Dr. Joseph Siu Contributes Chapter to Modeling Musical Analysis
Published by Oxford University Press
Dr. Joseph Chi-Sing Siu, Associate Teaching Professor in Music Theory at UMBC, is a contributing author to
Modeling Musical Analysis, edited by Kim Loeffert and John Peterson and recently published by Oxford University Press.
Dr. Siu’s chapter, “Metrical Dissonance and Phrase Grouping in HWANG Yau-Tai’s Oblivion [黃友棣 - 遺忘] ,” analyzes one of HWANG Yau-Tai’s (1911–2010) most beloved choral works. Composed in 1968 and set to a text by Taiwanese author CHUNG Mei-Yun (鍾梅音), the four-part choral piece portrays the protagonist’s emotional turmoil as she struggles to forget her lover, even as her lingering feelings persist. Dr. Siu’s analysis focuses on HWANG’s use of metrical dissonances and phrase groupings, demonstrating how these compositional techniques enhance the expressive depth of the music and reflect the protagonist’s conflicted emotions.
Modeling Musical Analysis provides a collection of accessible and diverse analytical essays designed for classroom use. The volume amplifies the voices of marginalized scholars and broadens the scope of music theory pedagogy by incorporating a wide range of musical traditions and genres. Essays in the collection explore music from regions such as China, India, Japan, North and South America, and Turkey, as well as genres like ballet, chamber music, film music, jazz, musical theater, opera, oratorio, orchestral music, popular music, video game music, and vocal music. These essays provide students with new perspectives and methodologies, helping to make music theory more inclusive by expanding the range of music and analytical techniques typically represented in theory curricula.
Congratulations to Dr. Siu on his contribution to this publication!

The UMBC Faculty Senate's Ad Hoc Committee on the Integration of AI has the two goals of:
- Formulating evidence-based policy recommendations to guide the ethical and responsible integration of AI technologies in teaching and learning environments.
- Proposing guidelines, procedures, and safeguards to ensure the appropriate use of AI tools while mitigating potential risks and safeguarding academic integrity, student privacy, and equity.
The fall 2024 faculty survey on AI use in the classroom highlighted the complexities of the topic and the high level of interest in exploring AI among the faculty. The purpose of this listening session is to give faculty the opportunity to address this topic in a collaborative and in-depth manner.
The listening session will be recorded to preserve data and no identifying information will be associated with collected data. The outcomes of the listening sessions will be reflected in our report shared with the faculty senate.
Join the meeting 12-1pm on Monday, February 17, 2015 via

Contingency Plan - UMBC Transit Inclement Weather Advisory - 02.08.25
Potential Delays or Service Disruptions - Saturday
Dear Retrievers and Valued Transit Riders,
Forecasters in our region are calling for snow showers on Saturday, February 8, 2025, beginning in the afternoon and continuing into the evening hours. We will continue monitoring conditions to ensure your safety while informing you about potential impacts to services.
UMBC Transit may experience delays, service suspensions, or closures depending on road conditions. Our team will assess conditions on an hourly basis. Please check here for the latest updates on inclement weather advisories and route changes.
Transit Tips for Safe Travel:
-
Dress warmly and prepare for slick surfaces due to potential snow or ice.
- Use the Transit App for real-time location of your bus, and allow extra time to walk to your bus stop, and use caution when boarding UMBC buses.
- Avoid running to catch the bus, especially during inclement weather.
We appreciate your patience and cooperation as we prioritize the safety of our community. If you need further assistance, please get in touch with us at 410-455-2454 or transit@umbc.edu.
Safe travels,
