Celebrating the Class of 2024 at Winter Commencement
Dear Faculty and Staff,
We hope that you will join us in celebrating the Class of 2024 by participating in UMBC’s Winter Commencement ceremonies. You have played important roles in supporting our students throughout their journeys at UMBC, and so we hope you will join us in celebrating graduates and their families at the ceremonies.

Allison is a senior majoring in Spanish, with a Latin American Studies minor, and Law and Justice minor.
Title of your research project: Mexican Feminist Movements and the Role of Social Media: Civic Participation and Transnational Solidarity
Describe your project: How social media can help spread knowledge and awareness of issues important to Mexican feminists and engage participants across borders.
Who is your mentor for your project?
My mentor is Thania Munoz Davaslioglu, Modern Languages, Linguistics, and Intercultural Communication. My mentor has been my advisor for my major, I have known her the entire time I’ve been at UMBC! I was very eager to work with her on her next project.
How did you become interested in this project?
This was a topic that was presented to me when I took an Individualized Study class with Dra. Munoz last spring. While researching hashtags on social media on March 8 (International Women’s Day), I noticed events being held in the United States that were inspired by events and movements in Mexico. These featured the same colors, symbols, and hashtags, and oftentimes were advertised in Spanish and held at Mexican embassies or consulates. We wanted to investigate further and expand on this idea!
What has been the hardest part about your research/what was the most unexpected thing about being a researcher?
This being my second research project, I was used to the general procedures of research. However, this time, I was using social media as my primary tool - which meant I had to sift through more posts than I ever thought possible! This turned out to be the most fun and rewarding part of it, however, as it was amazing to see the amount of people standing in solidarity with each other. It was also the “breakthrough” moment of our project!
What has been the most rewarding part?
Getting to work with my advisor on such an important project and topic. I have known her for years now and I hope she’s proud of me!
How will you disseminate your research?
I will be presenting my research at the National Women’s Studies Association Annual Conference in Detroit, Michigan on November 17, with a Travel Grant from the Undergraduate Research Office. I also really want to bring this project to URCAD this spring!
What is your advice to other students about getting involved in research?
Please do it! It’s so, so rewarding, and the skills you will learn are ones you will keep for life. Be brave!
What are your career goals?
I hope to be a paralegal, and expand on my legal knowledge. Although, doing research permanently does sound pretty appealing! I will never rule it out.

Improving Shared Embodiment between Humans and Robots with Haptics

Robots are becoming important to enable people in their work and daily life, such as in assistive and performance enhancing devices like prosthetics and exoskeletons, and in teleoperating remote agents to complete tasks in remote or dangerous locations. The communication between people and their robotic devices must be intuitive and responsive in order to be effective. My research interests can be summarized by user-centric design in instances of shared embodiment. These examples demonstrate shared embodiment through shared kinematics in exoskeletons, a joint body in prosthetics, and use as an avatar in teleoperation. My work focuses on utilizing the sense of touch for human-robot communication, acknowledging the important role of haptic information in navigating our environment.
In this talk, I will discuss my work in two areas. The first is in the design and integration of haptic devices in human-robot systems. This leads to the second, addressing a bottleneck in device saliency by combining methods from psychophysics and contact mechanics. Through my work I aim to create effective systems with intuitive control and haptic feedback in order to create more immersive and efficient interactions for the human utilizing robotic support.
Janelle Clark is an assistant professor in the UMBC Mechanical Engineering Department. She received her Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering at Rice University, Houston, TX, USA in 2022 in the Mechatronics and Haptic Interfaces (MAHI) Lab and postdoctoral fellowship in the Human-Robot Interaction Laboratory in the Minor School of Computer Science at the University of Massachusetts Lowell. Her research focuses on user-centric design and haptic interfaces for human-robot interactions in instances of shared embodiment, with application domains such as prosthetics, exoskeletons, teleoperation, and virtual reality. Her work combines principles from psychophysics, contact mechanics, robotics, hardware design, and controls to investigate physiological contributions to haptic perception and the creation of intuitive human-in-the-loop control systems.

RESOLVED - Blackboard Service Disruption - Course Content Access
Access to Blackboard course content may be impacted
Update @ 6:37 PM: After a rolling restart was performed, course menus appear to be consistently stable and content is available. Users also report the error messages are no longer appearing.
At approximately 10:00am on October 29th, UMBC users began reporting error messages upon attempting to access Blackboard courses. Instructional Technology staff opened a ticket with Blackboard Support and are continuing to monitor the service disruption.
As of 11:15am, this issue remains under investigation with Blackboard support.
Users may observe missing items from course menus including attendance, announcements, groups, and messages. Users who are able to log in courses may experience degraded performance and difficulty accessing course content and assessments. Most users are able to log into Blackboard itself and the issue is not system wide at this time.
Clearing the browser cache may offer temporary relief for the issue.
If you encounter an issue when accessing a Blackboard course, please open an RT ticket and provide the session debug code, if available. The unique error id can be shared with Blackboard support to help clarify the errors observed in your course(s). Screenshots are also helpful.
This post will be updated with additional information as we receive it.
