<Tagline>Guest Lecture Next Week! Last Chance for Advising!</Tagline>

Today is Election Day! If you haven't voted yet, polls are open now until 8pm tonight. Maryland has same-day voter registration, so even if you aren't already registered, you may be able to cast a ballot today! Find your polling place on the state's Voting Location Lookup site here.

Last Chance for Advising!

Remember that you cannot register for your Spring 2025 classes until you get clearance from your advisor, and you can't get clearance from your advisor until you have an advising appointment with them.

Have you signed up for an advising appointment with Dr. Vaporis or Dr. Kim? They've emailed an advising sign-up sheet a few times. This week is the last opportunity to meet with them during special extended office hours. If you haven't received the sign-up sheet, or are unsure how to complete it, please contact us as soon as possible.

Registration for Spring 2025 is happening now, and we anticipate that many classes will fill up quickly. Don't miss your chance to sign up for the courses you need and want - get advised today!

New Spring 2025 Course Offering: ASIA 330/ART 355 - The Dao of Intermedia

Prof. Chan is offering her popular "Dao of Intermedia" class again this spring. The course, crosslisted as ASIA 330 and ART 355, explores the connection between art and the everyday through lectures, and readings of Asian philosophy. The course consists of discussions about the philosophy and how traditional and contemporary artists/craftspeople have related the philosophy to their work. Students learn traditional arts/crafts such as brush-painting, papermaking, paper/textile decorative arts as well as creating art that is both physical material and performative. Seats are extremely limited - sign up today!

Winter Session Registration Continues

Are you interested in taking a class during the Winter 2025 session this coming January, but aren't sure which one is the best option? Consider an asynchronous class that will count towards your Asian Studies requirements!

ASIA 300 - Modern East Asia
HIST 381 - From Samurai to Salariman: Japanese History Through Film and Literature

Unlike the Spring and Fall semesters, you do not need advising clearance to register for Winter Session classes. For more information about Winter Session, visit their website.

Don't Forget: Guest Lecture with Dr. Anita Mannur on Monday, Nov 11!

We hope to see many of you in the Library Gallery on Monday afternoon, Nov. 11, for Dr. Mannur's lecture "From Pandan Donuts to Masala Chai Ice Cream." Dr. Mannur will explore the ways that a new generation of chefs is bringing the cuisine of Asia to a global audience - and we'll have refreshments for the lecture attendees, as well!

Upcoming Dates and Deadlines

Ongoing: Winter 2025 Registration

Ongoing: Spring 2025 Advising & Registration

Technology Tested and Updated in Classrooms

<Tagline>AV Services Operations staff evaluate, update, and repair AV</Tagline>

Thank you to our full-time and student staff for getting AV systems ready for the fall semester!

Much of our campus community slows down a bit over the summer session while students are working, interning, or at home with family and friends. For the Audio-Visual (AV) teams, the summer is the busiest time of the year because classrooms are available for upgrades!

In preparation for the fall semester, the Operations and Design & Engineering teams completed several major projects, including comprehensive classroom evaluations, new system installations and programming, and upgrades to existing technology.

Comprehensive System Evaluation

The AV Operations team meticulously checked 203 technology-enabled classrooms throughout the summer session. Once rooms were checked, the team repaired or replaced any aging or broken equipment, completed firmware updates, and did a final operational check before the fall semester began. This involved assessing various components of each AV system across:

· 91 Registrar Scheduled Classrooms and Lecture Halls

· 36 Departmental Classrooms

· 76 Webex Conference Rooms

This proactive initiative aims to enhance the experience for students, faculty, and staff as they return to campus. Key systems that underwent scrutiny included the review of Fall 23 - Spring 24 Request Tracker (RT) tickets for potential issues, full operational tests of AV systems, testing of lecture capture and HyFlex systems, firmware updates, and the repair or replacement of non-functional items.

Additionally, remote AV system monitoring has been implemented in 142 locations, encompassing a total of 967 devices. This capability enables staff to identify offline systems swiftly and investigate proactively ahead of reported issues.

Wifi-based Assistive Listening in Lecture Halls

This summer also saw the introduction of Wifi-based Assistive Listening in all lecture halls, allowing users to receive room audio directly on their personal devices via the Listen Everywhere application. Radio-frequency (RF) receivers have been available for some time in large classrooms and lecture halls, but the new advantages do not require users to retrieve and return earbuds and receivers for every lecture hall they visit.

Design & Engineering

The AV Design & Engineering team works through the fall and spring semesters completing new system designs for Registrar classrooms, departmental classrooms and lab spaces, and conference rooms. The majority of these new systems are installed, configured, and programmed by full-time staff and the student installation team through the summer semester.

New Systems Installed in Summer 2024 include:

Full Classroom Technology Upgrades in 4 Registrar locations, including:

Lecture Hall 1, PUP206, PAHB132, PAHB234

hackUMBC 2024 Celebrates 10th Anniversary with Record Participation!

hackUMBC 2024 marked its 10th anniversary with an impressive turnout, welcoming 500 students from local high schools and universities for the fall hackathon. Hosted in person, participants engaged in a 24-hour challenge to create innovative hardware and software projects aimed at solving real-world problems.

This year's hackathon featured four specialized tracks: Best Hardware, Best AI/ML, Best Educational, and Best Health/Environmental. In addition to the main hackathon, a successful game jamathon was held in collaboration with the Game Dev Club, providing an exciting platform for participants to create innovative games throughout the weekend. Competitors presented their projects to a panel of judges, vying for prizes totaling $6,800. Major companies, including T. Rowe Price, Booz Allen, Nightwing, and Johns Hopkins APL, participated as sponsors and mentors, offering invaluable support to the participants.

hackUMBC 2024 set a new participation record, making it the largest event in the program’s history. The goal of the event was to create a beginner-friendly environment with workshops on coding, AI/ML, cybersecurity, and resume reviews to help participants grow. Throughout the weekend, students collaborated, many meeting for the first time, but sharing a passion for creating impactful solutions.

Among the standout projects, Diversify Stock Simulation won the T. Rowe Price-sponsored track for Best Use of FinTech. The team aimed to make financial literacy more accessible through an AI-driven stock prediction model, using public data from Yahoo and training a neural network capable of forecasting trends for S&P 500 companies.

The First Overall winner, Vector Mentor, developed a platform to help students organize study materials and track learning progress. By leveraging a custom machine learning model, Vector Mentor generated personalized study questions based on users' notes and provided analytics to guide their studies.

At the core of hackUMBC is a sense of community, welcoming students of all majors and backgrounds. The event prioritized creativity, encouraging participants to think outside the box and explore new ideas. It only takes one innovative solution to inspire change, and hackUMBC hopes to continue sparking waves of creativity in the years to come.
