I need to be sure that the particular perspective I use on a problem is correctly translated,” she said.
Maintaining the perspectives in these two books is crucial, because both authors look at their subject in a unique way. “There are lots of studies in Japan that look at [the tour] as a control mechanism, but none that look at it from a cultural perspective,” Vaporis said. Shields tackled an art form and period that has not been widely studied.
Both authors expect that the translated version of their book will be popular, because the subjects are familiar and interesting to the people where they will be released. “Think about how many books are published here on Shakespeare in a given year,” Shields explained.
In addition to reaching a Chinese audience through her scholarship, Shields will head to China this month to talk with high school students about attending UMBC. UMBC is also the home of Asian scholars; Warren Cohen, professor emeritus of history, recently released the fifth edition of his book America’s Response to China: A History of Sino-American Relations, and Ka-che Yip, professor of history, was named a 2010-2013 UMBC Presidential Research Professor for his work in modern Chinese history and public health.
“I think there are all kinds of opportunities for UMBC to begin building real connections in China,” Shields said.

With the cover of internet anonymity, you also should expect that there is a fair amount of deception going on. (I don't really think that was Batman, or even President Obama.) Experienced users explain that in the rush to gain and hold a strangers' attention in under five seconds, lies are commonplace. I don't want to sound cynical, but this means that the guy you were just talking to is probably not an Australian marine biologist, and in fact, he may not even be Australian.
If you imagine that Chatroulette must be the product of some technology think-tank, you'll be surprised to learn that it's the brainchild of Andrey Ternovskiy, a Moscow teenager who created the website as an amusement for him and his friends. For months the site's creative force was shrouded in mystery, but thanks to this article in the New York Times, that's no longer the case. That fact that a 17 year-old invented Chatroulette and runs it out of his bedroom should also give you some idea of the level of innovation involved.
I spoke to one of our student staffers who uses Chatroulette regularly, to gauge his impressions of the experience. He told me it was a bit addicting, and that after a time he became desensitized to rejection as strangers from around the globe reached across the screen to click "NEXT." He also said that the key, in his opinion, was to do or say something quickly to grab the other person's attention, even if this meant being rude or a bit shocking. Almost everything said, I was told, was a lie, but this was expected. On average he will have one or two real interactions per hour, for no more that 10-15 minutes each, although once he talked to a young lady (who claimed to be from Chile) for 90 minutes. He said that most of the people he saw seemed to be in college dorm rooms.
Will Chatroulette change the way we interact, and open up new dialogues? Probably not. The falseness eliminates any real communication, and the need to shock will drive away almost anyone wanting to make a real connection with another human being.
So what is Chatroulette then, in the big scheme of things? Not much. It's really just one more thing to amaze, horrify and amuse us for a few moments until we get bored with the shallowness of it all, and begin searching for something more meaningful, or at least something more amusing. Think of it as a digital hula-hoop, or Rubik's Cube - only with a forty-year old man pretending to be Batman looking at you while you play with it.
