On an annual basis, farmers in northern India and Pakistan "burn off excess straw after the rice harvest," and these fires lead to smoke plumes that, in turn, lead to poor air quality conditions.

Second, he contributed research discoveries and related information graphics to a Health Policy Watch article titled "Delhi Air Pollution: Is Government’s Satellite Monitoring Missing Stubble Fires?" Dr. Jethva and other researchers question the "downward trend" of fires burning in Punjab and Haryana; rather, the fires do continue to occur, but due to the the timing of the satellite observations in the late morning and early afternoon, the trend is inaccurate, since fires are happening in late afternoon or overnight, according to the researchers. Accountability and enforcement of the policies implemented in India is also necessary.

The Make Your Mark Leadership Scholarship Fund was established in 2021, by the UMBC SGA in recognition of the undergraduate student leaders’ contributions to UMBC and their respective communities. Whether you are an athlete or a student agent of change, we all make our mark in our respective communities in one way or another. The Make Your Mark Leadership Scholarship is aimed to recognize the many types of leadership experiences our UMBC Undergraduates harbor. The purpose of the award is to recognize UMBC students with proven leadership achievements (minimum 2.25 grade point average), At least a semester before expected graduation and have made valuable contributions to their respective communities. While financial need will be a consideration, it WILL NOT be the deciding factor in granting the award(s). Applications should be submitted to Scholarship Retriever. Selection of a student or students for the award will be made by the selection committee, chaired by the UMBC SGA Executive President and the SGA Advisor. Application deadlines will be clarified on Scholarship Retriever.

CLIMATE PROTEST AND RESISTANCE ART NETWORK: CALL FOR ARTISTS

Political leadership is changing in the United States. But the climate emergency

remains, and the window for action is closing. Protest and social movements to

drive climate action – including through art – have never been more urgent.

The Crow's Nest art incubator in Baltimore is building a climate protest art

network, which we are calling the Mulberry Network after the street on which

our building sits. Mulberry Network artists are interested in collaborating with

climate activists engaged in non-violent direct action (marches, disruptions,

demonstrations) in the DC-Baltimore area by producing protest / resistance art

that can be used in direct action.

Mulberry Network artists should be willing to meet with activists, learn about

their direct action campaign priorities and objectives, and if commissioned, be

willing to produce artwork in a relatively short time to support the protest

actions. Art may include posters, banners, installations, animations, illustrations,

and projections. Artists are not expected (but are welcome) to participate in the

direct actions.

Artists who join the Mulberry Network will be put in contact with specific climate

activist organizations that have expressed openness to introducing art into their

activism. The Crow’s Nest will make those connections and provide pop-up

studio space and / or organizing space to support projects commissioned

through the Network.

Activists will be expected to provide honorariums to all Network artists. It is up

to the artist to decide if they will reduce fees or volunteer work for the cause.

Artists are encouraged to ask for the full value of their labor and form a contract

with individual activist organizations as to timelines, delivery, and expectations.
